Elfrid Payton is one of the most underrated point guards in the entire NBA. For the past two seasons, he was a primary starter for the Knicks, providing solid production. Entering free agency this summer, Payton would get the chance to join a new team and provide value.

According to The Athletic’s Shams Charania, Payton has agreed to a one-year deal with the Phoenix Suns. He will immediately make an impact in the 2021-22 season for the team.

Coming off of an NBA Finals run, Payton will provide much-needed guard depth for the Suns.

Last season in New York, the 27-year-old averaged 10.1 points, 3.4 rebounds and 3.2 assists per contest. He started in all 63 games he played in, but will likely come off the bench in Phoenix.

The New York Knicks have agreed to a deal with Elfrid Payton, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN reports. The move brings the 26-year-old back into the fold after a solid 2019-20 campaign with the franchise.

Payton averaged 10.0 points and 7.2 assists per game for the Knicks last but was waived earlier so that New York could knock $7 million off of his partially guaranteed $8 million contract.

By signing Payton to a reported $5 million deal, they’ll effectively save $2 million. Of course, the Knicks briefly had the opportunity to move on from Payton should other moves have arisen on the first day of free agency.

Payton has bounced around several teams over the course of his brief career and has yet to really stick. As a returning player to the Knicks, Payton will get a chance to grow with a team approaching its first training camp as a true rebuilding team.

In Payton’s first year in New York, the organization went through two head coaches, a front office regime change, and a concerted decision to abandon a fruitless pursuit of the No. 8 seed in order to focus more on organic development.

The New York Knicks will part ways with 26-year-old point guard Elfrid Payton, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. The move will free up $7 million for New York given Payton’s non-guaranteed 2020-21 season.

Payton had a solid 2019-20 campaign with a confusingly built Knicks team and averaged 10.0 points and 7.2 assists per game. He inked a two-year deal with a partially guaranteed $8.0 million year in 2020-21.

Payton has now played for four teams in three seasons and will set out to find a fifth. He’s been productive at each of his stops but hasn’t had an opportunity to fill a role on a team in contention for a playoff spot.

The 26-year-old was the No. 10 pick in the 2014 NBA Draft.

Knicks forward Marcus Morris expressed regret for saying Jae Crowder has “got a lot of female tendencies on the court” following a Wednesday night brouhaha.

Crowder drew the ire of New York’s players when he took a three-pointer with 48 seconds remaining in the Utah Jazz’s 127-106 blowout at Madison Square Garden, and was shoved into the stands by Elfrid Payton.

Both players were ejected.

Per The NY Post:

“I just had problem with the last shot,” Payton said. “It had nothing to do with how the game went. You just don’t do that. He knows better than that (to take the shot). And you know what comes with that.”

The fans chanted “Sell the team’’ as owner James Dolan left his seat as the melee ensued with [Julius] Randle and Marcus Morris also getting into the fray. Dolan could be seen shouting at security during the chants, specifically directing them to a vocal teenager.

“He’s got a lot of female tendencies on the court, flopping and throwing his head back,” Morris said of Crowder. “He’s soft, very woman-like.”

Morris added Crowder was “unprofessional” in taking the shot.

Elfrid Payton has missed the last 10 games as a result of a strained right hamstring and won’t see the court for at least a week and a half. The team has announced that Payton’s injury still isn’t fully healed and that he’ll be re-evaluated at the end of November.

Payton signed a two-year, $16 million deal with the Knicks this summer and was in prime position to compete for the starting spot with Frank Ntilikina and Dennis Smith Jr.

In the four games that Payton played in October, he averaged 8.0 points and 3.8 assists. While those numbers fall short of the ones he’s posted at previous stops in Orlando, Phoenix and New Orleans, there’s plenty of room for growth.

The Knicks currently sit in the second-last spot in the Eastern Conference with a record of 4-10. While there’s plenty of turnover on the roster, the lack of success has some contemplating head coach David Fizdale’s future with the organization.

New York will welcome Dennis Smith Jr. to preseason action for the first time on Wednesday, just in time to compete with fellow Knicks guards Elfrid Payton and Frank Ntilikina for the team’s starting point guard nod.

Smith Jr. has been sidelined with a back strain, missing the team’s first two contests but Ian Begley of SportsNet New York reports that the third-year guard was healthy enough to practice this week and is now ready to go.

Smith Jr. says that his latest back episode is unrelated to the back strain that held him out of 10 of the team’s final 14 games last season, not long after the team acquired him in the blockbuster trade that sent Kristaps Porzingis to Dallas.

Injuries, however, won’t be the only thing that Smith Jr. may have to stave off as the regular season approaches. Both Payton and Ntilikina have shown flashes of potential and could command minutes if not a legitimate crack at the first-string.

Payton joins the Knicks as a free agent addition, spending last season with the New Orleans Pelicans. The 25-year-old’s five-game triple-double stretch last March is just a small sign of what the guard is capable of and the Knicks saw fit to take a two-year, $16 million flyer on him.

Ntilikina, who most recently drew attention with a solid performance at the FIBA World Cup is another option for the franchise. He too, however, will have to get a handle on a lingering health issue before being completely cleared to play basketball.

Knicks coach David Fizdale insists that the team is happy to be cautious with their players during the preseason but confirms that it’s the guard’s groin that is causing discomfort. Ntilikina missed the last six weeks of 2018-19 with a groin injury.

The lack of healthy bodies may add an additional element of confusion to an already complicated log jam at the point guard position but the Knicks will take their time figuring it out.

“I don’t know who has the edge right now,” Fizdale told Mike Vorkunov of The Athletic. “We’ve still got two more games to go.”

The New York Knicks have agreed to a two-year deal with Elfrid Payton, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. The 25-year-old former lottery pick will earn $16 million over the course of the deal.

The second year of Payton’s new contract will come with a team option, Michael Scotto of The Athletic reports.

Payton has bounced around over the course of his young career but has shown flashes of high-ceiling potential along the way. In 42 games for the Pelicans in 2018-19, the point guard averaged 10.6 points, 7.6 assists and 5.2 rebounds per game.

Payton will slide into a Knicks backcourt that already includes Dennis Smith Jr. and Emmanuel Mudiay. If he can showcase the versatility that powered him to a streak of five consecutive triple-doubles in March he could make a case for serious minutes in that rotation.

In an interview with HoopsHype’s Alex Kennedy, Payton said that he’s looking forward to making the game “even easier” for Booker.

“I’m very excited to play with him. He’s a really great talent – someone who can shoot the ball extremely well, someone who can really score from anywhere on the court. I’m looking forward to trying to make the game even easier for him.

“I also think I can feed off of him because I know he’s going to draw a ton of attention from defenses. That will leave a lot of open opportunities for me, so I have to knock those shots down.

“I think we can be really good together. We definitely have a chance to be special.”

Pelicans 138 (29-26), Nets 128 (19-38)

Huge comebacks that just come short has been a theme for the Nets all year and Saturday night was no different. Despite trailing by as many as 28, the Nets were able to send the game to double-overtime, Allen Crabbe’s 3-pointer to end regulation tied things up, but weren’t able to overcome Anthony Davis’ monster stat line of 44 points, 17 rebounds, six blocks and three steals.

Bucks 111 (31-24), Magic 104 (18-37)

The Magic couldn’t get the win in the first game of the post-Elfrid Payton era, but Shelvin Mack showed promise by notching 19 points and 10 assists in just 28 minutes. Giannis Antetokounmpo led the Bucks with 32 points.

Clippers 98 (28-26), 76ers 112 (28-25)

The Process brothers stuffed the stat sheet as Joel Embiid dropped 29 points and 16 rebounds while Ben Simmons notched a 14-point, 10-assist double-double.

Lou Williams led the Clippers with 23 points.

Wizards 101 (32-24), Bulls 90 (19-36)

Likely gassed from going the distance agains the Timberwolves the night before, the Bulls fell flat while shooting just 42 percent from the field and 28 percent from behind the arc. Tomas Satoransky led the Wizards with 25 points on 10-for-12 shooting from the field.

Lakers 123 (23-32), Mavericks 130 (18-38)

Isaiah Thomas came off the bench in his Lakers debut but he made it clear he deserved to be on the floor as he scored 16 points in just 14 minutes in the first half. Thomas finished with 22 points and six assists, but the Lakers struggled with ball security as they turned the ball over 17 times, ultimately costing them the game.

Dirk Nowtizki scored a team-high 24 points for the Mavericks.

Spurs 105 (35-22), Warriors 122 (43-13)

The Warriors continued to show up for primetime games as all five starters plus David West scored in double-digits. Perhaps the most impressive stat of the night, Nick Young managed to scored nine points on 3-for-5 shooting despite just four minutes on the court.

Nuggets 123 (30-26), Suns 113 (18-39)

Elfrid Payton impressed in his Suns debut with 19 points, nine assists and six rebounds. Three other starters–T.J. Warren (31), Dragan Bender (23) and birthday boy Josh Jackson (20)–scored in double-digits but Phoenix struggled without Devin Booker as Wilson Chandler, Nikola Jokic and Will Barton combined for 72 points.

The New York Knicks have reportedly expressed interest in trading for Magic point guard Elfrid Payton.

Knicks GM Scott Perry is a former executive in Orlando, drafted the 23-year-old.

Payton is averaging 13.0 points and 6.3 assists in his fourth season with the Magic.

Per the NY Post:

According to an NBA source who has spoken to Knicks brass, Perry has interest in reuniting with the 23-year-old Payton at the trade deadline, feeling he can get him at a discount and keep his rookie point guard Frank Ntilikina out of the deal.

Of course, it’s unclear how the Knicks will approach the deadline after Tuesday night’s devastating injury to Kristaps Porzingis less than 48 hours before the deadline.

The Magic’s new GM, John Hammond, is looking to move on from Payton, who will become a restricted free agent this summer because his rookie contract expires after the season.

Russell Westbrook, James Harden, LeBron James, Nikola Jokic, Draymond Green, and Elfrid Payton. Those are the only guys in the NBA who notched five or more triple-doubles in 2016-17.

Not bad company for Orlando’s point guard.

Elfrid Payton has always demonstrated an ability to keep improving his game. As a freshman at the University of Louisiana at Lafayette, he averaged just 7.2 points on 45 percent shooting from the field. Two seasons later, right before he declared for the draft, he was second in the Sun Belt in scoring, posting 19.1 per game on 51 percent from the field.

Same story in the NBA, where Payton has progressed steadily, finishing with averages of 12.8 points, 6.5 assists, and 4.7 rebounds this past season. So Elfrid knows a thing or two about what it takes to elevate your play. He imparted this wisdom to other young ballers at the Jr. NBA Philippines National Training Camp recently. Set in Manila, this event featured 37 boys and 37 girls all competing for spots on the Jr. NBA All-Star team, which will embark on an overseas journey later in 2017.

We checked in with Payton, who had never been to the Philippines before, while he was still out there. “I’ve been having a good time,” he told SLAM, noting that he’s been able to both help out the athletes and explore the area.

The intense fandom and passion for basketball in the Philippines is well known, but Elfrid stressed that it was even more than he anticipated. “Just the people around here,” he said, “you can tell that [the game] is growing.”

After discussing the trip, Payton went on to address the season, his plans to further improve, his role model growing up, and the current NBA playoffs.

***

SLAM: What are your plans for the rest of the offseason once the trip ends? Are there specific things you want to work on?

EP: Just continue to try and get stronger, work on my finishing abilities, and my jump shot.

SLAM: Can you reflect on this past season, both in terms of your individual performance and the team’s performance?

EP: I think it was an okay season for me…I picked it up as the season went on, as I try and do every year—play my best ball towards the end of the season. Just try to continue to get better.

As a team… You know, it was a tough situation. You got a new coach [Orlando has had four different head coaches in the three years Payton has been with the team. – Ed.], so it takes awhile to implement a new system and gain chemistry. I think we’re moving in the right direction though, especially with the way we played after the All-Star break.

SLAM: What else makes you confident that you guys are headed in the right direction?

EP: We’re starting to figure each other out. Like I said, implementing a new system takes time. It takes time for coaches to figure out players and how to use certain players. So I think just the coaching staff being able to figure the players out and the players being able to figure out the coaching staff…We finally started to gel a little bit at the end of the season. We were able to add Terrence Ross. I think that was a good addition for us.

SLAM: You had five triple-doubles this season, which was tied for the fifth most in the NBA. Did your approach to the game or mindset change at all?

EP: No, just trying to impact the game as much as I can. Most people think you can only impact the game by scoring. I just try and do a lot of different things, whether it be rebounding or trying to get my teammates involved or on the defensive end.

SLAM: Do you have a favorite moment or game from the season?

EP: My favorite win would probably be against San Antonio [Orlando won that game 95-83. Payton had 10 points, 4 assists, and 3 steals in 23 minutes of action. – Ed.]. We were able to get that win on the road, against a team that doesn’t really lose at home…That was a big moment for us.

SLAM: I read that the guy you looked up to as a kid was Allen Iverson. Why?

EP: I don’t really play like Allen Iverson. I just think that he was somebody that was tough, competitive. He always gave it his all when he was out there. He was someone that was just himself. He didn’t try to be anybody [else]. I thought he was somebody that was cool to look up to.

SLAM: Have you been able to catch the playoffs out there? And who you got winning it all?

EP: Yes, I have been able to catch the games. I have the Spurs winning it. Tough loss [on Sunday], but I still have them winning.

SLAM: I know it’s early, but have you set any goals for next season?

EP: The goal is always to make the playoffs and make a run in the playoffs. That’s always the goal.

Elfrid Payton has assisted on 90 of Aaron Gordon’s buckets this season. The second closest on that list, Nik Vucevic, has given Gordon 31 assists. That’s a huge gap.

Payton’s chemistry with Gordon pops up all the time. Payton repeatedly finds Gordon cutting to the rim each and every game.

During tonight 115-107 win over the Nets, Payton and Gordon hooked up yet again. They went with an off the glass alley-oop this time, resulting in a major highlight. Watch it above.

Bulls 91 (31-33), Magic 98 (24-41)

Orlando is not tanking. They have shown every indication of trying to win ballgames since the All-Star break.

Although Nik Vucevic has missed the last two games with an achilles flare up, the Magic have found a way to get the offense going.

His name is Elfrid Payton, who has triple-doubled in two consecutive games.

Nets 105 (11-52), Hawks 110 (35-29)

Atlanta may look like a solid No. 5 seed, but if the Pacers, Heat or even the Bucks can make a strong push through the final 20 games, ATL could fall in the standings.

Since the break, the Hawks have a record of 3-5 and their offense has been the sixth-worst in the L.

There have been some bright spots, namely Tim Hardaway Jr, who’s thriving in the sixth man role and making a case for a big payday this summer.

Hornets 101 (28-36), Heat 108 (31-34)

Since the All-Star break, Miami has played like the best team in the Eastern Conference. They’re outscoring opponents by an average of 10.5 points per 100 possessions.

They’re taking good care of the ball and rebounding at a high rate.

And of course, they have Mr. Ice in His Veins himself, Dion Waiters.

Knicks 93 (26-39), Bucks 104 (30-33)

Three words: Giannis is unfair.

Milwaukee has turned things around since the break, going 5-3. Khris Middleton’s return has been a huge help, and Malcolm “The Prez” Brogdon has been really solid as a starter.

But they’re getting beat badly on the boards, which could be a real issue down the stretch as they fight for a playoff spot.

Raptors 94 (38-26), Pelicans 87 (25-40)

Toronto has struggled to score without Kyle Lowry, but they’ve remained a good defensive team in his absence.

The Pelicans have been atrocious on offense since the break, coming in dead last (by a mile) in offensive rating, despite having the Twin Towers.

Jonas Valanciunas played a big part in neutralizing New Orleans’ front line, giving Toronto 25 points and 13 boards on the night.

Jazz 115 (41-24), Rockets 108 (44-21)

The West’s No. 3 and No. 4 seeds went head-to-head in Houston, and this one really wasn’t even all that close.

Utah led for mostly the entire game, shot 54 percent from the field and controlled the glass.

Houston was missing Ryan Anderson, so their small lineups had no chance against Utah’s height and length.

Clippers 91 (38-26), T-Wolves 107 (26-37)

Check these stats out. Since the All-Star break, Minnesota has been the best defensive team in the League (97.3 defensive rating) and best rebounding team in the L (56.1 rebounding percentage).

Karl-Anthony Towns is averaging 27.7 points on 64 percent shooting with 16.4 rebounds per game. He’s doing stuff like this every night:

And to make things even more interesting, they signed Lance Stephenson to a second 10-day deal. And he’ll be doing stuff like this on the regular.

It may have taken several months, but the T-Wolves are officially the League Pass squad that everyone thought they’d be before the season.

Pistons 98 (31-33), Pacers 115 (33-31)

Indiana blew the game open with a 20-5 run to the end the third quarter.

Paul George had 13 of his 21 points in the period.

Kings 104 (25-39), Spurs 114 (50-13)

San Antonio was down by 28 points with roughly 4 minutes left in the second quarter, and they eventually took back the lead around mid-way through the fourth.

Even with Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge resting, the Spurs found a way to complete the largest comeback in franchise history.

They’re also just a game-and-a-half away the the No. 1 overall seed—and homecourt advantage throughout the playoffs.

Wizards 123 (39-24), Nuggets 113 (29-35)

Washington built a 24-point lead by the third quarter, and it was too much for Denver to overcome.

The Nuggets struggled without their star big man Nikola Jokic, who was out with an illness.

Mason Plumlee started in Jokic’s place and put up a nice line of 19, 10 and 5, but will probably be sore from this kick by Markieff Morris tomorrow:

Celtics 99 (41-24), Warriors 86 (52-12)

Boston held the Warriors to just 12 points in the fourth quarter, outscoring the Dubs by 15 in the final frame.

Golden State has actually has a negative point differential on the season during the fourth quarter—something you wouldn’t expect from the team with the best record in the League.

Stephen Curry had 23 points by the end of the third quarter, and probably started talking trash prematurely when he nailed this buzzer-beater against Jaylen Brown.

Avery Bradley and Marcus Smart made the Warrior backcourt work for everything they got, and Isaiah Thomas provided the scoring punch with 25.

But Payton, whose father was a perennial CFL all-star defensive end, bested his fellow PG with a highlight reel one-handed grab.

Magic 111 (22-49), Blazers 104 (44-23)

Elfrid Payton (22 points, 10 assists, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 turnover, 10-13 from the field) made a statement Friday night with his second straight triple-double while shooting efficiently the entire night. He is the first rookie since Antoine Walker (1996-97) to post back-to-back triple doubles. Payton’s herky-jerky rhythm of play keeps opponents on their heels, and Damian Lillard (18 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds) and the Blazers frontcourt had no answers for the crafty rookie. This is a prime example of what the team lost when Wes Matthews went down for the season. Even though Arron Afflalo (7 points, 3 rebounds) is serviceable, he simply can’t bring the type of hard-nose defense that “Iron Man” does on a nightly basis. Payton got plenty of help from Victor Oladipo (22 points, 8 rebounds) and Nikola Vucevic (22 points, 8 rebounds), as these three combined to score 22 points each. The Blazers let this one slip away in the fourth quarter. Even though Aldridge (31 points, 10 rebounds) finished with a game-high 31 points, he only scored five in the final quarter while the Magic outscored the Blazers 36-23. With the Blazers, Rockets, Clippers and Mavs all right around the same place in the standings, this is a bad game for Portland to let slip by. The Blazers have now lost three games in a row.

76ers 97 (17-52), Knicks 81 (14-55)

Nerlens Noel (career-high 23 points, 14 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 blocks) has really started to turn a corner as the season is coming to a close. He racks up the blocks, steals, rebounds and points to some degree almost every time he steps onto the floor. Friday night, Noel stepped up his offensive game, finding his touch in the paint and making his free throws. Whenever Joel Embiid finally gets back to full health, these two are going to cause major problems in the paint. Even though the Knicks only managed to put up 81 points, Alexey Shved (25 points, 7-8 on 3-pointers) had another strong performance. Not only has Shved scored in double figures in 13 of the past 14 games, Philly’s guard has reached the 20-point plateau in three straight games. His team, though, only managed to shoot 36.2 percent from the field and scored 33 total points in the second half. With the loss, the Knicks fall to a League-worse 14-55.

Nets 129 (28-39), Bucks 127 (34-35) 3OT

The Nets kept their playoff hopes alive thanks to a thrilling triple-overtime victory over the reeling Bucks. Even though Brooklyn has had one of the most inconsistent seasons in the League, Friday night’s game showcased what the Nets thought this franchise would turn into for years to come. Brook Lopez (32 points, season-high 18 rebounds) dominated the paint and finally used his size to his advantage in gobbling up the boards. While Lopez controlled the interior, Joe Johnson (20 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 4-6 on 3-pointers) came through in the clutch as he has so often done in his career. Not only did Johnson drill the game-tying 3-pointer with just over a minute left in regulation to send this game to one overtime, but the veteran guard also knocked down another trey with 18.1 seconds remaining in the second overtime to send this game into the third and final overtime. Lopez then scored the first five points of the third overtime and the Nets wouldn’t give up the lead the rest of the way. Thaddeus Young (24 points, 5 rebounds, 3-5 on 3-pointers) had one of his best games as a Net, bringing a certain level of scrappiness this team needs. With Khris Middleton (29 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals) continuing to play lights out, all five Bucks starters reached double-digits and all played relatively well. Zaza Pachulia (22 points, 21 rebounds, 7 assists) had a monster 20-20 game, including 18 offensive boards. He really asserted himself on both ends of the floor and helped keep his team in the game. He played a key role in the Bucks obliterating the Nets on the boards as they outrebounding them 81-53. However, in a game in which their team scored 127 points, Milwaukee’s bench only managed to scored a measly 14 points. The Nets bench poured in 49 points with Bojan Bogdanovic (17 points, 5 assists) playing 48 minutes. The Bucks are now below .500 for the first time since they were 15-16 on December 27. They have gone 3-13 in their last 16 games.

Cavaliers 95 (45-26), Pacers 92 (30-38)

With LeBron James (29 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists) leading the way—even with a cold—Cleveland used a balanced attack to sneak by the pesky Pacers. Kevin Love (11 points, 13 rebounds) didn’t have a huge offensive night, but the Cavs power forward finished with a game-high 13 rebounds. Luis Scola (14 points, 11 rebounds) came close as he earned a double-double. George Hill (24 points, 4-8 on 3-pointers) and Roy Hibbert (20 points, 8 rebounds) tried to carry the entire Indiana offense all on their own, but they didn’t get the support they needed down the stretch. Trailing 93-92 with 2:03 left in the game, the Pacers had six chances to take the lead against the Cavs…and missed six consecutive shots. After J.R. Smith (11 points) knocked down two free throws, C.J. Miles (8 points) missed a 3-point attempt to make it seven straight missed shots. The Cavs are getting closer and closer to clinching the No. 2 seed in the East.

Heat 108 (32-36), Nuggets 91 (26-44)

The Nuggets came out of the gate firing, but the Heat finished off strong to remain in the No. 7 seed in the East. Wilson Chandler (13 points, 7 rebounds) scored eight of the team’s first 21 points as Denver built up a 10-point lead in the first seven minutes of the game. However, the Heat came storming back in the second quarter behind Dwyane Wade (22 points, 4 assists) and Michael Beasley (9 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals). Miami outscored Denver 37-23 in the second quarter. While Wade has been on a tear of late, Beasley was surprisingly valuable in many ways Friday night, having one of his most balanced games of the season. Hassan Whiteside (14 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals) controlled the interior against the undersized Nuggets backcourt. Miami outrebounded Denver 44-35. Even though all five Nuggets starters scored in double-digits, their bench provided no support as they only scored 16 points compared to the Heat’s 33 bench points.

Bulls 108 (42-28), Raptors 92 (41-28)

The Bulls big men controlled this game as the Lowry-less Raptors continued to slide down the East standings. Nikola Mirotic (29 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks) stepped up yet again for the Bulls, becoming a bad matchup for the Raptors frontline as the game moved on. He only hit 3-11 from deep but really stretched the floor with his shooting and ball handling. Mirotic entered this game averaging 20.8 ppg and 8.2 rpg in the month of March. Even though Joakim Noah (8 points, 14 assists, 10 rebounds) might not have had much of an impact scoring-wise, Chicago’s center had a double-double in rebounds and assists while distributing the ball effectively from the elbow. Jonas Valanciunas (5 points, 6 rebounds) was limited to 24 minutes while Patrick Patterson (17 points, 3-5 on 3-pointers) was decent off the bench. DeMar DeRozan (27 points, 7 rebounds) led the Raptors in scoring, but Chicago slowly wore down Toronto during the first three quarters in building up a 86-68 lead going into the final quarter. The Raptors only shot 38.0 percent from the field while the Bulls shot 53.2 percent. Chicago has now passed Toronto by half a game for the No. 3 seed in the East.

Thunder 123 (39-30), Hawks 115 (53-16)

Just another Thunder game and another triple-double for Russell Westbrook (36 points, 14 assists, 10 rebounds, 17-17 on free throws), who can’t seem to come back down to Earth since this recent surge of out-of-this-world play. This was Westbrook’s seventh triple-double since the All-Star break and 17th of his career. Not only did he post the impressive line, Westbrook also came through yet again when the game was on the line. Going into the fourth quarter, OKC trailed 95-90 as bench players Paul Millsap (19 points, 4 steals), Dennis Schroder (21 points, 3-5 on 3-pointers) and Pero Antic (22 points, 4-6 on 3-pointers) combined to score 54 points through three quarters. (However, these three only managed to score eight points in the final 12 minutes.) Westbrook then took the game over in the fourth as he scored or assisted on 26 of his team’s 33 points. The Hawks only managed 20 points in the quarter, falling behind by double-digits at the hand of Russ. Guards Dion Waiters (season-high 26 points, 11-18 from the field) and Anthony Morrow (21 points, 6-10 on 3-pointers) found their stroke, especially Morrow. When the 3-point specialist can start knocking down treys, it helps opens up the floor for Westbrook.

Grizzlies 112 (48-21), Mavericks 101 (44-26)

The Mavs hung around as long as they could before the Grizzlies blew this game wide open. After Rajon Rondo (10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) hit a turnaround bank shot with 8:11 left in the the third quarter, the Mavs only trailed 56-44. However, with Zach Randolph (21 points, 5 assists) and Marc Gasol (15 points, 10 rebounds) leading the way, Memphis went on a quick 16-4 run to put this game out of reach for good. Tyson Chandler (9 points, 13 rebounds, 3 blocks) does so many good things for Dallas on the defensive end of the floor. However, when he goes to the bench and Dirk Nowitzki (16 points, 6 rebounds), Amare Stoudemire (4 points, 4 rebounds) and Charlie Villanueva (12 points) have to start protecting the pair and going after boards, the Mavs simply become soft down low. And Friday, the entire defense fell apart in a third quarter in which they allowed the Grizzlies to score 39 points—after they only scored 44 points in the first half. Mike Conley (14 points, 3 assists) played well in his return to the starting lineup after missing four games. While the Grizzlies shot 53.2 percent from the field, Nowitzki, Monta Ellis (12 points, 2 assists) and Chandler Parsons (12 points, 5 rebounds) combined to shoot 11-34 (32.4 percent) from the field. As promising as the Mavs’ last three wins of their five-game home stand have been, their finish Friday night washed away many of the positives. Dallas has now fallen to the seven seen in the West.

Spurs 101 (43-25), Celtics 89 (30-38)

Tim Duncan (10 points, 6 rebounds) established himself early while Kawhi Leonard (22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals) and Tony Parker (15 points, 7 assists) pulled through in the end as the Spurs picked up the wire-to-wire win at the AT&T Center. Duncan had two steals and a two-handed flush in the first three minutes as San Antonio jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead. When Duncan can assert himself right out of the gate, it puts a certain amount of energy in all of his teammates. Since the Spurs really started to turn their season around though, Leonard and Parker have been the main reasons for their success. These two helped the Spurs build up a 25-point second half lead that turned out to look much better due to a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter. However, once Popovich put Leonard and Parker back in the game, the Spurs regained control. Evan Turner (17 points, 4 assists) and Avery Bradley (16 points) led the way for Boston as Jae Crowder (14 points, 6 rebounds) gave the Celtics a boost off the bench. Marcus Smart (10 points, 4 assists) showed some immaturity issues during his time at Oklahoma State and they might have reappeared Friday night when he received a flagrant 2 for punching Matt Bonner in the lower area. Hopefully this was a one-time incident for the rookie guard.

Kings 101 (23-45), Hornets 91 (29-38)

Aside from Derrick Williams (13 points) having one of the most powerful dunks of the season, the Kings played one of their most complete games of late thanks to a big time performance from Rudy Gay (33 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals). From time to time, Gay can really take over a game with his all-around offensive skills. He can shoot it from deep, pull up from midrange and get into the paint. He nailed a pair of threes and made 9-10 free throws Friday night. His biggest shot of the night came in the form of an and-one when he extended Sacramento’s lead from seven points to 87-77 midway through the fourth quarter. The Hornets would get no closer than six the rest of the way. Even though Gerald Henderson (20 points, 5 rebounds) had an efficient night in leading his team in scoring, the Hornets had an awful shooting performance. If you take away Henderson’s and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s (13 points, 7 rebounds) 13-25 (52 percent) shooting from the field, Charlotte only managed to shoot 23-66 (34.8 percent). If the Hornets want to squeeze into the playoffs, they can’t put up offensive duds like this down the stretch.

Warriors 112 (55-13), Pelicans 96 (37-32)

The Warriors had no problem handling the undermanned Pelicans as they built up a 98-71 lead early on in the fourth quarter and cruised to a victory. Harrison Barnes (22 points, 9-13 from the field) continued his recent strong play while Stephen Curry (16 points, 11 assists, 4-17 from the field) notched a double-double despite his poor shooting on the night. This is the first time in Barnes’ career he has scored at least 20 points in back-to-back regular season games. Leandro Barbosa (12 points, 4 assists, +26) really played well in the second unit and clearly had an impact during his 23 minutes on the floor. Even though the Pelicans had six players in double figures with Norris Cole (16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) leading the way off the bench, the lack of Anthony Davis and Omer Asik in the paint made all those points…well, a moot point. They couldn’t contain any of Golden State’s penetration, and that is why the Warriors had a 58-30 advantage in points in the paint. The League’s best team record-wise is now four wins away from their franchise record.

Clippers 113 (45-25), Wizards 99 (40-29)

For all the MVP-buzz Stephen Curry, James Harden, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis have been getting, Chris Paul (30 points, 15 assists, 6 rebounds, 1 turnover) should at least be given legitimate consideration with the way he carried this team when Blake Griffin (22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) was out and continues to dominate down the stretch. Paul just seems in complete control of his game and Doc River’s offense right now, seemingly making all the right shots and passes. However, LA’s defense is what turned this game into a double-digit victory. The Clippers held the Wizards to only two baskets during the final 6:54 of the game, shutting down guards John Wall (19 points, 10 assists) and Bradley Beal (18 points, 3-5 on 3-pointers). Again, Paul’s pesky perimeter defense played a large part in containing Washington’s backcourt. DeAndre Jordan (10 points, 23 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals) also does a fantastic job limiting opponents to just one shot per possession with the way he gobbles up rebounds. He may not be one of the stars on the team, but J.J. Redick (26 points, 4-7 on 3-pointers) has been on an absolute tear for the past few weeks. The Clippers go to him early and often as they are trying to open up the floor from the moment the ball is tipped. Redick nailed two 3-pointers before three minutes had even passed in this game. Winners of their last three games and on the rise, Los Angeles seems to be in a great groove right now.

Every NBA Draft is filled with talent. The 2014 NBA Draft, though, was stocked with even more than usual. From the first pick on down, every single player selected can play basketball at the highest level. Aside from superb skills, one other attribute the Draft class shares is a dogged work ethic. All of the guys, no matter where they’re from, persevered to make the League and are willing to redouble their efforts to excel now that they’re in it. To that end, we spoke with some of the most promising rookies about their winding roads to the NBA. #LetsElevate

We kicked it with Orlando Magic rookie Elfrid Payton, who was reared right outside New Orleans. Elfrid may have spent his college career at a small program, but he’s definitely thinking big about what’s next. Learn even more about Elfrid’s path to the pros by reading his SLAM feature here.

We got to talk to Miami Heat rookie Shabazz Napier, the Most Outstanding Player in last season’s NCAA Tournament, about his humble beginnings in Roxbury, MA, and the way he has fought to achieve his dream. For more from our day with Shabazz, read our feature story here.

We hung out with Minnesota Timberwolves rookie Zach LaVine, who calmly threw down some sick, 360-degree dunks before breaking down his highly focused mentality. Read our full story on Zach’s journey to the League by clicking here.

Elfrid Payton can envision his perfect day. It involves a morning spent in bed, an afternoon filled with funny movies while lazing on the couch, and evening of dominating his friends at video games. Today, the last Thursday before the start of his NBA career, is far from perfect.

Early this a.m., Payton, a long and lean point guard who was selected 10th overall in the 2014 NBA Draft by the Philadelphia 76ers before being traded to the Orlando Magic, had practice. After that, he got dressed up and attended a mandatory lunch with the team’s owners. Once the glad-handing wrapped, he ran to an afternoon-long interview with a magazine. From there, he was whisked away to an event with fans at a local car dealership. He didn’t make it home until well into the night.

Despite the grueling day of work, the 20-year-old Payton is not mad. After all, he’s not supposed to be here.

“I do kinda represent those people who are always told that they’ll never make it,” says Payton. “I’m proof that you’ve got to continue to believe in yourself and work until people realize and open their eyes.”

If a lot of NBA players overcome a mountain worth of obstacles to reach the League, Payton had to hurdle Everest to make it. Growing up in Gretna, LA, which is shadowed by nearby New Orleans, the only son of Danielle and Elfrid Sr. did his best to avoid the not uncommon drug- and gang-related traps that ensnared many in his neighborhood. While Payton can’t pinpoint the exact reason why he made it out of Gretna unscathed, he thinks it has to do with his close-knit household and a love for sports.

ep_top

“My support group kept me away from negativity,” says Payton. He grew up in a house with both of his parents and five sisters. “And sports was another outlet that helped me stay away from things like that.”

“Sports kept him away from a lot of that,” affirms Elfrid Sr., who was a standout player in the Canadian Football League, and is every bit as talkative as his son is quiet. “Me being in his life helped steer him away from that, too.”

To be fair, a lot of Payton’s peers in the NBA were forged through similar upbringings. The difference is, though, that many of them were identified as basketball savants early in life and were then helped by a cadre of coaches and professionals. Payton, on the other hand, was never really ranked by any major scouting service and received collegiate scholarship offers from only Xavier University of Louisiana and the University of Louisiana, Lafayette.

“We started him in school early,” says Sr., who notes that Elfrid should have been a junior in high school when he was a senior, “so he hadn’t developed physically enough for a lot of the schools.”

Nevertheless, what originally appeared as a curse became a blessing. Payton flourished at Louisiana-Lafayette. As a freshman, while adjusting to school and honing his game at the school’s sparse facilities, Payton started 11 games. As a sophomore, he averaged 15.9 ppg, 5.5 apg, 5.6 rpg and was named First-Team All-Sun Belt. That summer, Payton was a surprise selection to USA’s U-19 National Team.

“A lot of people thought I didn’t belong there,” says Payton. “Coming from a small school, they didn’t even think I should be in the tryout. But you know, I went out there and played well, made the team and was able to stand out.”

This past season, as a junior, Payton upped his averages to 19.2 ppg, 5.9 and and 6.0 rpg. His two-way efforts were finally noticed by the nation, as he was named the Defensive Player of the Year. Months later, after stellar workouts for NBA teams, the rangy righty, whose shock of hair was still more well-known than his explosive first step, went 10th in the Draft. “I can’t credit anything but hard work,” says Payton.

In a sense, Payton has already made it. He has an apartment with a view of the Orlando sky, a car that can play Lil Wayne loud enough to crack cement and a spot in the Magic’s starting lineup. Still, after being slept on his entire life, Payton has a deep desire to elevate even higher.

“You stay hungry by wanting to be the best,” says Payton. You stay hungry until everybody knows and can say that you’re the best—and I want to be one of the greatest to ever play.”

Over the years, Chris Paul has been known to invite a number of his point guard friends to his CP3 Elite Point Guard Camp in Winston-Salem, NC, and this year was no different. Newly signed Suns lead guard Isaiah Thomas made the trek to put some work in, as did Orlando Magic rookie point guard Elfrid Payton. We watched him train for the NBA Draft back in early May in L.A., when he was projected as a late first-round pick.

We caught back up with the Magic playmaker to rap about Summer League, what he learned from Chris Paul, and what his first summer as a pro has been like.

SLAM: How do you think Summer League went for you?

Elfrid Payton: Summer League was good. I learned a lot getting out there and playing at this level. Summer League is a lot different than a real game, but it’s the closest thing that I have right now. I definitely learned and got better each day.

SLAM: What was it like playing with that much talent?

EP: I had guys who were getting paid to knock down shots and fighting to make the team, so it’s a little bit different because obviously, I didn’t have those guys in college.

SLAM: What have you learned from Chris Paul in your time together?

EP: He said I need to slow down and play at a good pace. He told me a lot of little things to do throughout the season. Keep your body right, eat right, and things like that.

SLAM: If you had to pinpoint one thing in Summer League that you were really taken back by, what would that be?

EP: Just the speed of the game. My first game was such a whirlwind, but after that, I was able to adjust my game and get back playing at my pace.

SLAM: What’s your first summer been like as a pro?

EP: Man, I’m just working. I’m just trying to get as much work in as I can to be as prepared as I can for the season. There’s nothing like playing in an NBA game, but I’m trying to do whatever I can to make it as close to that as possible.

SLAM: Since you signed your contract with the Magic, have you done anything to treat yourself or your family yet?

EP: Not yet, man. I got the condo and then we’re probably about to go back home in a few weeks and look at the housing stuff. We’re probably not going to move, but I’m definitely going to do a little something for them.

SLAM: Only coming out of high school with one DI offer, what kind of advice can you give to players who fall under the radar like you did?

EP: It doesn’t matter where you’re ranked or who is recruiting you. If you put in the work, they will find you. Hard work pays off.

SLAM: How do you feel about playing alongside Victor Oladipo, given that he played some point last year?

EP: I think I can play off of the ball and I know he can play off of the ball if he needs to. I think we’re really going to hurt people defensively. Defense is going to win us games. We can both cause a lot of turnovers and get out in transition.

The day of the NBA Draft is almost here and it’s the realization of a lifelong dream for the selected. What every player wants is a chance to show what they can do, location of that opportunity lies secondary. It won’t be the best 60 players selected in this Draft as the NBA continues to rate players with potential above players who can play and, most importantly, know how to play.

Look for teams to use this opportunity to trade existing assets to get younger (and cap lighter) as well as to trade down.

Here are the top players in the Draft (it doesn’t mean they will be taken at these picks) in what is one of the deepest draft boards in years.

The post NBA Draft Tour: Elfrid Payton Workout appeared first on SLAM.

]]>
Every year, there is one player in the Draft who causes fans to wonder, ‘Where the hell did that guy come from?’ People who followed college hoops closely were well aware of Elfrid Payton after he exploded at the 2013 USA U19 tryouts, but the 6-4 point guard is still an enigma to some after coming out of Louisiana-Lafayette.

Playing his high school ball at Ehret High School in New Orleans, Payton shined. He was the District 9-5A Player of the Year during his senior campaign and showed off his versatility, but was still a 6-1 guard with a shaky J. He owned an offer from the University of Xavier-New Orleans (a DII powerhouse) and waited until late in his senior season to decide on a school, which ultimately wound up being his lone DI offer: Louisiana-Lafayette.

Three years later, he finds himself on the verge of being selected in the NBA Draft.

“Just hard work, man,” Payton responded when asked his rapid improvement. “A lot of hard work.”

While there was a lot of hard work, there was also productivity that followed suit. Elfrid was one of the few players in the country to average 19 points, 6 rebounds and 6 assists per game while shooting over 50 percent from the field. The Ragin’ Cajuns won too. He carried his unit to a Sun Belt Conference tourney and while he fell to Douggy McBuckets and Creighton, he left his mark in the eyes of NBA personnel.

We caught up with Payton in L.A., where he was training with ex-UCLA Bruin and Washington Bullet, Don MacLean. A drill sergeant for details, MacLean put his pupil through drills that showed much more than you were able to see at the collegiate level. Going through a variety of dribble hand-offs and side pick and rolls, which showcased his intriguing skill set. Payton showed a variety of floaters and pull-up jumpers that with his size, will surely translate to the NBA level. Additionally, you were able to see the exceptional bursts of speed that the newly turned 20-year-old has, which have been honed upon with his new teacher.

“Change of speed,” Elfrid immediately shot back when asked what MacLean stressed most. “He’s really big on change of speed and thinks that’s a big thing at the next level.”

As we’ve seen with the best playmakers in the League, MacLean was right. Another aspect of Payton’s game that was showcased throughout the hour and a half session was his ability to shoot the ball. While just a 25 percent three-point shooter last season, he actually shot the ball better from the NBA line. The corners and the top of the key were strong points and Payton himself sees the improvement, but knows that he’s far from a finished product.

“My jumpshot. I just want to get a lot of reps up,” Payton said on what he is looking to improve upon the most. He feels scouts are devaluing the strides that he’s made, stating, “Everybody is entitled to their opinion, so we will see.”

With just over a month and a half until the Draft, Elfrid finds himself firmly supplanted in the first round and with strong workouts, has the potential to crack the lottery. After all, we’re looking at a player who despite finishing three years of college, is younger than some college freshmen. No matter where E finds himself drafted though, he’s carrying over the League.

“By not being on a lot of people’s radars, it just put a bigger chip on my shoulder. I’m glad the way that it happened, and it’s not going to change.”
