While Cassius Stanley would describe his style once as “conservative” the shooting guard recently admitted on the first episode of ‘Catch My Thrift’ that he does like to take risks when it comes to putting together a fit.

“I honestly credit A$AP Rocky for majority of my fashion things,” Stanley told LeagueFits. “When he dropped the song, when I was about thirteen, [in] the LONG.LIVE.A$AP album, it’s called “Fashion Killa,” it’s kind of where I started figuring out a lot of crazy brands because he name dropped every brand. It’s a great song.”

‘Catch My Thrift’ is a brand new series by SLAM in which players around the L go thrift shopping with LeagueFits and candidly share their thoughts on their personal style, game day fits and more.

If you know, you know that Stanley’s fits, which include rockin’ a pair of vans and donning a crewneck by NAHMIAS, are often featured on LeagueFits’ Instagram feed—a testament to how his style has evolved since his time as a Blue Devil at Duke wearing only a “Duke shirt and Duke shorts” around campus (those are his words, not ours).

During NBA Summer League, Stanley went thrift shopping with LF and found some pieces that beyond just the vintage tees.

LeagueFits, a social media account run by creative producer Ian Pierno, sits at the intersection of the basketball world and the fashion world by capturing style all across the NBA and WNBA. ‘Catch My Thrift’ is the latest content series by LeagueFits, which also includes a podcast, ‘Survival of the Fitted’

The show, hosted by Pierno and intern Joe Williams, features conversations with some of the most fashionable athletes, designers, stylists, and influencers in the game, from JJ Redick to DiJonai Carrington. Stream ‘Survival of the Fitted’ here.

Who’s most likely to have their own reality TV show? Wear tech fleece on a first date? Get catfished? Slide in a celebrity’s DMs? How about biggest clout chaser?

Most hops? They all pointed to a certain someone.

Finally, poor CJ Walker was ruthlessly trolled for not only never washing his jersey, but not even wearing deodorant.

Cassius Stanley finds himself at a crossroads one morning before a team shootaround. The 6-5, five-star senior shooting guard is sitting down near his locker for an interview and is having trouble deciding how to answer.

What’s your response to those who say you guys can’t do it again?

After asking for the question to be repeated, he pauses before he finally gives an answer.

“We’re just going to do it,” Stanley says. “For the people who say we can’t do it again, you’ll see the show.”

Last season’s talk around California high school hoops was about all the transfers who enrolled in Sierra Canyon School, a prestigious private Pre-K-12 college preparatory in Chatsworth. Located on the outskirts of Los Angeles in the San Fernando Valley, Sierra Canyon has a reputation for being a school attended by children of A-list celebrities.

Stanley, son of Jerome Stanley, the first black sports agent to represent a No. 1 pick in the NFL Draft, transferred to Sierra Canyon from Harvard-Westlake for his junior year. Scotty Pippen Jr, whose father needs no introduction, made the cross-country trek from Pine Crest (FL) HS. Kenyon Martin Jr, ditto, enrolled from nearby Chaminade. In total, there were six transfers and a head coaching change at the school.

At a time when superteams are now the norm in the NBA, Sierra Canyon has followed suit, putting together a big-name-heavy team that was both glorified and scrutinized for its newly formed roster. Some had the squad as favorites to win it all; others prayed for their downfall.

“We were a bunch of individuals and that was a big thing throughout the year,” says Stanley. “Everyone knew us—but as a team it was a big question mark.”

In the first 10 games of last season, the Trailblazers went 9-1. A three-point loss to Bishop Montgomery in January had many questioning Sierra Canyon’s validity after falling to a team that was missing three key starters. As the season progressed, Sierra Canyon went undefeated in league play to capture another Gold Coast title and began the postseason in the CIF-SS Open Division 1A playoffs, which is regarded as one of the toughest divisions in interscholastic sports.

And as the horn sounded and the game clock read all zeros inside the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento last March, the Trailblazers celebrated everything doubters said they couldn’t do as they hoisted the CIF-SS Open Division State title to conclude a memorable 27-4 season.

Stanley led all scorers with 23 points while Pippen Jr added 21 as Scottie stood courtside, ecstatic of what his son had accomplished. Andre Chevalier, an assistant coach who took over the reins after former coach Ty Nichols resigned, credits last season to making him an overall better person, but, most importantly, a better coach.

“It was a great learning opportunity for me,” Chevalier says. “I became better as a coach as a result of having to coach these guys, and as they came together as a group throughout the year, we began to see that it was going to be a special run.”

Chevalier, who hails from Maryland, relocated to Southern California with his mother in middle school. He starred at Cleveland HS in Reseda before earning a scholarship to Cal State Northridge, where he was the Matadors’ point guard in the early ’90s. He has the second-most assists (481) in school history and was inducted into the Matador Hall of Fame in 2016. Now the 2018 L.A. Times Coach of the Year is at the helm for one of the most high-profile basketball teams in the nation in a digital age where almost all grassroots hoops fans who own a cell phone have chimed in about his team.

“I just stay silent because our actions will speak louder than words,” Chevalier says. “Never do I have to respond to anything. We work to accomplish our goals.”

“I really don’t feel that much pressure,” says Kenyon Martin Jr, who prefers to be called KJ. “Growing up and seeing [my dad] play and just seeing how the guys are and what they do at that level, it gives me expectations for the future, so I follow the steps.”

Having a father who was a former No. 1 NBA Draft pick and made a career off playing with tenacity for 15 years in the League has given the younger Martin an appreciation for the type of work that needs to be done to reach that level.

“Coming in every day—even if you don’t play well—just play hard,” KJ says, reflecting on his dad’s advice. “No one can teach you how hard to play. [My dad] just tells me to go out and play hard.”

This season, KJ continues to do that. At 6-6, the power forward’s motor is a clear indication that he’s from the Martin bloodline. He hovers from the short corner to each block for any openings to receive passes off penetration from his teammates. In the Trailblazers’ 2-2-1 full-court press, where the team goes from defense to offense in a matter of seconds, KJ surveys the court like a safety on a football field, looking to intercept anything in his vicinity.

When he gets a steal, he dribbles en route to the basket with a full head of steam or advances it to his teammates as he trails for the alley-oop or cleans anything around the rim. And on defense, he patrols the paint, usually swatting shots a few rows into the bleachers.

Martin Sr, who’s normally sitting in the front row at home games, is perpetually present to offer his son on-the-fly advice on the intricacies of the game or later in detail during film sessions, where missed assignments and late rotations (and not huge dunks) are the focal points.

For Pippen Jr, there can be two types of pressure—being the point guard on a top team and bearing the surname of a six-time NBA champion and Hall of Famer.

“I feel like being the point guard for one of the top teams in the nation and [being] Scottie Pippen’s son comes with a lot of pressure,” says Pippen Jr. “Everybody wants to know who I am and how do I perform night in and night out.”

The 6-2 guard is the engine of the Trailblazers’ high-powered offense. As a facilitator, playing with guys like Cassius and KJ makes his job much easier. Many times, Pippen Jr can call his own number and break down defenders straight to the rim, but he usually likes to connect with the aforementioned pair on plays that cause raucous cheers throughout the gym and inevitably end up on social media.

“I still get shocked at times because this only happens once,” says Stanley, a viral sensation who has amassed over 360,000 followers on Instagram. “I get hyped every time I see something, whether it’s me, my teammates and seeing who comes to the games, because this is high school basketball.”

Despite their short time together, the trio plays as if they’ve known each other since childhood.

“Their off-the-court camaraderie is amazing,” Chevalier says. “They hang out with each other, love each other, fight as brothers. That transitions to the on-the-court camaraderie that helps us win games.”

The Trailblazers are 30-3 and attract flocks of fans from all over whenever they hit the court. Their games are typically standing room only, and home games are streamed live online. Plus, the status of fans coming to see the most electrifying HS team West of the Mississippi can vary on any given night. Aside from Pippen Sr and Martin Sr, who are regulars, Kanye West and multiple Kardashian/Jenners have made appearances over the last year.

Stanley has his top-5 list—Barack Obama, Travis Scott, Drake, LeBron James and Kobe Bryant—of stars he’d like to come through this season. As of this writing, James, Kendall Jenner and close friend Taco (of Odd Future fame) have been some of the big names to make an appearance.

It’s the Wednesday morning before Thanksgiving break and the triumvirate plus Chevalier are filtering through the locker room for interviews for a docu-series that’s scheduled to air in the coming months. Shortly after, the Trailblazers go through a team shootaround, a game day ritual, before they pose for SLAM photos throughout campus.

About six hours after our shoot, Sierra Canyon hosts Hollywood HS and completely obliterates them, 105-28. Stanley, who throws down an insane Eastbay dunk during the game’s first half, refers to these types of games as “aggressive scrimmages,” and pays them no mind after they’re over.

The only thing he’s worried about during his final year is to make his mark on HS basketball and attain the individual accolades that come with being a top basketball prospect—Jordan Brand Classic and Gatorade POY—while he makes a decision on which college he’ll suit up for in the fall.

Oh, and lead Sierra Canyon back to the Golden 1 Center come this March.

“Everybody on the team has the same goal,” he says. “We’re all just trying to win state.”

There’s just something cool about NBA players coming to watch and support high school hoopers. We’ve seen Dwyane Wade, Josh Richardson and John Wall among others in high school gyms so far this season.

And now we can add 3-time NBA champ Draymond Green, as well as Zach Collins to the list after they stopped by to check out Sierra Canyon at the Les Schwab Invitational.

Sierra Canyon is one of the most exciting teams in SoCal, seeing as they sport Cassius Stanley, Scottie Pippen Jr. and Kenyon Martin Jr. They face University High School in the Final.

As Cassius Stanley poses for photos on the famous basketball courts of Venice Beach in mid-April, bystanders whisper amongst each other as they watch from a few feet away. Pockets of small crowds begin to form on the sidelines as a few Muscle Beach-goers curiously ask about the teenager hanging on the rim while SLAM’s camera crew snaps some shots of him. Those who know about the 6-5 junior guard begin to fill others in on his résumé.

The L.A. area is known as a hotbed for basketball talent, and next season Stanley will find himself at the helm of the crop. While local guys like Russell Westbrook, James Harden, DeMar DeRozan and Paul George enjoy being among the League’s biggest names, Stanley will be looked upon as next in line.

His dad, Jerome, has served as a sports agent for around three decades, so the Sierra Canyon HS standout has witnessed the ins and outs of what it’s like to be a star athlete from a very unique perspective.

Jerome has represented both basketball and football players and is recognized as the first black agent to ever represent the No. 1 pick in the NFL draft. His list of clients has included Baron Davis, Chad Johnson, Brian Shaw, Keyshawn Johnson and Dennis Northcutt.

For Stanley, spending time in the gym with professional athletes has been the norm ever since he can remember. The soon-to-be HS senior, who says he’s been training with Paul George and Detroit Pistons guard Reggie Jackson the last couple of summers, would constantly find himself in the same room with future Hall of Famers.

“I remember one day early in middle school I was training for baseball with this pitching coach that my dad knew,” Stanley says, thinking back on practice sessions at USC. “It was the first day and there was like five or six of us. And then right next to me was Tom Brady. It was just so unreal because this is one of the greatest football players ever and for a week straight I was just training with [him].”

Not only has he been exposed to top athletes and their trainers, Stanley has also grown an interest for the business side of sports. Watching his dad negotiate deals with teams and brands, the top-15 national recruit developed an understanding and appreciation for the inner-workings of contracts.

“A couple of weeks ago I was just walking to the door and on the counter were five or six players’ sneaker contracts,” says Stanley, who adds he would like to become commissioner of the NBA once his playing career is over. “I was really just interested to see what it looks like. I wanted to see what these negotiations look like inside.

“I try to pick my dad’s brain all the time about contracts or sneaker [deals], doing ads for when he has his players doing commercials. I don’t even think he knows sometimes that I’m picking his brain. It just fascinates me.”

The five-star recruit has become highly heralded for his jaw-dropping athleticism. There’s a YouTube highlight mix of him that describes him as the “best athlete in HS since Vince Carter” in its title and has drawn over 1.6 million views. He was only a freshman when the video was posted online.

Additionally, playing for Sierra Canyon, which neighbors Calabasas and counts Kendall and Kylie Jenner and Willow Smith as alums, has provided an extra layer of intrigue. The team currently features two sons of former NBAers—Scotty Pippen Jr and Kenyon Martin Jr—who, along with Stanley, will be seniors next season. Kanye West and Drake were reportedly among the celebrity spectators that stopped by to take in games this past season. The Trailblazers went on to win the open division state championship this spring.

Stanley, meanwhile, finds himself looking to prove that he’s more than just a YouTube-made high-flyer. And with all eyes on him next season, the stage is set for him to make his point.

“People see my highlights and think I’m just a dunker and super athletic with no skill,” he says. “It used to really bug me earlier in high school and I used to really try to prove to other people that I was more than just a dunker. But then I started to realize that I’m just going to play my game. I don’t ever dunk in games, really. I realized that when people come to see my games they might be disappointed, because I’m all skill.”

“The playground, or as I like to think about it; the beginning.”

These were the exact words Blake Griffin opened up with in Jordan Brand’s campaign video earlier this month for the Super.Fly 2017, a performance silhouette Griffin has been the face of since 2012, to describe playing basketball outdoors. The video takes place in a park where people are playing 5-on-5, kids are on the sidelines, a group of friends is chilling nearby and Griffin talks about how playing basketball on the blacktop molded him into the player he is today.

The blacktop was where a person earned their stripes and where your toughness was tested. Long before social media, performance facilities, apps like Open Runs and Infinite Hoops and Instagram trainers, the perfect place to play basketball was to travel to a local park in your neighborhood with a group of friends in hopes of finding others to get some run in.

There were no mixtapes, rankings, individual workouts or AAU tournaments every other day—just your five versus another five doing everything possible to win and remain on the court.

It’s where “I got next” are the three universal words that imply you and your squad face the winners and you can match up with someone to show you belong despite age, race or size. Where you had to earn respect—enough to be given a nickname and have other players pick you up if they needed an extra guy. Where arguments (and sometimes altercations) over points and foul calls are the norm, rims have missing nets or little remains of the chain are visible, and the intensity when it’s point-up feels like the final seconds of Game 7.

SLAM OG Scoop Jackson best described hooping outdoors in “Heaven: Playground Basketball,” an ode to the blacktop to coincide with the Super.Fly 2017 release on Jordan’s website.

“There’s a feel, spirit, connection and beauty to this game when played away from the lights, cameras, corporate impurity, insanity and pageantry that is close to indescribable,” says Jackson. “The words fail to do justice for or justify.”

Being a Los Angeles native, playing basketball outdoors is really a thing of the past. And while the whole L.A.-New York basketball debate is a never ending topic, the one thing I can respect about New York other than the fact that there’s damn near a court on every block, is that you can more than likely find a run somewhere at anytime of the day.

But this past weekend, Jordan Brand restored that feeling of competitive outdoor basketball in L.A. with “The Playground,” an all-day, win-or-go-home-style tournament that featured some of the highly touted high school players in the Los Angeles area.

Outfitted in different colorways of the Super.Fly 2017 and custom-made shorts made by Don C, four players served as team captains, handpicking a group of their closest friends for bragging rights to show who was the best team in front of Griffin and the spectators that hovered around an outdoor court in the heart of Downtown L.A.

Although Cassius Stanley’s Team Saiyans came up short in the semifinals and Harvard-bound Spencer Freedman and Beyond the Arc won The Playground’s first-ever championship, the experience was a memorable one.

“It’s been nothing but just fun stuff with all of my friends like Shareef [O’Neal], Bol Bol and Josh Christopher,” says Stanley, ESPN’s No. 11-ranked player in the Class of 2019 from Sierra Canyon (CA) HS. “It’s interesting because in the beginning it’s a little weird to get acclimated, but once you start playing, it’s just basketball and it’s fun.”

The NBA Players Association has been giving back for a minute now. Not bound to allegiances with any particular shoe company, former and current NBA ballers not only give back to those who could be following in their footsteps, but get a jump start on potential coaching careers. High school players and former NBA players alike are led by someone who has enjoyed great success as both a player and a coach: John Lucas.

The top pick in the ’76 Draft and currently Rockets player development coach has been through it all. His personal struggles are well known and now, his goal in life is to try to make sure that those involved with the game don’t follow down the path that led him fighting an uphill battle for redemption. Comprised of various high school scouts, the NBA Top 100 selection committee jets throughout the country during the year looking for not just the elite but also the sleepers who have long term NBA potential and are still not getting the love they deserve.

Led by guys like Ricky Davis, Jason Terry, and Rajon Rondo, the high school campers were given some guidance on what to do (and what not to do) if they hope to have a successful career in the League. The NBA counselors keep it brutally real with the campers, regaling stories of struggles both in their personal lives and dealing with coaches on the court. Keeping the effort level right, lead guards such as Jason Terry, Will Bynum, and John Lucas III showed their leadership by bringing up the intensity during the games. The inspired play and super deep talent pool led to numbers that were widely dispersed across the board, but still served as a platform for a number of players to seriously rise their stock.

While the camp was loaded with rising seniors, there were a number of elite underclassmen who were invited to the camp. Here are a few of the ones who put on a show:

Matthew Hurt, 6-9 PF, Rochester John Marshall (MN), 2019

One of the most skilled forwards in his grade, Matthew Hurt is the epitome of today’s new age face-up forward. He showed range out to the NBA line, can take slower defenders off the bounce, and has the moves to post smaller defenders. The versatility that he offers on the offensive end is what makes him Minnesota’s top big man, as well as one of the very best nationally in the Class of 2019. With his brother Michael already playing for the Golden Gophers, many expect Matthew to follow his big bro’s footsteps and become a program changer for Richard Pitino.

Cassius Stanley, 6-5, PG/SG, Harvard Westlake (CA), 2019

While the aerial magic that Cassius Stanley brings to the table is well known, not many understand the improvements he’s made as a point guard. He’s learned how to play pick and roll basketball, showing off his explosive burst and making solid decisions with the ball in his hands. Add in the fact that he straight up put the clamps on people at either guard spot and you understand why Stanley was arguably the best guard at the Top 100 Camp.

Cole Anthony, 6-3, PG, Archbishop Molloy (NY), 2019

It was clear that Cole Anthony came to Charlottesville with a chip on his shoulder and he definitely proved how deadly he could be as a scoring point guard. The explosive guard has a number of acrobatic takes to the rim, made great reads off of ball screens, and seemed hyped for any big matchup that was put in front of him. Finishing 7th in the camp in scoring and 4th in assists, it’s safe to say that Anthony cemented himself amongst the nation’s top lead guards, regardless of class.

Ashton Hagans, 6-4, PG, Oak Hill Academy (VA), 2019

As far as blowing up, not too many have exploded the way that Ashton Hagans has this spring. The 6-4 lead guard ran the show for Game Elite’s 17U on the adidas Gauntlet and killed. He didn’t light it up in the scoring column, but led the camp in both assists and steals. The big point guard controlled the tempo of the game, locked down on defense, and showed immense growth running a team since we first saw him over a year ago. Hagans is now regarded by some services as the top point guard in the Class of 2019 and literally has just about every elite program in the country fighting for his services.

Patrick McCaffery, 6-8, SF, Iowa City West (IA), 2019

Another new age forward, Patrick McCaffery is still flying a little under the radar because everyone assumes that he’s automatically going to play for his Pops at Iowa. While that is likely the case, he’s not as sexy of a prospect for recruiting analysts as the dude who just blew up and got four ACC offers. Regardless, he can straight up ball with the best of them. Having hit a late growth spurt, Patrick has the skills of a guard and the size of a forward. The deceptive athlete is remarkably agile, can shoot the lights out from deep, and is a threat to dunk on you in transition (as seen by his final play at camp). While Patrick definitely needs to get stronger, he’s got all of the makings of a five star prospect.

Tyrese Maxey, 6-3, PG/SG, South Garland HS (TX), 2019

A player who continually gets better, Maxey has stood out at every event that we’ve caught glimpse of him at (others being Pangos All-South and EYBL LA). The power guard is incredibly shifty, had a number of creative finishes at the rack, and locked down on the perimeter. Maxey is already a high priority of the entire Big 12 and is on the way to being the next McDonald’s All-American out of Dallas.

Every high school class has that one player whose athleticism is just otherworldly. And this year’s sophomore group, the Class of 2019, is no different. Meet Cassius Stanley, a 6-4 shooting guard out of Harvard-Westlake School in Southern California. Rated as a top-10 prospect in the 2019 class, Stanley is highly touted for his explosiveness and overall athleticism. He’s starting to develop into a more well-rounded threat, sinking the jumper and facilitating for others. UCLA reportedly offered him a scholarship before he even began attending high school.

Last weekend the freak athlete partook in “The League” fall showcase and BallisLife was there to capture him in action. More specifically, to catch those jaw-dropping finishes at the rim by the blue-chipper. Check out the video above.

A kid by the name of Cassius Stanley has been turning heads on the West Coast with his spectacular, high-flying finishes this season. Even more impressive is that he’s only a freshman. A 6-5 shooting guard at Harvard-Westlake in Studio City (CA), some media outlets have already referred to him as the potential top prospect in the Class of 2019. A between-the-legs reverse dunk from last month ended up being selected as the top play of the night on ESPN’s SportsCenter Top 10. If his freshman season is any indication, looks like Stanley might be a fun player to keep an eye on as he develops over the next three years at the prep level.
