Quavo Hosts 7th Annual Huncho Day in Atlanta with Druski and Flau’jae Johnson

Grammy-nominated superstar Quavo recently teamed up with some of the most multi-talented stars in culture today for the 7th annual Huncho Day—which featured a celebrity football game and the first-ever basketball and football day dedicated to community action.

Held in Atlanta at Quavo’s alma mater, Berkmar High School, Huncho Day featured a 7v7 football exhibition game between Team Huncho Basketball and Team Huncho Elite, as well as a celebrity flag football game and a Team Huncho basketball game.

Guest coaches included none other than LSU standout Flau’jae Johnson—who can drop buckets on the court and spit bars in the booth—as well as comedian/social media sensation, Drusk, former NBA Champion Stephen Jackson, Tampa Bay Buccaneers’ safety Richard LeConte III, Utah Utes’ guard Deivon Smith, rapper King Harris and more.

Johnson even coached the white team alongside Quavo, while the orange team was led by Druski and McCloud.

The sold-out event, which brought together both sports and culture, was all for a greater cause, raising $50,000 for The Rocket Foundation in support of gun violence prevention. Quavo founded the Rocket Foundation in November of 2022 to honor the life and legacy of Takeoff.

Hip-Hop Star, Quavo, Breaks Down Relationship with NBA Stars LeBron James and Trae Young

The relationship between hip-hop and sports continue to grow as the two worlds clash once again, this time in an interview with Bleacher Report’s Taylor Rooks and hip-hop star Quavo.

Quavo, a member of the popular rap group the Migos, got the chance to speak up about his relationship with both Atlanta Hawks to point guard Trae Young and Los Angeles Lakers superstar LeBron James.

LeBron—long known to run with the biggest stars in hip-hop—is one of the few people who get early access to new Migos music Quavo states.

“I feel like it’s organic, and then if we just feeling the vibes, I know he needs music,” Quavo told Rooks.

“Sometimes he needs that unreleased music. He in the lab when no one sees it.”

He went on to also explain if James offers creative feedback on their music.

“Most definitely,” he said. “I think so. For sure…He knows the objective. He gets the point, and I feel like, with music and sports, I feel like we need that fuel.”

A Georgia native who was raised in Atlanta, Quavo also discusses his relationship with Young, the face of the Hawks’ franchise. Quavo coined Trae with the nickname “Ice Trae” back in 2018, a nickname that the young star has since embraced. The two begin to foster a relationship overtime as the Hawks grow as a contender under Trae Young.

“He good man, just coolin’. He really just be chillin. He don’t like to do too much. He just be coolin’, trying to work,” Quavo stated. “He in the ‘A’ to stay and we proud of him. It’s just a good feeling when I see him out there, you know what I’m saying.”

“Words can’t even explain it. That’s just my dawg. So whenever he hoop, I be feeling like I’m hoopin.'”

Quavo Huncho started his own AAU team this year, YRN, and they went head-to-head with the No. 1 freshman in the nation, Emoni Bates. Both teams were lights out from three, and the game went down to the wire (full highlights above).

Looks like Quavo’s got a squad to keep an eye on for the next several years!

Bronny James and the North Coast Blue Chips lit up Las Vegas last week as they won the Big Foot Hoops 7th Grade Championship. The Chips entertained Quavo, Dwyane Wade, Chris Paul, Tyronn Lue, and more with plenty of highlights, including Bronny’s first ever dunk! LeBron James himself got into the action, helping coach on the sidelines and even throwing down a few pregame dunks.

Q+A: Rapper Lil Durk

Chicago-born artist Lil Durk dropped by the SLAM offices this week to discuss which rappers can ball, which ballers can rap, the inspiration for his latest album (Just Cause Y’all Waited), and more:

SLAM: What’s your background with basketball? When did you develop a passion for the game?

Durk: Grammar school. I used to play in grammar school. But I don’t ever say, I used to play, because I was always in trouble with my grades, so I could never play on teams. But definitely grammar school. I went to Guggenheim Elementary. Shout out Chicago.

SLAM: Who was your favorite player growing up?

Durk: Allen Iverson. Definitely the GOAT. His whole background, everything – I related to it. So definitely AI.

SLAM: Which rapper is the best hooper?

Durk: That’s easy – Me. There’s a couple dudes out there that rap. I like Chris Brown. I like his game. I like Quavo game too.

SLAM: Which NBA player is the best rapper?

Durk: Damian Lillard. He can actually rap. You know how some be like, I ain’t listening to him. But [Dame] can actually rap.

SLAM: What about Iman Shumpert?

Durk: He can rap too, but their styles are way different. Shout out Shump.

SLAM: We saw you put out a video challenging a bunch of rappers to play you.

Durk: I beat Bow Wow for $10,000 already. PnB Rock. Tory Lanez. Swae Lee. G Herbo. YFN Lucci. Chris Brown ain’t say nothing to me yet. We just making it a fun thing. All the hoopers who say they got skills – you got to show it.

SLAM: Which of those guys has the best jump shot?

Durk: Quavo was in there too. I got to give it to Quavo.

SLAM: Coming from Chicago, do you have a favorite Jordan memory?

Durk: When the Bulls won a championship in 1998. The whole city was going crazy. And I’m young, I ain’t know what was going on. I’m like, damn the city just going up.

SLAM: What was the inspiration for your latest album?

Durk: It was just like the new and improved Durk. Just dropping that new energy, leaving Def Jam [and not] being held back. Fans been wanting to see what’s going on. So that was like the first project. It’s the new me.

SLAM: What’s in the works now?

Durk: Turn up. Consistent music, consistent videos, festivals. Just a lot more scenery things. Being more in the mix.

SLAM: Is there one rapper or artist you haven’t gotten the chance to collab with that you really want to?

Durk: It was Future, but I got a lot going on with him. So Drake.

SLAM: Is there any chance you collab with an NBA player on a song?

Durk: Definitely, man. That’s what it’s about. Being creative and opening new doors.

SLAM: Give us some quick NBA predictions. Who you got for Rookie of the Year?

Durk: I’m gonna say [Kyle] Kuzma. He’s been killing. He’s been holding up his team a lot too.

SLAM: MVP?

Durk: I’m gonna give it to James Harden. That boy been going crazy. He is leading a lot this year too.

SLAM: NBA Champions?

Durk: I’m a Golden State fan, so of course Golden State.

Kevin Durant and the Warriors visited Atlanta on Friday, and Migos rapper Quavo, who was also the 2018 Celebrity Game MVP at All-Star Weekend, was in the building to take in the action.

Quavo To Play In Celebrity All-Star Game

Quavo made a big announcement on ESPN‘s First Take Thursday morning.

The Migos’ member revealed that he will be suiting up for the 2018 Celebrity Game at All-Star Weekend, joining Team Clippers which will be coached by Katie Nolan:

Quavo, Shareef O’Neal and Bol Bol Ball Out in Pickup Game

The time between the NBA Finals and Summer League is a basketball desert, Big3 notwithstanding. Thankfully, we still have some cool pickup basketball videos to hold us over and the latest from L.A. is a doozy.

Superstar rapper Quavo shows off his smooth lefthanded stroke, drilling a few jumpers while sharing the court with Shaq’s son Shareef, and the late Manute Bol’s son Bol Bol. Per ESPN, the 6-8 O’Neal is the 18th-best player in the Class of 2018, and he’ll be headed to Tucson to play his college ball for Sean Miller at Arizona. Bol is currently regarded as the No. 4 recruit in the class of ’18 and has an impressive list of offers—including Arizona.

Resembling a Brandon Jennings-type scoring guard, Quavo has a quick release that’s tough to defend. But, as you can see in the video above, it’s his hustle on defense that might be the most impressive aspect of his game (peep 2:11).

WATCH: John Wall Trash Talks Julio Jones, Gucci Mane and Quavo

After seeing Washington’s 22-point lead cut to just two, John Wall went off for 19 points in the fourth quarter to lead the Wizards to a 115-99 Game 6 win, and a trip to the second round.

With 3:31 remaining, Wall knocked-down a fadeaway to open up a 9-point lead. He then looked to Julio Jones, Gucci Mane and Quavo and talked some trash as the Hawks called timeout.

Wall went on to score the Wizards final 13 points en route to a playoff career-high 42 points.

After the game, Wall told reporters what he said: “I told them I was going to get 35 or more and we was going to win.”
