Grayson Allen was on fire last night against the Mavericks and stole the show early on with 22 points in the first half on 7/7 shooting, including 7/7 from three-point range.

The Bucks started 9-0 out the gate but have gone 5-5 over their last ten contests. On Sunday, the good vibes came out after the Bucks held on for a wire-to-wire victory over the Mavericks, who lost their fourth consecutive contest. Allen finished the game with 25 points on 80 percent shooting. He also had five assists, two steals, and one block.

“The hoop looked huge,” Allen said per ESPN.

Giannis Antetokounmpo had his usual outstanding performance as well. He led all scorers with 30 points on 57.9 percent shooting, 11 rebounds, and four dimes. Mavericks head coach Jason Kidd was complimentary of how Antetokounmpo and Allen’s games complimented each other last night.

“He was on fire,” Kidd said. “We gave him a lot of great looks, and he knocked them down. Giannis put pressure on the rim, and we just couldn’t get to their shooters.”

The Milwaukee Bucks shot 17/37 from behind the arc, matching their season-high mark for made three-pointers. Allen’s sizzling shot-making led this in the first half, but Antetokounmpo was ardent about ensuring the other parts of Allen’s game were also acknowledged.

“He’s not just a good shooter,” Antetokounmpo said. “If you’re sleeping and you’re being lazy, he’s going to drive the ball, drive the close-out and go and dunk it. It just makes him dangerous. As much as they respect the 3, they’ve got to respect the drive also.”

Coming into the game, it was touted as a battle between two MVP candidates, Antetokounmpo and Luka Doncic. Despite spectacular performances from both, Allen completely stole the show, which may be enough to get Milwaukee’s season back on track.

The NBA has reportedly suspended Bucks guard Grayson Allen for one game over his flagrant 2 on Alex Caruso, per ESPN League insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

The hard foul Allen committed on Caruso caused the 27-year-old Bulls guard to suffer a fractured wrist that will cause him to miss six-eight weeks following surgery. Both Caruso and Coach Billy Donovan have not held back on how they feel about the foul after their 94-90 loss, where the Bald Mamba scored seven points, secured eight rebounds, and dished out four assists in 24 minutes.

“Dude just grabbed me out of the air,” Caruso said per ESPN. “It’s kind of bulls—. I don’t know what else you can do about it. I’m just glad that I didn’t have any major scary injuries right away.”

Donovan didn’t think Allen fouled Caruso with any malicious intent, but he didn’t argue with the referees’ decision to assess Alen a flagrant foul 2 either.

“For Alex to be in the air and for [Allen] to take him down like that, he could’ve ended his career,” Donovan said after the game on Friday. “He has a history of this. That to me was really — it was really dangerous. I hope the league takes a hard look at something like that because that could have really, really seriously hurt him.”

Allen contributed five points, three boards, and one steal before being ejected for the first time in his career. Allen also got called for his first flagrant foul of the season; it’s the second such foul in his career since he was removed from a Summer League game in 2019 after committing two flagrant fouls.

This was the first time Allen has been called for a flagrant foul this season and the second such foul in his career — although he was tossed from a Summer League game in 2019 after committing two flagrant fouls within seconds of each other. Allen cleared up what happened in the aftermath on his Discord channel after being seen laughing on the bench.

“Also to this point. I stood at half court watching till he got up till see if he was okay. Then when I was back by our bench a teammate made a joke and I laughed. I wasn’t laughing at the foul,” Allen said in his defense. “It was very unfortunate how it played out. I jumped to block it with my left and as I’m spinning went to grab the ball with my right hand not throw him down. It was a really hard fall and I’m glad he’s okay. If I could do the play over again knowing he’d fall like that I wouldn’t make the play.”

The next time Allen can play will be when Milwaukee (30-19) plays the New York Knicks (23-24) on Friday.

The Milwaukee Bucks and guard Grayson Allen have agreed on a two-year, $20 million dollar rookie extension, per ESPN insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

The Bucks acquired Allen via trade with the Memphis Grizzlies during the offseason, after the Duke product averaged 10.6 points per game in 2020-21 while shooting 39.1 percent from 3-point range. During his time with the Grizzlies, Allen also earned playoff experience, which improved his fit with a team needing more off-ball threats.

For the reigning NBA champions, extending Allen’s contract is a significant sign of their belief in his ability to help them repeat.

Allen recorded 10 points, six assists and two steals as a starter in Milwaukee’s 2021-22 season opener, a blowout win over the Brooklyn Nets.

The Memphis Grizzlies are trading veteran guard Mike Conley to the Utah Jazz, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports. In exchange, the rebuilding franchise will receive a package including two first-round picks, Grayson Allen, Jae Crowder and Kyle Korver.

Memphis-bound, per Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, are the No. 23 pick in this year’s draft and a protected future first-rounder. That future first-rounder could convey as early as next year but comes with particular protections, as Chris Herrington of the Daily Memphian lays out.

The Grizzlies will get the first-rounder if it falls within the 8-14 range next year. If not, the same protection will apply in 2021. The protections decrease from there to top-6 six in 2022, top-3 in 2023 and top-1 in 2024 before converting to two second-round picks in 2025.

We wrote about the Jazz stepping up as frontrunners to land Conley earlier this week, giving them a top-rate veteran point guard as they look to compete in the Western Conference. Conley now will suit up alongside Donovan Mitchell in a dynamic backcourt.

According to ESPN’s Bobby Marks, the two clubs won’t be able to make the deal official until July 6, when the Jazz can absorb Conley’s deal with cap room. That would mean that Utah will make the No. 23 pick on behalf of Memphis tomorrow night.

Although Conley’s contributions will give the Jazz a level of depth they haven’t seen in their previous postseason runs, he does come with a substantial price tag. Conley will earn $32.5 million in 2019-20 and then $34.5 million the next.

The Grizzlies will have the chance to cut some costs by waiving Korver, something the veteran may be amenable to if he’s looking to play for a contender. According to Basketball Insiders, only $3.4 million of Korver’s $7.5 million is guaranteed and the deadline for the team to waive him by is July 7.

After careful consideration, Duke guard Grayson Allen has decided that he will return to college for his senior year instead of entering the 2017 NBA Draft. The decision was announced on Tuesday afternoon by the school. Allen has become a polarizing figure in the world of college basketball, mainly due to having built up a reputation for tripping and kicking players (on multiple occasions). After helping Duke claim the National Championship as a freshman, Allen was projected as a first-round draft pick, but his stock has fluctuated since.

Below is a statement from Allen via GoDuke.com:

“The last few weeks have provided the opportunity for a lot of reflection and prayer,” Allen said. “I’m a firm believer that when something feels right, you go with it. The chance to play with next year’s team just felt right. I’m completely focused on helping Coach K (Mike Krzyzewski) and our staff lead this team to a special season. I love being a Duke student, and continuing to be part of the university culture is something I don’t take for granted.”

He averaged 14.5 points and 3.5 assists per game this past season for Duke, who finished with a 28-9 record.

During last night’s game against Elon, Duke star Grayson Allen intentionally tripped Steven Saint Ana and was hit with a technical foul. It marked the third time in a year that Allen has intentionally tripped a player on an opposing team. Allen went to the bench and was clearly upset by the technical call and had to be calmed down by assistant coach Jon Scheyer:

Allen was emotional after the game and apologized to his team, the officials and Saint Ana:

During the post game press conference, head coach Mike Krzyzewski did not commit to punishing Allen, but Duke released a statement this morning announcing that Allen is suspended for an “indefinite amount of time.”

Via ESPN:

“We have had the opportunity to thoroughly review the incident involving Grayson Allen from last night’s game against Elon,” coach Mike Krzyzewski said in a statement issued Thursday morning. “As I stated last night, the incident was unacceptable and inexcusable. He took an important step last night by apologizing in person to Steven Santa Ana and Coach Matt Matheny.

“As a program, we needed to take further steps regarding his actions that do not meet the standards of Duke Basketball. To that end, we have determined that Grayson will be suspended from competition for an indefinite amount of time.”

Duke’s next game isn’t until next Saturday, December 31 when they open up ACC play against Virginia Tech.

Duke has been uncharacteristically mediocre in conference play this year. The Blue Devils came into Saturday’s game against Virginia with a 6-4 mark in ACC play and needed a win to help propel themselves back into the top-25. In an excellent back-and-forth contest, Duke took down the Cavaliers, 63-62. While Brandon Ingram led the team with a 25-point, 7-rebound afternoon, the dagger was scored by Grayson Allen. Sure, it looked like he traveled, but this was a nice way for the Blue Devils to celebrate Coach K’s 69th birthday.

Duke ran Virginia Tech off the floor on Saturday afternoon, 82-58. It was a dominant performance by one of the best teams in the country, and it featured a Duke player literally running a Virginia Tech player off the floor. Grayson Allen got the ball on a fast break and was going up for a dunk. The only issue was there was a Hokies player standing in between him and the hoop. Allen decided to go up anyway and the VT player decided it wasn’t worth trying to draw a charge, so he just got out of the way and ran out of bounds.

The post Blue Steel appeared first on SLAM.

Grayson Allen was on the court at Madison Square Garden for a total of 75 minutes Friday night and Saturday afternoon. In that time, he scored 62 points, making 18 of 27 shots. But even after watching all of them, it’s hard to figure out exactly what makes him so good.

He’s arguably Duke’s most important offensive player, but he barely played until the NCAA Tournament last season.

“It’s not like Grayson is this combat veteran,” head coach Mike Krzyzewski reminded reporters after his team’s first game at the 2K Classic.

He’s a scoring guard who rarely handles the ball. On offense, he floats between the elbow and corner on the weak side; when he springs into motion, his constant curls and rub-offs seem to be resurrected from JJ Redick’s Duke playbook.

He’s become known for his dunks–even before his highlight reel slam against Michigan State, he won the McDonalds’ All-American dunk contest as a high school senior–but he did most of his damage from the perimeter at MSG. He had a few smooth lay-ups, but most of his drives were to set up assists.

Talking about a Duke player’s intangibles comes dangerously close to cliché. But the person who sees Allen play the most and has presided on over 1,000 wins thinks the kid has something special inside.

To get a perspective on that X-factor, look at the stats from Allen’s last game before coming to New York. He looked bad and the team floundered with him. Kentucky clogged the lane forcing Allen to focus on simply getting a shot off in traffic rather than scoring; he finished that game with four turnovers and only two baskets.

Even more dangerously, he didn’t act like a player up for a fight. “He didn’t have a strong face,” Krzyzewski said. “When he saw it, he said ‘Whoa.’ But we watched it and I said, ‘Look at your face. Is that how you want to look?’ He said, ‘I can’t believe it.’ And I said, ‘That’s what I’m looking at. But that’s what Kentucky is looking at and that’s what your teammates are looking at.’ When you’re an outstanding player, you win not just by how you perform, but you win by how you look and how you act. You set up an environment that’s conducive to winning. That’s the responsibility of your best players. My best players have done that and [Allen] is as good of a player as we have.”

Jump ahead to the first game at MSG on Friday. It’s a big game for Duke and Allen to rebound. Except he isn’t starting. Even when he comes into the game, Derryck Thornton is the primary ball handler.

“I just told [Allen] ‘You’re not starting,” Coach K later explained. “We have a great relationship. When we got back from Kentucky the next day, I met with half my team individually and just told them ‘This is what I think.’ And with Grayson, I said I was disappointed. ‘You didn’t make an adjustment. You’re not going to start. You don’t have to be great, you have to be consistent.”

He might not have been looking for greatness, but that’s what Coach K got.

INDIANAPOLIS, IN - APRIL 04: Grayson Allen #3 of the Duke Blue Devils goes up for a dunk in the second half against the Michigan State Spartans during the NCAA Men's Final Four Semifinal at Lucas Oil Stadium on April 4, 2015 in Indianapolis, Indiana. (Photo by Andy Lyons/Getty Images)

Allen entered the game against VCU for the first time at 16:25; 40 seconds later, he knocked down a three. Nine seconds after that he pulled down a defensive rebound before driving the length of the court to draw a foul. After the TV timeout, he made both free throws. The tone was set.

Allen would go on to finish the half with 15 points; the second half would be a mirror performance, giving him a career-high 30 on the back of his benching.

“The response that Grayson had from Kentucky is huge. I think it’s spectacular, to be quite frank with you,” Krzyzewski said. “A lot of kids would question themselves, and he never did.”

To make things more impressive, Allen wasn’t the beneficiary of any set plays. Coach K revealed that for much of the game, his players were running a motion offense. So when Allen received a pass near the top of the key after running off a screen, it was up to him to assess the defense and react. When the defender lagged behind, he hit his jumpers; when they pressed him, he drove to the rim. It’s simple in concept, but the sophomore executed it without a hitch.

“For us, it’s all about moving on,” Allen said after the VCU game. “There was obviously a rough film session after the Kentucky game where we talked about the improvements that needed to be made. Once you see that you move on to the next game. You make those improvements and move on. For me, coming off the bench it was nothing different as if I was starting. It’s the same aggressive, attacking mindset.

When asked specifically about what adjustments he made, Allen said he focused on “seeing lanes to drive—not forcing the issue every time and finding the open guy.”

“He was driving to score, not driving to get a shot off,” his coach added.

And how did Allen follow up a career-high performance at Madison Square Garden? By setting another career-high in the championship game against Georgetown on the way to MVP honors. His performance was one that even his coach had to marvel at.

“I’ve leaned on my great players my whole career,” Kryzewski said. “It’s not about coaching, it’s about allowing your great players to be great and putting them in positions to do things you can’t orchestrate. We kept doing a few things that would give him an opportunity to make his reads. His stat line is one of the sensational stat lines, just ask someone who’s been doing this for 41 years. 32 points on 12 shots is crazy. It’s just a crazy stat. I’d like to see him do that again and again and again. Maybe we should get him more shots; he’d get about 40.”

But even with Allen’s scoring, the most noticeable thing about him is his emotion. That’s nothing new for Duke; the Coach K era has seen plenty of floor slapping, fist pumping, and hugging. But the ferocity and the frequency of Allen’s fist pumps, which are closer to haymakers than anything else, seem different. Part of it likely comes down to inexperience–these are big shots at big moments for a relatively new player–but another part is his personality. He’s a player who knows he can walk the walk and wants to prove it.

Coach K is careful to note the youth and inexperience of this Duke team, which has seven freshmen as compared to four upperclassmen. “One talks that because we’re Duke and because I’m coaching, that’s it you’re supposed to be great,” he said. “We’re a good team, and we hope to be a really good team. But we’re not this juggernaut or anything. We’ve got to fight for everything.”

Despite that, Grayson Allen sent a message at Madison Square Garden. This Duke team might not be great, but he can be. And Duke can go as far as he takes them.

Duke was in a battle with Georgetown in the final game of the 2K Classic on Sunday, but the Blue Devils ended up topping the Hoyas, 86-84.
