Milwaukee Bucks forward Nikola Mirotic has decided to sign a contract with EuroLeague club Barcelona, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. The unrestricted free agent is fresh off an Eastern Conference Finals run with the Milwaukee Bucks.

Mirotic, 28, played in the Liga ACB Spanish league prior to arriving in the NBA with the Chicago Bulls and will now make his return, albeit for a different squad. From 2008 to 2014 Mirotic played for Real Madrid, now he’ll play for Barcelona.

Mirotic averaged 11.6 points and 5.4 rebounds per game in his half-season with Milwaukee and earned $12.5 million over the course of the 2018-19 campaign. He could have earned another hefty pay day in the NBA and, as Marc Stein of the New York Times reports, had suitors in Utah and Dallas.

Terms of Mirotic’s deal with Barcelona are not yet known.

Pelicans forward Nikola Mirotic has inked an endorsement deal with Gillette, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times:

Since shaving his signature beard a few weeks ago, Mirotic is averaging 22.4 points and 10.9 rebounds per contest and New Orleans has gone 9-0!

It was Pelicans coach Alvin Gentry who seemed to get the ball rolling with Gillette. After Mirotic dropped 30 in Game 3 against the Blazers, Gentry told reporters: “Gillette should take all the credit. And I’m giving them a plug so Niko maybe got a sponsorship out of this.”

New Orleans will face the Warriors in the second round of the playoffs – and Mirotic will remain WITHOUT his beard.

Game 1 is Saturday at 10:30pm ET.

The deal is finally done.

Forward Nikola Mirotic is headed from Chicago to New Orleans in a trade for Omer Asik, Tony Allen, Jameer Nelson, and a first-rounder (top-5 protected in 2018), per multiple reports. Allen is expected to be waived.

The Bulls will also give the Pelicans a second-round pick and release forward Quincy Pondexter.

Mirotic is averaging 16.8 points and 6.4 rebounds through 15 outings this season. In recent weeks, he had “stood firm” on a request to be shipped out of Chicago – one initially made back in October following a physical altercation with teammate Bobby Portis at practice.

The Pelicans, currently 27-23, are seemingly sticking to their pledge to “remain active in acquiring talent” ahead of the deadline, despite losing All-Star DeMarcus Cousins for the remainder of the year. Mirotic will help fill the necessary frontcourt gap.

The Salt Lake Tribune has confirmed that Utah is engaged in talks with the Chicago Bulls on a deal that would bring power forward Nikola Mirotic to Utah.

Jazz forward Derrick Favors has been discussed as a potential piece that would go to Chicago, according to multiple sources.

Other reports Tuesday suggest the Bulls want a first round pick as compensation for Mirotic, something they have inquired the Jazz about.

Nothing is done on either side, but talks are past the preliminary stage and getting serious.

According to NBC Sports Chicago’s Vincent Goodwill, Mirotic is willing to waive his no-trade clause, but according to league rules, Chicago can’t trade him until January 15.

Mirotic prefers a trade out of Chicago—which won’t be available to the Bulls until mid-January at the earliest because he was a free agent this summer—and is willing to waive his no-trade clause to do so, sources tell NBCSportsChicago.com.

It’s been described by one source as “one of them has to go” and the Bulls are aware of the tenuous situation.

Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic is reportedly still upset with teammate Bobby Portis after Portis’ punch broke two bones in Mirotic’s face.

According to the Chicago Tribune‘s KC Johnson, Mirotic would find it “difficult” to co-exist with Portis in light of the altercation.

There’s a growing sense that Mirotic would find returning to a locker room with Portis difficult.

In an odd way, the severity of Mirotic’s injuries could help assuage the delicate and fluid situation merely by the passage of time.

Emotions remain raw for now.

Earlier this week, Portis—who the Bulls suspended for 8 games—issued a public apology for his role in the altercation.

Portis said that he’s texted and called Mirotic, “but he didn’t respond.”

Update [October 18]: According to the New York Daily News, the Bulls have suspended Bobby Portis for eight games and Mirotic will miss four to six weeks “with a fractured jaw and a concussion.”

Original Story: Bulls forward Nikola Mirotic left practice on Tuesday with two broken bones in his face after getting punched by teammate Bobby Portis.

According to The Vertical’s Shams Charania, a shoving match during practice ended with a surprise punch from Portis.

Mirotic will likely be “sidelined indefinitely,” and Portis is “almost certain” to be suspended, reports the Chicago Tribune‘s KC Johnson.

One source said Mirotic had two broken bones after Portis connected and could miss up to three weeks. He has since been released from the hospital.

The Bulls said they are evaulating disciplinary action, but Portis is almost certain to draw a suspension.

The Bulls released a statement on Tuesday saying Mirotic suffered a concussion and “maxillary fractures” and that “surgery is likely required.”

Nikola Mirotic and the Chicago Bulls have come to terms on a two-year, $27 million pact.

Mirotic faced an Oct. 1 deadline on a one-year, $7.2 million qualifying offer.

The 26-year-old forward has averaged 10.8 points, 5.3 rebounds and 1.1 assists in three seasons with the Bulls.

Per Yahoo:

Mirotic and the Bulls held extensive discussions this offseason and reached agreement on a shorter-term contract on Sunday. Mirotic was one of the top stretch fours on the market, but fell into a difficult pool of restricted free agency this summer.

Mirotic has the right to veto any trade in the first year of his new Bulls deal, league sources said.

Mirotic had an accomplished professional career with Spain’s Real Madrid before joining the Bulls in 2014 on a three-year contract. He also played for the Spanish national team. Mirotic was selected with the No. 23 overall pick in the 2011 NBA draft.

The post Report: Bulls Shopping Rajon Rondo and Nikola Mirotic appeared first on SLAM.

]]>
The Bulls season got off to a promising start as the team busted out of the gate with three-straight wins. Since then, Chicago has been trending downward and currently sit at 22-23, good enough for the eighth seed in the East.

There has been plenty of drama within the locker room as well. Free agent acquisition Rajon Rondo was benched on December 31 and has played sparingly since, causing a rift between him, the coaching staff and the front office. The result could be a shake up and a report from the Chicago Sun-Times states that Gar Forman and Co. have put both Rondo and Nikola Mirotic on the trade block. Mirotic is averaging a career low 9.3 points per game and is shooting career lows in field goal, 3-point and free throw percentage.

More from the Sun-Times:

According to multiple sources, the Bulls have been shopping guard Rajon Rondo and forward Nikola Mirotic in hopes of bolstering the roster and making a second-half run in the wide-open Eastern Conference.

But one of the sources said neither player is generating the kind of return general manager Gar Forman wants.

‘‘Obviously, you knew that would be the case with Rondo,’’ the source said. ‘‘But [the Bulls] don’t like what they’re hearing back on [Mirotic], either. Then again, that’s a [front office] that tends to overvalue its assets.’

All-Star Jimmy Butler is reportedly frustrated with the way the season has gone, but “uncomfortable about getting involved in front-office issues, especially because of his loyalty to his teammates:”

Butler never has been shy about recruiting other players to the Bulls if it means building a better roster around him, but he’s uncomfortable getting involved in front-office issues, especially because of his loyalty to his teammates. Butler will help bring in new players during an offseason, but he doesn’t want to be the reason they’re packing to go by the trade deadline.

So although sources said Butler has expressed his displeasure with the roster to anyone in the front office who has asked in recent weeks, he’s not the type of guy to name names.

‘‘Jimmy’s attitude is [the front office is] paid to fix it, so fix it,’’ the source said.

While the Bulls have been mostly dreadful on the offensive end this season, Pau Gasol is continuing to have one of his most productive seasons as a pro.

An underrated passer on his career, Gasol is averaging 4.2 dimes this season, good for third on the Bulls. A big man is not supposed to make passes like the one seen above.

The Chicago Bulls announced Tuesday night that forward Nikola Mirotić underwent a hematoma removal over the weekend, this after his appendectomy last week.

Mirotić, 24, was expected to return to the Bulls’ lineup following the NBA All-Star Weekend.

He’s putting up averages of 10.6 points and 5.9 rebounds through 44 games.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

Late Tuesday, the Bulls revealed Mirotic needed a hematoma removal over the weekend and “a date for his return will be re-assessed as he continues to recover.” […] Translated: The wait for Mirotic could be longer than first expected.

A hematoma occurs when blood leaks into areas or pools where it doesn’t belong because of damage to an artery, vein or blood vessel wall. An occurrence after appendectomies isn’t ideal but also is not uncommon.

The Bulls have a history of releasing initial timelines that are more optimistic than realistic. The most public example, of course, followed Derrick Rose’s ACL surgery, which stated Rose was expected to return sometime during the 2012-13 season. Rose actually was cleared to test his body further that season if he felt comfortable doing so but Rose declined.

Mirotić, 24, stayed behind as the Bulls embarked on a trip to Los Angelees.

He’s expected to return to action following the NBA All-Star break.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

Mirotic did not accompany the team on its trip to Los Angeles where it will kick off a seven-game road trip against the Lakers on Thursday night. Mirotic is expected to return after the All Star break in mid-February.

The 24-year-old Mirotic is averaging 10.6 points and 5.9 rebounds per game this season.

The Bulls will now be without Mirotic, Joakim Noah (left shoulder) and Kirk Hinrich (thigh contusion) on the trip and the playing statuses of Derrick Rose (hamstring), E’Twaun Moore (hamstring) and Mike Dunleavy (back) are to be determined.

Chicago Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg recently told the media that Joakim Noah made the suggestion to come off the bench, something the big fella says is not true.

Noah is willing to go with whatever the team feels is best.

Nikola Mirotić has started for the Bulls in the first two games of the young season.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

“I never said I want to come off the bench,” Noah said following Friday’s morning shootaround. “I said I’ll do what’s best for the team.”

The disparate stories first formed when TNT broadcaster Reggie Miller, presumably based off his pregame conversation with his former Pacers’ teammate Fred Hoiberg, casually mentioned during the opening night broadcast that Noah approached Hoiberg and said he wanted to come off the bench. […] That story line gained traction when Grantland.com published an interview with Hoiberg in which, answering a question about how the conversation went when he told Noah he wouldn’t start, the coach again said Noah approached him.

“The truth is I think I’m more effective playing (center) than (power forward). And I think Pau (Gasol) is the same,” Noah said. “And we have two very good (power forwards). So this makes more sense.” […] “I don’t remember; pick whichever one you want,” Hoiberg said. “He came to me and we had a discussion about it. He talked about he really liked playing with Taj (Gibson). And I think Niko and Pau play very well together. I’ll let you figure out if that’s story A or story B. We had a very easy conversation. I give him a lot of credit for initiating that conversation.”

Stepping into a contract year, there are rumblings in Chicago that Joakim Noah could be asked to come off the bench by new Bulls head coach Fred Hoiberg.

Should a full, healthy roster ever materialize in the Windy City, Hoiberg will have to make some very difficult decisions.

Hoiberg reportedly wants to move Nikola Mirotic into the starting lineup, which could leave Noah on the outside looking in.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

Hoiberg started Kirk Hinrich and Jimmy Butler at guard (Monday against the Charlotte Hornets), while Tony Snell surprisingly returned from a one-game absence due to a sprained left ankle to reclaim his starting spot. Joakim Noah and Nikola Mirotic rounded out the lineup. The Bulls have used three in six games. […] (Pau) Gasol and Noah have played together in only one exhibition, Wednesday’s loss to the Pistons. The jumbo lineup featuring Mirotic at small forward played so poorly that Hoiberg ditched it after halftime and shifted Mirotic to power forward and Noah to the bench.

The Tribune previously reported Hoiberg had internal discussions about starting Mirotic at power forward as far back as August. That was before Mike Dunleavy underwent back surgery that will sideline him well into November. […] So it’s conceivable Noah could hang on to a starting role with Mirotic at small forward until Dunleavy returns, although the one-game look didn’t offer much positive proof.

“Coach is going to have a lot of decisions to make in terms of matchups and things like that,” Noah said recently. “Whatever Coach does, I’m cool with it.”

Nikola Mirotic was able to sneak in a poster jam over Giannis Antetokounmpo and his impossibly long arms , and it certainly helped that Giannis was trailing the play.

Antetokounmpo did have a nice block on Pau Gasol, but Spain was able to hold off Greece’s furious rally for a 73-71 win to reach the semifinals of EuroBasket 2015.

This is the ninth year in a row that the Spaniards have reached the tournament’s semis, where they will take on Tony Parker and the French national team.

From the tourney website:

Turning Point: Spain trailed by two points entering the final stanza, but their intent was clear as they attacked the paint, drawing four fouls in the first 59 seconds to put Greece on the back foot. The Greeks only added three points during the opening 6:42 of the final stanza as the momentum changed hands. Fotis Katsikaris’ side hit back late on as Spain began to show signs of nervousness with sloppy turnovers before Pau Gasol missed a late free throw to give Giannis Antetokounmpo a half-court shot at the win, but he was off the mark.

Stats Don’t Lie: Yannis Bourousis was limited to just 9:13 of action before fouling out with more than three minutes remaining and his team trailing by four points. This increased the load on Kostas Koufos (30:41), Georgios Printezis (34:08) and Antetokounmpo (34:10) as they tried to content Spain’s aggressive frontline. Before this game Vassilis Spanoulis was the only Greek player averaging more than 26 minutes before this game.

Game Hero: All the talk before this contest was that the 35-year-old Pau Gasol needed more help from his team-mates if Spain’s run was to continue. Nikola Mirotic stepped up his scoring to 18 points while Victor Claver and Felipe Reyes were tireless in the paint, but again, the Spanish would surely have fallen short were it not for their leader. Gasol finished 27 points and nine rebounds in another assured display.

Chicago Bulls forward Nikola Mirotić was caught on video tearing a Serbian flag following a loss by his Spanish squad during EuroBasket 2015 play.

Mirotić tweeted out an apology for letting his anger get the best of him.

Spain is now 1-2 in pool play.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

Nikola Mirotic took to Twitter on Tuesday to apologize — in three languages no less — for creating a flap at the ongoing EuroBasket tournament. […] Video showed Mirotic, upset after one of Spain’s surprising losses in a 1-2 start, pulling down and inadvertently tearing a Serbian flag that was dropped in his face as he exited a players’ tunnel.

Mirotic, a naturalized citizen of Spain, is a native of Montenegro. He is playing for the Spanish national senior team for the first time.

Former Bull Marco Belinelli’s seven 3-pointers led Italy to a Tuesday victory over Spain, dropping Spain to 1-2 in pool play. The loss ruined a stellar outing by Bulls All-Star Pau Gasol, who posted 34 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in defeat. Mirotic had 13 points and six rebounds off the bench.

Things got chippy at the end of Game 2 between the Bucks and the Bulls. With Chicago well on their way to taking a 2-0 series lead, Bucks center Zaza Pachulia went after Nikola Mirotic twice in a matter of minutes. Pachulia was ejected after elbowing Mirotic in the face in the video seen above, and could be looking at a suspension.

But Mirotic left the game shortly after and his status for Game 3 is uncertain. According to ESPN Chicago, Mirotic has a left quad strain, swollen left knee and a possible concussion:

While it’s unclear when Mirotic injured his knee, he did get caught under a big pile as he and Pachulia grappled on the floor. He was taken out of the game immediately after the scuffle and was looked at by Bulls trainer Jeff Tanaka on the bench. Mirotic headed to the locker room before the final buzzer to get ice and treatment.

“Hopefully it won’t be anything serious,” Bulls big man Pau Gasol said. “I think Zaza had a couple of bad plays, not basketball plays. He got penalized with technicals, but just got to protect players.”

Bulls veteran Mike Dunleavy said he didn’t have a clear view of the incidents, but none of the Bulls seemed surprised by the physical play and intensity of Game 2.

“Obviously the ref saw something on the first one, an elbow or whatever it was,” Dunleavy said. “And then the second one, it was a loose ball on the floor and it’s like a football scrum. You get underneath the pile, who knows what happens? So it was one of those, but I didn’t get a clear look at either one of them.”

Mirotic has been a Rookie of the Year candidate, averaging 10 points and 4.9 rebounds per game. The Bulls are going to need him if they want to make a deep run in the postseason.

The Chicago Bulls’ Nikola Mirotic doesn’t get the minutes that other rookies on bad teams are handed on a silver platter. Thanks to the presence of All-Stars Pau Gasol and Joakim Noah and veteran Taj Gibson, Mirotic has been worked into the rotation more slowly. This has actually been an ideal situation—allowing Mirotic to develop his skills in practice as much as in games. Most young players on bad teams are thrown into the fire.

It’s not that Andrew Wiggins and Nerlens Noel aren’t candidates for the award. Realistically, Wiggins is actually the most likely to receive the Rookie of the Year award because his Minnesota Timberwolves have given him starter’s minutes. But those who vote for the award should take a look at the overall impact on the game in addition to pure scoring output.

Sure, Wiggins is averaging the most points per game in his rookie class, sitting at nearly 16 points per game on the season. And yes, he’s even shown improvement, averaging 17.6 points on 45 percent from the field since the All-Star break. But this has come in 36 minutes per game, which wouldn’t be a negative in most situations, but should make a difference when it comes to rookie awards. Rookies don’t choose which team they play for, and can only make an impact in the minutes they are given.

In the month of March, finally receiving minutes, Mirotic has averaged 31.4 minutes per game, still far less than Wiggins’ minutes average. In those 31 minutes, he has averaged 21 points, 8.2 rebounds and 1.3 blocks per game. All-Star numbers. It’s too long of a stretch to disregard, especially considering that Mirotic wasn’t given those minutes earlier in the season. These peripherals should matter when it comes to rookies. Who is having the most impact for his team? Who has passed the eye test the best? Who has improved the most over the course of the season? Who has played the best in the minutes they have been given?

nikola_mirotic_1

These are rookies we are talking about, and more thought should go into the award due to the fluid nature of a rookie’s game in general, and the uniquity of each team/player relationship. Fantasy owners wouldn’t be wise to choose Wiggins over Mirotic moving forward. They also shouldn’t pick him over Noel just because he’s a scorer.

Wiggins, despite a good season, should not get the award just because he has put up the most points over the most minutes. Wiggins has not played to the level that Mirotic has played, pure and simple. He has been the most consistent rookie, but it’s not like fantasy owners have been yelling from the rooftops in praise of his one-trick-pony stat lines. It’s not a consistent rookie of the year award. While Mirotic’s season averages will probably finish around 10-11 points and 5-6 rebounds per game, his impact has been far greater. Fantasy owners wouldn’t go with many power forwards over Mirotic at this point, and it’s not because his beard is rivaled only by James Harden. It’s a long NBA season, after all, and there are developments over the course of that time.

If Mirotic isn’t the most impactful rookie of the fantasy season, then the Sixers’ Noel is still a better choice than Wiggins, especially as the fantasy playoffs have neared. Since the All-Star break, Noel is averaging 2.5 blocks and 2.4 steals, to go along with 12.9 points and 9.8 rebounds in just 32 minutes per game. That’s nasty. Noel has certainly had an up-and-down season, but he has improved as the season has gone on and has been by far the best defender in the rookie class. Both Noel and Mirotic are going to explode to a new level next season, and will likely be undervalued in drafts next year, if only slightly.

From a fantasy perspective, Mirotic has been playing at an All-Star level since he’s been getting more court action, and has carried the Bulls’ offense in the absence of All-Star Jimmy Butler and former MVP Derrick Rose. There are few power forwards in fantasy land that have been as dominant as Mirotic has been, which has made him one of the best second-half pickups for those that snagged him off the waiver wire mid-season in redraft leagues.

As the fantasy playoffs near, it’s clear which rookie is the most desired player. Even as Gibson, Butler and Rose return to injury, Mirotic has carved himself out a big role, taking advantage of the opportunities that have come his way. In Butler’s first game back from injury on March 23, Nikola still dropped in 28 points and 8 rebounds, so he should continue to be a hot start in all leagues. Mirotic’s hot streak has also come at a time when the fantasy playoffs have either started or are about to start. In daily leagues, Mirotic has been one of the most valuable plays around. And in keeper leagues, it doesn’t get much better than Mirotic in any format you look at. From a defensive standpoint, a similar thing could be said about Noel.

If you look at a simple per-36 minute comparison of the players, the rookie of the year conversation ends rather quickly. Per 36, Mirotic is averaging 17.7 points, 9.1 rebounds, 2.2 assists, 1.3 blocks, 1.1 steals and 5 free throws made per game. Noel is averaging 11.1 points, 2.2 blocks, 2.1 steals, 1.9 assists and 9.2 rebounds. Wiggins is averaging 15.8 points, 4.3 rebounds, 1.8 assists, 1.1 steals and 3.4 free throws, the “worst” numbers of the three.

To be fair, Wiggins shouldn’t be penalized for putting up stats on a bad team, but under the context of Mirotic (and even Noel) not receiving equal minutes, he should. NBA experts seem resigned to the idea that Wiggins has to win the award. This seems like a superficial choice. Down the stretch, it’s easy to see who the fantasy rookie of the year is, and the statistics support Mirotic for the real award as well—if you look at the right ones.

Quick Bits: Injury Updates

It’s still a mystery whether or not Paul George will return, but Larry Bird seems to be in favor and George is close to being ready to go. He could play a bigger role in the final two weeks than people realize if he returns. Derrick Rose is close to taking contact in practice, which would mean a return is imminent. If he’s on the waiver wire in your league, don’t be afraid to pick him up if you have a spot, as he should return to form immediately based on the nature of the meniscus surgery. Dwight Howard has been out for a while, but it seems as though he will finally be back this week. He’s said that he feels better than he has all season which could bode well for his owners.

Kevin Durant isn’t going to have an impact on any more fantasy teams this year, though there is an outside chance he returns at some point in the Playoffs. The problem is that the Thunder are lined up to face the Warriors in the first round, and Durant might not be ready by then. Anthony Davis has been in and out of the lineup on occasion this season, but he has played at an MVP level when he has played. You can only cross your fingers and hope he stays in the lineup if he’s on your fantasy roster. The Wolves’ Nikola Pekovic looks like he might finally be done for the season, after a short stretch of decent statistical output. Hopefully he returns stronger next season.

Off a feed from Pau Gasol, Nikola Mirotic punched a jam in Jason Maxiell’s grill Monday night in the Chicago Bulls’ 98-86 win against the visiting Charlotte Hornets.

The victory clinched a Playoff seed for Da Bulls, and Mirotic scored 14 of his team-high 28 points in the final stanza.

Jimmy Butler rejoined the lineup following an 11-game absence due to a left elbow injury, scoring 19 points and grabbing nine rebounds in 39 minutes of action.

Per the Chicago Tribune:

With two answers, one short and one strong, Joakim Noah summarized the state of the Bulls, who clinched their seventh straight playoff berth Monday with a 98-86 victory over the Hornets. […] “No,” Noah said, when asked if the Bulls’ defense is where it needs to be.

Expanding on why, Noah cited a need for more toughness. And then he dropped the kicker. […] “I still think we’re the toughest team to beat in a seven-game series,” he said.

The game also featured another strong finish from Nikola Mirotic, who scored 14 of his 28 points in the fourth quarter. […] “Dude can play,” Butler said. “He has basically carried us this month.”

Rockets 110 (47-23), Pacers 100 (30-40)

James Harden, tho. In his and the Rockets’ visit to Indiana last night, the MVP candidate went off for 44 points (19 in the fourth quarter). It was his eighth 40+ point game this season.

Josh Smith added 18 off the bench, and Donatas Motiejunas contributed 17. Houston headed into the locker room up 53-39 at the half. They led by as many as 21 points during the game, and the Pacers never caught up. CJ Watson was the high-scorer for the home team, with 23 points off the bench. Roy Hibbert added 18 points and 10 rebounds, and Solomon Hill did this:

Celtics 110 (31-39), Nets 91 (29-40)

In the Atlantic Division match-up last night, Evan Turner and the Boston Celtics would come out on top in Brooklyn. The Cs had a 5-point lead at the half, and they extended that lead in the second half. Turner finished with a 19-point, 12-assist, 10-rebound triple-double for the men on the road.

Five addition Celtics contributed double-figures in the win, which was more than enough to put away the Nets, despite Brook Lopez’s game-high 31 points and Deron Williams’ fancy crossovers.

Grizzlies 103 (50-21), Knicks 82 (14-57)

With their win over the New York Knicks last night at Madison Square Garden, the Memphis Grizzlies officially secured their Playoffs spot. After trailing by 10 at the end of the first quarter, the Knicks managed to cut the deficit to 2 by halftime and even take the lead at the start of the third. But the tables quickly turned as the Grizz held the home team to just 13 points in the third, outscoring them by 11 for a 13-point advantage heading into the fourth. Zach Randolph led all players with 23 points, 7 boards, and 5 assists. Marc Gasol added 21 points and 8 boards in the win. Langston Galloway led the Knicks with 19 points and 7 rebounds in the loss.

Bulls 98 (43-29), Hornets 86 (30-39)

The Chicago Bulls also clinched a Playoffs spot last night when they played host to the Charlotte Hornets. Rookie Nikola Mirotic led his team with 28 points, with 14 in the fourth to get the Bulls a win. It was a 4-point game with just under four minutes to play in the game when Mirotic hit a 3-pointer, a slam (see it below), and a layup plus the foul.

At the end of his single-handed 8-0 run, there was 1:18 left on the clock and the Bulls had a 12-point advantage. They never looked back.

Timberwolves 106 (16-54), Jazz 104 (31-39) OT

The close game between the Timberwolves and Jazz in Utah last night went to overtime, thanks to a couple 3-balls from Zach LaVine in the final 25 seconds of regulation. This was the latter to tie the game at 96:

LaVine finished with a game-high 27 points to lift his T-Wolves over the Jazz on the road. He’s not just a dunk champ, people. Every other Minnesota player who saw minutes contributed double-figs except one (Adreian Payne…the guy had 8 points and 9 boards though, so you know). The Wolves pulled away in OT for the win, despite double-doubles from Rudy Gobert (18 points and 17 rebounds) and Derrick Favors (19 points and 12 rebounds).

Warriors 107 (57-13), Wizards 76 (40-31)

Things were looking good in the first two quarters of last night’s match-up between the Wizards and Warriors at the Oracle Arena. Only 3 points separated the two competitors at halftime. But um…the #3rdQofDoom was a real thing for Washington. The Warriors held their guests to a mere 8 points in the third quarter as they exploded for 29. That was game. Stephen Curry finished with a game-high 24 points and 6 assists.

Magic 111 (22-49), Blazers 104 (44-23)

Elfrid Payton (22 points, 10 assists, 10 rebounds, 4 steals, 1 turnover, 10-13 from the field) made a statement Friday night with his second straight triple-double while shooting efficiently the entire night. He is the first rookie since Antoine Walker (1996-97) to post back-to-back triple doubles. Payton’s herky-jerky rhythm of play keeps opponents on their heels, and Damian Lillard (18 points, 4 assists, 4 rebounds) and the Blazers frontcourt had no answers for the crafty rookie. This is a prime example of what the team lost when Wes Matthews went down for the season. Even though Arron Afflalo (7 points, 3 rebounds) is serviceable, he simply can’t bring the type of hard-nose defense that “Iron Man” does on a nightly basis. Payton got plenty of help from Victor Oladipo (22 points, 8 rebounds) and Nikola Vucevic (22 points, 8 rebounds), as these three combined to score 22 points each. The Blazers let this one slip away in the fourth quarter. Even though Aldridge (31 points, 10 rebounds) finished with a game-high 31 points, he only scored five in the final quarter while the Magic outscored the Blazers 36-23. With the Blazers, Rockets, Clippers and Mavs all right around the same place in the standings, this is a bad game for Portland to let slip by. The Blazers have now lost three games in a row.

76ers 97 (17-52), Knicks 81 (14-55)

Nerlens Noel (career-high 23 points, 14 rebounds, 5 steals, 3 blocks) has really started to turn a corner as the season is coming to a close. He racks up the blocks, steals, rebounds and points to some degree almost every time he steps onto the floor. Friday night, Noel stepped up his offensive game, finding his touch in the paint and making his free throws. Whenever Joel Embiid finally gets back to full health, these two are going to cause major problems in the paint. Even though the Knicks only managed to put up 81 points, Alexey Shved (25 points, 7-8 on 3-pointers) had another strong performance. Not only has Shved scored in double figures in 13 of the past 14 games, Philly’s guard has reached the 20-point plateau in three straight games. His team, though, only managed to shoot 36.2 percent from the field and scored 33 total points in the second half. With the loss, the Knicks fall to a League-worse 14-55.

Nets 129 (28-39), Bucks 127 (34-35) 3OT

The Nets kept their playoff hopes alive thanks to a thrilling triple-overtime victory over the reeling Bucks. Even though Brooklyn has had one of the most inconsistent seasons in the League, Friday night’s game showcased what the Nets thought this franchise would turn into for years to come. Brook Lopez (32 points, season-high 18 rebounds) dominated the paint and finally used his size to his advantage in gobbling up the boards. While Lopez controlled the interior, Joe Johnson (20 points, 7 assists, 6 rebounds, 4-6 on 3-pointers) came through in the clutch as he has so often done in his career. Not only did Johnson drill the game-tying 3-pointer with just over a minute left in regulation to send this game to one overtime, but the veteran guard also knocked down another trey with 18.1 seconds remaining in the second overtime to send this game into the third and final overtime. Lopez then scored the first five points of the third overtime and the Nets wouldn’t give up the lead the rest of the way. Thaddeus Young (24 points, 5 rebounds, 3-5 on 3-pointers) had one of his best games as a Net, bringing a certain level of scrappiness this team needs. With Khris Middleton (29 points, 8 rebounds, 6 assists, 3 steals) continuing to play lights out, all five Bucks starters reached double-digits and all played relatively well. Zaza Pachulia (22 points, 21 rebounds, 7 assists) had a monster 20-20 game, including 18 offensive boards. He really asserted himself on both ends of the floor and helped keep his team in the game. He played a key role in the Bucks obliterating the Nets on the boards as they outrebounding them 81-53. However, in a game in which their team scored 127 points, Milwaukee’s bench only managed to scored a measly 14 points. The Nets bench poured in 49 points with Bojan Bogdanovic (17 points, 5 assists) playing 48 minutes. The Bucks are now below .500 for the first time since they were 15-16 on December 27. They have gone 3-13 in their last 16 games.

Cavaliers 95 (45-26), Pacers 92 (30-38)

With LeBron James (29 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists) leading the way—even with a cold—Cleveland used a balanced attack to sneak by the pesky Pacers. Kevin Love (11 points, 13 rebounds) didn’t have a huge offensive night, but the Cavs power forward finished with a game-high 13 rebounds. Luis Scola (14 points, 11 rebounds) came close as he earned a double-double. George Hill (24 points, 4-8 on 3-pointers) and Roy Hibbert (20 points, 8 rebounds) tried to carry the entire Indiana offense all on their own, but they didn’t get the support they needed down the stretch. Trailing 93-92 with 2:03 left in the game, the Pacers had six chances to take the lead against the Cavs…and missed six consecutive shots. After J.R. Smith (11 points) knocked down two free throws, C.J. Miles (8 points) missed a 3-point attempt to make it seven straight missed shots. The Cavs are getting closer and closer to clinching the No. 2 seed in the East.

Heat 108 (32-36), Nuggets 91 (26-44)

The Nuggets came out of the gate firing, but the Heat finished off strong to remain in the No. 7 seed in the East. Wilson Chandler (13 points, 7 rebounds) scored eight of the team’s first 21 points as Denver built up a 10-point lead in the first seven minutes of the game. However, the Heat came storming back in the second quarter behind Dwyane Wade (22 points, 4 assists) and Michael Beasley (9 points, 8 rebounds, 7 assists, 3 steals). Miami outscored Denver 37-23 in the second quarter. While Wade has been on a tear of late, Beasley was surprisingly valuable in many ways Friday night, having one of his most balanced games of the season. Hassan Whiteside (14 points, 10 rebounds, 2 blocks, 2 steals) controlled the interior against the undersized Nuggets backcourt. Miami outrebounded Denver 44-35. Even though all five Nuggets starters scored in double-digits, their bench provided no support as they only scored 16 points compared to the Heat’s 33 bench points.

Bulls 108 (42-28), Raptors 92 (41-28)

The Bulls big men controlled this game as the Lowry-less Raptors continued to slide down the East standings. Nikola Mirotic (29 points, 11 rebounds, 4 blocks) stepped up yet again for the Bulls, becoming a bad matchup for the Raptors frontline as the game moved on. He only hit 3-11 from deep but really stretched the floor with his shooting and ball handling. Mirotic entered this game averaging 20.8 ppg and 8.2 rpg in the month of March. Even though Joakim Noah (8 points, 14 assists, 10 rebounds) might not have had much of an impact scoring-wise, Chicago’s center had a double-double in rebounds and assists while distributing the ball effectively from the elbow. Jonas Valanciunas (5 points, 6 rebounds) was limited to 24 minutes while Patrick Patterson (17 points, 3-5 on 3-pointers) was decent off the bench. DeMar DeRozan (27 points, 7 rebounds) led the Raptors in scoring, but Chicago slowly wore down Toronto during the first three quarters in building up a 86-68 lead going into the final quarter. The Raptors only shot 38.0 percent from the field while the Bulls shot 53.2 percent. Chicago has now passed Toronto by half a game for the No. 3 seed in the East.

Thunder 123 (39-30), Hawks 115 (53-16)

Just another Thunder game and another triple-double for Russell Westbrook (36 points, 14 assists, 10 rebounds, 17-17 on free throws), who can’t seem to come back down to Earth since this recent surge of out-of-this-world play. This was Westbrook’s seventh triple-double since the All-Star break and 17th of his career. Not only did he post the impressive line, Westbrook also came through yet again when the game was on the line. Going into the fourth quarter, OKC trailed 95-90 as bench players Paul Millsap (19 points, 4 steals), Dennis Schroder (21 points, 3-5 on 3-pointers) and Pero Antic (22 points, 4-6 on 3-pointers) combined to score 54 points through three quarters. (However, these three only managed to score eight points in the final 12 minutes.) Westbrook then took the game over in the fourth as he scored or assisted on 26 of his team’s 33 points. The Hawks only managed 20 points in the quarter, falling behind by double-digits at the hand of Russ. Guards Dion Waiters (season-high 26 points, 11-18 from the field) and Anthony Morrow (21 points, 6-10 on 3-pointers) found their stroke, especially Morrow. When the 3-point specialist can start knocking down treys, it helps opens up the floor for Westbrook.

Grizzlies 112 (48-21), Mavericks 101 (44-26)

The Mavs hung around as long as they could before the Grizzlies blew this game wide open. After Rajon Rondo (10 points, 6 rebounds, 4 assists) hit a turnaround bank shot with 8:11 left in the the third quarter, the Mavs only trailed 56-44. However, with Zach Randolph (21 points, 5 assists) and Marc Gasol (15 points, 10 rebounds) leading the way, Memphis went on a quick 16-4 run to put this game out of reach for good. Tyson Chandler (9 points, 13 rebounds, 3 blocks) does so many good things for Dallas on the defensive end of the floor. However, when he goes to the bench and Dirk Nowitzki (16 points, 6 rebounds), Amare Stoudemire (4 points, 4 rebounds) and Charlie Villanueva (12 points) have to start protecting the pair and going after boards, the Mavs simply become soft down low. And Friday, the entire defense fell apart in a third quarter in which they allowed the Grizzlies to score 39 points—after they only scored 44 points in the first half. Mike Conley (14 points, 3 assists) played well in his return to the starting lineup after missing four games. While the Grizzlies shot 53.2 percent from the field, Nowitzki, Monta Ellis (12 points, 2 assists) and Chandler Parsons (12 points, 5 rebounds) combined to shoot 11-34 (32.4 percent) from the field. As promising as the Mavs’ last three wins of their five-game home stand have been, their finish Friday night washed away many of the positives. Dallas has now fallen to the seven seen in the West.

Spurs 101 (43-25), Celtics 89 (30-38)

Tim Duncan (10 points, 6 rebounds) established himself early while Kawhi Leonard (22 points, 7 rebounds, 3 steals) and Tony Parker (15 points, 7 assists) pulled through in the end as the Spurs picked up the wire-to-wire win at the AT&T Center. Duncan had two steals and a two-handed flush in the first three minutes as San Antonio jumped out to a quick 10-2 lead. When Duncan can assert himself right out of the gate, it puts a certain amount of energy in all of his teammates. Since the Spurs really started to turn their season around though, Leonard and Parker have been the main reasons for their success. These two helped the Spurs build up a 25-point second half lead that turned out to look much better due to a 16-0 run in the fourth quarter. However, once Popovich put Leonard and Parker back in the game, the Spurs regained control. Evan Turner (17 points, 4 assists) and Avery Bradley (16 points) led the way for Boston as Jae Crowder (14 points, 6 rebounds) gave the Celtics a boost off the bench. Marcus Smart (10 points, 4 assists) showed some immaturity issues during his time at Oklahoma State and they might have reappeared Friday night when he received a flagrant 2 for punching Matt Bonner in the lower area. Hopefully this was a one-time incident for the rookie guard.

Kings 101 (23-45), Hornets 91 (29-38)

Aside from Derrick Williams (13 points) having one of the most powerful dunks of the season, the Kings played one of their most complete games of late thanks to a big time performance from Rudy Gay (33 points, 9 rebounds, 2 steals). From time to time, Gay can really take over a game with his all-around offensive skills. He can shoot it from deep, pull up from midrange and get into the paint. He nailed a pair of threes and made 9-10 free throws Friday night. His biggest shot of the night came in the form of an and-one when he extended Sacramento’s lead from seven points to 87-77 midway through the fourth quarter. The Hornets would get no closer than six the rest of the way. Even though Gerald Henderson (20 points, 5 rebounds) had an efficient night in leading his team in scoring, the Hornets had an awful shooting performance. If you take away Henderson’s and Michael Kidd-Gilchrist’s (13 points, 7 rebounds) 13-25 (52 percent) shooting from the field, Charlotte only managed to shoot 23-66 (34.8 percent). If the Hornets want to squeeze into the playoffs, they can’t put up offensive duds like this down the stretch.

Warriors 112 (55-13), Pelicans 96 (37-32)

The Warriors had no problem handling the undermanned Pelicans as they built up a 98-71 lead early on in the fourth quarter and cruised to a victory. Harrison Barnes (22 points, 9-13 from the field) continued his recent strong play while Stephen Curry (16 points, 11 assists, 4-17 from the field) notched a double-double despite his poor shooting on the night. This is the first time in Barnes’ career he has scored at least 20 points in back-to-back regular season games. Leandro Barbosa (12 points, 4 assists, +26) really played well in the second unit and clearly had an impact during his 23 minutes on the floor. Even though the Pelicans had six players in double figures with Norris Cole (16 points, 5 rebounds, 4 assists) leading the way off the bench, the lack of Anthony Davis and Omer Asik in the paint made all those points…well, a moot point. They couldn’t contain any of Golden State’s penetration, and that is why the Warriors had a 58-30 advantage in points in the paint. The League’s best team record-wise is now four wins away from their franchise record.

Clippers 113 (45-25), Wizards 99 (40-29)

For all the MVP-buzz Stephen Curry, James Harden, LeBron James, Russell Westbrook and Anthony Davis have been getting, Chris Paul (30 points, 15 assists, 6 rebounds, 1 turnover) should at least be given legitimate consideration with the way he carried this team when Blake Griffin (22 points, 6 rebounds, 5 assists) was out and continues to dominate down the stretch. Paul just seems in complete control of his game and Doc River’s offense right now, seemingly making all the right shots and passes. However, LA’s defense is what turned this game into a double-digit victory. The Clippers held the Wizards to only two baskets during the final 6:54 of the game, shutting down guards John Wall (19 points, 10 assists) and Bradley Beal (18 points, 3-5 on 3-pointers). Again, Paul’s pesky perimeter defense played a large part in containing Washington’s backcourt. DeAndre Jordan (10 points, 23 rebounds, 3 blocks, 2 steals) also does a fantastic job limiting opponents to just one shot per possession with the way he gobbles up rebounds. He may not be one of the stars on the team, but J.J. Redick (26 points, 4-7 on 3-pointers) has been on an absolute tear for the past few weeks. The Clippers go to him early and often as they are trying to open up the floor from the moment the ball is tipped. Redick nailed two 3-pointers before three minutes had even passed in this game. Winners of their last three games and on the rise, Los Angeles seems to be in a great groove right now.

It wasn’t long ago that Russell Westbrook was viewed as a second fiddle to scoring champion and MVP Kevin Durant.

With Durant sidelined for a good portion of this season’s schedule thus far, Westbrook has seized the opportunity to show every single NBA fan that he is capable of being the man. His detractors have at times called him selfish, with a questionable at best shot selection.

Westbrook seems to thrive living by the old motto, “You miss 100 percent of the shots you don’t take,” and he is certainly proving that he should have the green light to play that way. With his own line of stylish eyeglasses and a fiery competitive spirit, Westbrook is certainly one of the most unique personalities in the League.

Props to Stephen Curry and James Harden for phenomenal seasons, but Westbrook is the better all-around player and athlete, and is without a doubt the best fantasy player at the guard position. With averages of 27 points, 8 assists, 7 rebounds, and 2 steals per game, he is at the very least the fantasy MVP.

He is a guy who “disappoints” his fantasy owners when he can’t put up a fourth straight triple-double. In other words, Russ is simply as reliable as it gets. True, he is shooting only 27 percent from three this year, but over the course of the last four seasons that number sits at a respectable enough 32 percent. That’s about the biggest complaint you’ll find.

Over his last four games, Westbrook is averaging an absurd 42.8 points, 12.8 boards, 9.8 assists and 2.3 steals per game, simply carrying the Thunder on his shoulders and up the standings in the Western Conference, simultaneously giving his fantasy owners a nasty overabundance of confidence.

Those same owners are likely hoping for KD to remain out of the lineup for as long as possible, but even when he returns, this might just be Westbrook’s team for this 2015 title run, as he approaches a season record usage rate.

You’d be hard pressed to find a similar stretch of dominant play since the advent of fantasy basketball. The leap that Westbrook has made this year can no doubt be attributed to the previously mentioned absence of Durant. Before last season’s injury shortened affair, Westbrook had two straight seasons where he averaged about 23 points on about 19 shot attempts in 35 minutes per game.

This season, in 33 minutes per game, he is averaging that 27 point total on 21 shots. The numbers imply that Westbrook has learned to be a more efficient player while remaining a dominant force. Consider also the giant leap in assists and rebounds per game. He’s gone from 5.5 assists per game in 2011-12 to 8.2 per game this year, while averaging by far a career high in points and usage. He is averaging 1.5 more rebounds per game more than ever before in his career.

Westbrook has evolved his game to the point where he fills in every gap that the Thunder need filled. When Durant comes back, there won’t be as many gaps, but you can expect Westbrook to continue to perform like an MVP. Fantasy owners should keep this is mind if Durant and Westbrook ever part ways from each other or the Thunder. A Championship together this year could keep them a tandem for a long time.

Quick Bits

Kemba Walker will be returning shortly after recovering from his meniscus tear, and he is likely going to see a lot of time next to fellow point guard Mo Williams, who has played well since coming over from Minnesota. Both guys will be fantasy viable and capable of exploding on any given night. Charlotte has struggled for offense most of the year, so the coaching staff is unlikely to sacrifice either Mo’s or Kemba’s minutes in the quest for a playoff spot.

Chicago Bulls rookie Nikola Mirotic has exploded onto the scene since both Derrick Rose and Jimmy Butler were knocked out of the lineup. With both set to miss weeks, not days, Mirotic is the offensive threat that Chicago needs to keep a high seed and some sort of home court advantage on the Eastern Conference. He is averaging 26 points, 8 boards, and 2.5 three pointers over the last three games, and while it’s unreasonable to expect it every night out of the rook, Mirotic is going to play at a top level as long as Butler and Rose are out. This is more than a hot streak and he is a reliable fantasy option.

Anthony Davis returned just in time to warm up for the fantasy playoffs, but hopefully his absence didn’t cost anybody down the stretch. He wasted no time in dropping a 39-point, 13-rebound and 8-block line on his opponents, so his owners can at least be confident moving forward that Davis is fully healthy.

Rudy Gobert, with a 24-rebound performance, and Hassan Whiteside, with a 25-rebound outing last week, are not going to slip by anybody in fantasy drafts next year. Owners who picked these guys up at a low value are reaping the rewards. In keeper leagues, both guys are worth more than you would ever get back in a trade, so keep them in your lineup long term.

The Dwight Howard situation in Houston continues to flummox owners. Terrence Jones is taking advantage of all the extra opportunity right now, and should continue to do so even if Howard is able to return soon. Earlier estimates had Howard being reevaluated sometime in the first week of March, so hopefully the news is good. It’s possible that Howard returns to top form for the fantasy playoffs, something his owners haven’t seen much of the year as he played through knee soreness.

The post Fantasy Basketball: Sell High on Tyson Chandler? appeared first on SLAM.

]]>
The impact Tyson Chandler is having all over the court for the Dallas Mavericks really makes you wonder about what exactly went wrong in New York, because it is almost impossible to believe that a player could be so Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde without any explanation. For whatever reason (reasons), the Knicks situation was toxic, and there’s no getting around it. Leaving the Big Apple has rejuvenated Chandler, who is eclipsing or approaching a career high statistical output across the board, with a stat line of 11.3 points, 11.9 rebounds and 1.5 blocks per game on nearly 70 percent from the field in under 30 minutes per contest. The biggest question lingering on the minds of Chandler’s fantasy owners is whether or not he can keep up his currently outstanding pace. In most formats, he has been a top-25 player thus far.

Chandler is simply a perfect fit in the current Dallas lineup. This being said, he is the definition of a sell-high player at the moment. His value will not get any higher, and owners should be looking to trade him as soon as possible, because the haul that he can currently bring in on the trade market is almost certain to perform better statistically from this point forward. Fantasy basketball is a numbers game after all. Maximizing the overall statistical production of your fantasy lineup is accomplished by reading the tea leaves (or attempting to) and analyzing what kind of performance can be expected moving forward from each individual on your squad. Think about this: Chandler is currently approaching his career high of 12.4 rebounds per game, which he achieved in a full load of over 34 minutes per game with the New Orleans Hornets seven (7!) years ago. If coach Rick Carlisle didn’t trust his bench, it’s reasonable to think that Chandler would be averaging a career high in rebounding (in addition to the scoring and field goal percentage) given equal minutes.

This isn’t to say that Chandler is a fluke—he will continue to be a force for the Mavs. In fact, if you decide to keep him, I wouldn’t go so far as to guarantee that he will be a disappointment from here on out. Will he be a top fantasy performer, though? One major issue is that he hasn’t ever put up equal numbers per minute across the board; he is producing as efficient of a season statistically as he ever has in all categories. Expecting him to keep this up wouldn’t even be fair. Also, given his injury history dating all the way back to his final season with the New Orleans Hornets in 2008 when he only played 45 games, it would be hard to expect Chandler to play 70 games or more.

Even if you want to blame the Knicks for Chandler’s decrease in recent production, you just can’t ignore the 32-year-old’s documented issues with staying on the court and the simple fact that he hasn’t been this good statistically across the board yet in his career. When it comes to the real world though, Dallas looks like they can again contend for a title with Chandler in the lineup. The Mavericks’ decision to bring him back was without a doubt one of the best moves in the entire NBA offseason. Somehow, despite only playing just over one full season with Dallas, it’s hard to picture Chandler in anything but a Mavs jersey.

The 76ers Watch

Well, the wait is over, and the Philadelphia 76ers have avoided an NBA record 18th straight loss to start the season, defeating a Ricky Rubio and Nikola Pekovic free Minnesota Timberwolves squad (they’ll take it) to move to 1-17. Despite the dreadful record, believe it or not the Sixers do actually have players that you would want on your fantasy squad. One interesting development has been the Michael Carter-Williams and Tony Wroten court-share, which has been a battle for the ages—when it comes to fantasy output. First, Wroten benefited heavily early in the season while Carter-Williams continued to recover from his injury, and he was averaging over 20 points and 6 assists.

When Carter-Wiliams returned, Wroten was in possession of the ball a lot less, which immediately impacted his scoring. Now Wroten has missed the last week, and in the three games without him, MCW has looked like a top fantasy point guard for the first time since his rookie of the year campaign ended, averaging a triple-double during that span (20.7 ppg, 10.0 rpg, 10.7 apg, 1.3 spg). Coach Brett Brown needs to find a way to get these two young explosive players in sync, and fantasy owners everywhere would benefit. The Sixers don’t exactly have a lot of scoring, so there is no reason that both can’t put up big numbers if they can adapt to each other. If they can’t, it will be Wroten’s numbers that suffer long term.

Of increasing interest right now is rookie KJ McDaniels, who despite being drafted 32nd in this year’s Draft, has looked like he could be a top-five rookie performer by season’s end. He should be owned in all leagues at this point as the Sixers are certain to give him whatever minutes he can handle. He has played 30 or minutes in four straight games, which will be good for both his development and his stat lines. His scoring should increase from the current 10 ppg, to go along with impressive rebound, block and steal totals for a rookie small forward. Fellow rookie Nerlens Noel has been inconsistent all season, but has shown flashes at times (including a 17-point and 12-rebound performance). Keep in mind that he didn’t play organized basketball for well over a year, and that it will also take time for him to adjust to the NBA game. His blocks and rebounding numbers have nevertheless been disappointing, and while he should be owned for his potential in those categories, he belongs on fantasy benches at this point. He should still be a coveted commodity in all keeper leagues.

Quick Bits

Bulls rookie Nikola Mirotic looks like the real deal, but it’s hard to see him being impactful from a fantasy perspective yet, stuck in a deep frontcourt rotation that includes Joakim Noah, Pau Gasol and Taj Gibson, all much better defenders (Tom Thibodeau just smiled). Victor Oladipo‘s all-around game is starting to reach its potential after a slow start, including a recent 27-point outburst. DeMar DeRozan‘s injury has fantasy owners scrambling and while it is possible he returns in a month, it seems like he could be out longer than that, leaving Lou Williams and Greivis Vasquez as benefactors in the meantime. Dwight Howard‘s knee continues to be a concern for the Rockets, as it seems like the team wants him at 100 percent before he returns to the court. This plan worked well for Dwyane Wade, who looks to have returned to star form for the Heat after a hamstring injury. Ty Lawson also appears to have overcome his injury concerns, eclipsing top-10 point guard value and almost singlehandedly leading the Denver Nuggets back into the Western Conference playoff race.

Much like Toni Kukoc over 20 years before him, Nikola Mirotic is a European prospect who was coveted by Bulls management and frequently discussed by fans.

There are plenty of unanswered questions about Mirotic’s game, but on the surface it appears that the kid can play. In five seasons with Real Madrid, Mirotic averaged 10.8 points per game and 4.5 rebounds. Those numbers don’t exactly jump out at you but when you factor in that he shot 49 percent from the field as a jump shooter, you know exactly why GM Gar Forman wanted Mirotic to join the offensively challenged Bulls so badly.

Mirotic won multiple championships in Spain in addition to being named the Euroleague Rising Star in back-to-back seasons. The Montenegrin was also named the MVP of the Spanish League in 2013 and the Spanish King’s Cup MVP in 2014.

“What we feel we’re getting in Nikola is a guy that’s a real fit,” Gar Forman said. “He’s a big that’s really skilled. He’s a spacing 4 that shoots the three very well. He’s versatile and can play inside and outside. He’s got a high basketball IQ. He’s got a motor. He’s got the type of makeup and character that we look for in players.”

SLAM spoke to the Bulls rookie-to-be about why he left Real Madrid, the prospect of playing with former All-Stars Derrick Rose and Pau Gasol, and his goals for his first season in the NBA.

SLAM: How does it feel to finally be in Chicago?

Nikola Mirotic: I’m excited to be here, to be part of this great historical team. Finally I’m here. This is my first time to be in Chicago so to see every paper journalist here for me is a great feeling. I’m happy to be here and I want to start the preseason to do my job and my job is to play and work hard.

SLAM: What led to your decision to leave Real Madrid?

NM: I think it’s a perfect time and moment to do one step is this year. I think that I can improve more things here in Chicago. I did a lot of things in Madrid. I won five titles so now I think it’s the moment to do the great job in Chicago. I think it’s a perfect group for me to improve and learn a lot of things, so I’m excited to be here.

SLAM: How does your game fit with Derrick Rose?

NM: For me it’s a big pleasure to play with him, Noah, and somebody with experience like Pau Gasol. I think I can adapt good on the team. I think I can help them to play better and to open the court. I’m young so I know I have a lot of things to improve, especially my body. So I think we can do a great season, just we need to start good. I’m happy and I want to meet my new teammates, I’m in a great city, so I’m happy.

SLAM: Is strength something you need to improve on most?

NM: Maybe, yes. I think I’m a smart player. I like to create a lot for the team but I know that I need to be strong, especially mentally. I know that I have to do a lot of things to improve, but I’m ready. I know that my coach and my teammates will help me, but it’s important to do the job step by step. I’m ready and I want to help them.

SLAM: What’s the best part of your game?

NM: I tell you before that I like to create for the team. I like to put the ball on the floor. I like to run the court. I like to play pick and pop to the three-point line. This is the strongest thing in my game. Sure, I know that Chicago is a great defensive team so I need to help them in the defense. I need to improve so I think that I can help them a lot.

SLAM: Are you prepared to come off the bench?

NM: I don’t know. It depends. It depends how coach wants to use me. I’m ready to accept my role on the team. In Madrid I’m always starter. For sure this is different. This is NBA. I don’t care if I start or don’t start. I have to do my job and I play, so that’s it.

SLAM: What have your conversations with Pau been like so far?

NM: I meet him yesterday. I think he can help me a lot in the beginning. He’s a player with a lot of experience. I think I can help a lot with this team. I’m happy to be here with Pau Gasol. I think for both it’s good—happy for this.

SLAM: What’s your goal for your rookie season?

NM: To be best player every day. To improve myself. To help the team win a lot of games with shooting—that’s it. I think that everybody needs to think how we can help the team to play better, so I’m just thinking this and I’m ready for this new challenge.
