Michael Jordan had nothing to do with the controversial exclusion of Isiah Thomas from the Dream Team, according to Rod Thorn, one of its principal architects.

“Isiah’s name never came up during that conversation,” says Thorn, pushing back against the long-held popular assumption that MJ and other NBA superstars didn’t want Zeke on the squad that dominated en route to Gold at the 1992 Summer Olympics.

Thorn acknowledges, however, that Thomas and the Detroit Pistons hadn’t exactly built up a lot of goodwill around the League.

Per ESPN:

“There was never anything in my conversation with (Jordan) that had to do with Isiah Thomas, period,” Thorn said Wednesday. “He said, ‘I’ll do it.’ … Isiah’s name never came up during that conversation. And he never backtracked and said he didn’t want to do it from that time on, to those of us in the NBA office.

“Now, if that in fact happened, then it happened with somebody else; because when I talked to him, he ended up saying he would definitely do it.”

Thorn was asked why Thomas was not on the roster, assuming Jordan had no input.

“That’s a good question, because Isiah was a great player, a fantastic player,” Thorn said. “There was some controversy with the Pistons regarding not shaking hands with the Bulls — there was some bad blood, obviously, there. … But when we ended up going with the first 10 guys, he did not end up making the team.”

The Wizards are bringing in Rod Thorn in an advisory role, according to Marc Stein of the New York Times.

Thorn has a lengthy resume that includes drafting Michael Jordan in 1983 and winning the NBA’s Executive of the Year award in 2002. Thorn previously held the title of Sixers Team President and most recently worked with the Bucks as a special consultant.

Thorn is the latest addition to Monumental Sports & Entertainment, the parent company of the Wizards, as the organization spent the offseason restructuring its front office. The franchise elevated Tommy Shepard to GM this summer as part of its data-driven, collaborative approach to improving the basketball team in Washington.

Longtime NBA front-office operative Rod Thorn, 73, will call it quits in August.

Thorn famously drafted Michael Jordan as the Chicago Bulls’ general manager in 1984, and enjoyed a long successful career at the League office, and also ran the New Jersey Nets.

Thorn will walk away from his gig this summer as the NBA President of Basketball Operations.

Per the AP:

“When I came back it was just for a transition-type period anyway,” he said. “When I came back I said I would stay for two years and two years is up in August, so that’ll be it.”

As a team executive, Thorn drafted Michael Jordan in Chicago and built the Nets into two-time Eastern Conference champions. He said Monday he has no plans to work for a team again, at least on a full-time basis. […] The 73-year-old Thorn previously spent 14 years at the league before taking the Nets job. He traded for Jason Kidd and won the 2001-02 Executive of the Year award, when the Nets made their first of two straight NBA Finals trips. He spent 11 years as team president and later held the same position for the Philadelphia 76ers.

He then agreed to return to the NBA and stay on during the transition from David Stern to Adam Silver as commissioner. […] Among Thorn’s duties was to serve as the league’s main disciplinarian. He said his job likely will be filled by senior vice president Kiki Vandeweghe.

The NBA’s longtime Executive VP of Basketball Operations, Stu Jackson, is stepping down after 13 years on the job. Jackson is reportedly looking for another front-office gig with a team, and he’ll be replaced by Rod Thorn who becomes the League’s President of Basketball Operations as of August 1. Per the press release: “Stu has made enormous contributions to the NBA over the past 13 years,’ said NBA Commissioner David Stern. ‘He informed Adam Silver, Joel Litvin and me some months ago that after a long and distinguished career at the league he felt that this was the appropriate time to step down. We thank Stu for a job very well done, including assisting with the transition to Rod, and wish him the best in his future endeavors.’ As EVP, Basketball Operations, Jackson was in charge of all oncourt and international basketball operations, including game rules, conduct, discipline and analytics and also served as chairman of the NBA Competition Committee and on FIBA’s Competition Commission and USA Basketball’s Board of Directors. ‘The NBA has given me an extraordinary opportunity to work with some of the most talented people in sports and I am extremely proud to be associated with the remarkable global growth of the league, which couldn’t be in better hands with Rod coming in to lead Basketball Operations,’ said Jackson. ‘I especially want to thank David, Adam and Joel for their exceptional leadership, friendship and continued support. I’m looking forward to applying my NBA experience as I move onto my next challenge.’ […] Thorn will oversee both Basketball and Referee Operations, reporting to the Commissioner. Most recently, Thorn was President of Basketball Operations for the Philadelphia 76ers. ‘As a player, coach, general manager, league vice president and team president, Rod has been a member of the NBA family for decades, and his basketball knowledge and team relationships are unparalleled,’ said Stern. ‘We are fortunate that his talents are available to serve the league at this time.’ … ‘I am looking forward to serving all 30 teams and our sport and am honored to be at the league office to help continue the game’s extraordinary growth,’ said Thorn. ‘As the NBA turns increasingly to analytics and continues to tap into its growing fan and player base on a global basis, there is much work to be done.'”

Sixers president Rod Thorn addressed the murky future of center Andrew Bynum, whose “bizarre” injuries put an end to his season prior to it ever really starting. Thorn says the team has yet to make a decision regarding Bynum’s impending free agency. Per the Delaware County Daily Times‘ Q&A: “With two home games left, do you feel the Sixers should have achieved more this year? ‘With the (Andrew) Bynum situation, we gave up some terrific assets in order to get Andrew. And Andrew hasn’t been able to play. So I think we played about as well as we could play otherwise. I think we have done some good things. We had a bad stretch in the year. Obviously, we are finishing up here on a pretty high note. But we rolled the dice to so speak with Bynum. I think if we had Bynum, we’d be a really good team. And with him not being able to play, it’s been a tough thing for us.’ Do you have a timetable on deciding whether to bring Bynum back? ‘I don’t. He doesn’t become a free agent until the end of June, the first of July.’ Will that be your decision to make the offer? ‘That decision? He is a free agent, he can go anywhere he wants to. It’s not just what we want to do, it’s what he wants to do, too.’ Will the Sixers make an offer? ‘We’ll have to see what transpires.’ Will that be your decision or ownership’s? ‘Ownership obviously will have a part in it. The basketball people will make recommendations and ownership will … and doctors will play a big part in that.’ So the Sixers will need some medical reports before deciding? ‘Oh, for sure. Oh, yeah. You try to do your due diligence. As Andrew is a free agent, he’ll do his due diligence and try to figure out exactly where he would like to play — or he wouldn’t, as the case may be. And from our perspective we will do our due diligence and try to figure out what we should do.'”

The Philadelphia Sixers would obviously prefer to have Andrew Bynum on the court, instead of the hair salon. But in case he doesn’t suit up at all this season, however, team president Rod Thorn — who calls the big fella’s injury situation “bizarre” — says they have insurance against his $16.9 million salary. Per USA Today: “There is a league-wide insurance that he’s under that gives you some relief along those lines,’ Thorn said. ‘It’s the same league-wide program that every player’s under. Unless you have a pre-existing condition — and he didn’t — so he’s on the same one as everybody else.’ […] That Bynum’s salary is at least partially insured lends credence to the team’s assertion that four doctors reviewed his medical history and approved the trade. Sixers co-owner and CEO Adam Aron has said that six doctors have actively treated Bynum throughout the season. […] ‘It’s a little bizarre, there’s no doubt about it,’ Thorn said about Bynum’s inability to get on the court. ‘He’s had problems. He’s worked very hard. As you can see when you see him, he’s huge. His upper body, he works in the weight room, he works hard, he just hasn’t been able to play. It’s been very tough for him and obviously it’s been very tough for us.’ Bynum will become an unrestricted free agent in July, when he’s hoping to land a long-term deal and a nine-figure payday. […] ‘I don’t know exactly what’s going to happen,’ Thorn said about whether Bynum will opt for surgery. ‘I think Andrew is very attuned to himself physically. He’s obviously seen a lot of doctors, so I think he’ll be able to make that decision when the time comes.'”

According to Yahoo! Sports, the Philly Sixers came hard after the Nuggets’ wunderkind general manager Masai Ujiri, who rebuffed their advances and stayed in Denver: “The 76ers were granted permission to talk to Ujiri earlier in the summer, but he ultimately resisted what would’ve been a lucrative package to replace Sixers president and GM Rod Thorn, sources said. Ujiri has emerged as a rising star among league front-office executives and had been the 76ers’ primary target along with new Atlanta Hawks GM Danny Ferry, sources said. The 76ers have narrowed the search and appear to be leaning toward promoting assistant GM Tony DiLeo to the GM job, league sources said. The 76ers had considered former New Orleans Hornets GM Jeff Bower, but as the Philadelphia Inquirer recently reported, DiLeo has emerged as the favorite to take over for Thorn. The Sixers’ ownership group had believed it could lure Ujiri, one of the lowest-paid GMs in the league, with a $2 million-plus annual package, sources said. Nevertheless, Ujiri’s strong relationship and trust in Denver president Josh Kroenke and owner Stan Kroenke, as well as his investment in a promising roster, led him to stay the course in Denver. Ujiri has a year left on his original three-year deal, and Denver will likely need to secure him with a long-term commitment to stave off future suitors.”

The highly-anticipated Dream Team doc aired last night on NBATV (you can watch it online if you missed it), and Isiah Thomas released a classy statement, as his exclusion from the legendary team continues to be a sore point 20 years later. I am proud of my career in the NBA and have fond memories of going head to head with all the members of the Team. I can’t speak to the selection process as I wasn’t involved. But 20 years later, their gold medal is still a momentous achievement.’ […] ‘I would have had Isiah on the team,’ NBA commissioner David Stern said. ‘He’s one of the great talents, a Hall of Famer, who had two championships and was on the cusp of a third. And he played that position (point guard) in some ways like no one ever played it, or has since. He’s one of our great players.'”

Plenty of hype has been built around the Dream Team doc airing on NBATV tomorrow night (9pm EST), and rightfully so. One of the more under-played aspects of the program to this point, however, is the criticism of Isiah Thomas – who was famously left off the team – by some of the Dream Teamers. Per the NY Post: “In a sneak preview shown at The NBA Finals for media Monday night, Michael Jordan reveals one of the ‘stipulations’ for him joining the Dream Team was having his Pistons rival not included but claimed the sentiment also came from the top. It has been long speculated Jordan kept Thomas off the club but the documentary reveals the snub ran deeper than just MJ. Jordan’s Bulls teammate, Scottie Pippen, also said he didn’t want Thomas on the club. ‘I despised how he played the game,’ Pippen said of Thomas. Pippen charged that Thomas spearheaded Detroit’s ‘Bad Boys’ and incited the rough play. ‘Isiah was the general,’ Pippen said. ‘He was the guy who would yap at his teammates and say ‘Kick them on their ass. Do whatever you have to do.’ No, I didn’t want him on the Dream Team.’ When asked if Jordan wanted Thomas on the 1992 Olympic club at the Barcelona Olympics, Pippen said, ‘I can’t speak for Michael but I don’t think he wanted him on the team.’ Jordan said in his interview that he was reluctant to join the Dream Team because he had a bad first Olympic experience as part of the college group and treasured his offseason. But he came around after Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Chris Mullin, David Robinson, among others, were all in. ‘That was one of the stipulations put to me that Isiah wasn’t part of the team,’ Jordan said. ‘I was getting strong innuendos it wasn’t just…it was coming from a higher place who didn’t want Isiah on the team.’ Former NBA deputy commissioner Russ Granik said Thomas was not considered because of the incident at the end of the recent Bulls-Pistons playoff series in which he had his teammates bolt the court before the final buzzer. It was seen as a lack of sportsmanship. ‘We were picking a group just after the Pistons had been eliminated by the Bulls,’ Granik said. ‘It was very bad timing for Isiah. Everyone had that impression in their mind, the picture of Isiah walking off the court.’ Rod Thorn, part of the Olympic selection committee and who drafted Jordan, said, ‘When the Pistons walked off the court before the final bell, it left a lot of bad taste in a lot of people’s minds.’ NBA TV officials said Monday a strong effort was made to get Thomas to participate in the documentary to give his side but he declined.”

In an email response Sunday, Thorn said the Sixers are ‘trying to ascertain the value of all of our players. Big difference.’ The Morning Journal (Ohio) claimed the Sixers are looking to move the 26-year-old Iguodala, who has four years and $56 million left on his contract (counting this season). With rumors swirling that he was unhappy with the new leadership in New Jersey, Rod Thorn stepped down from his position as longtime president of the team, and briefly “retired.” Until the Philadelphia Sixers came calling, that is.

Thorn will take over in Philly
, but current GM Ed Stefanksi is expected to keep his job with the organization.

The Phily Daily News reports:

The 76ers plan to hire Rod Thorn as the new team president, according to an NBA source. Announcement of the hiring will come today, according to the source. It appears Ed Stefanski, who was hired as the Sixers’ president and general manager in December 2007, will continue solely as the team’s GM.

Thorn was president of the New Jersey Nets for a decade. In his second season, 2001-02, the team reached the NBA Finals. Thorn and Stefanski, who was named the Nets’ GM in 2004, worked together for six seasons in New Jersey.

According to the source, the two sides reached an agreement yesterday, after chairman Ed Snider reached out to Thorn. Thorn left the New Jersey organization earlier this summer, not long after Russian billionaire Mikhail Prokhorov took over the franchise.

Stefanski and Thorn had previously worked side-by-side, in Jersey.

The NY Daily News claims that Rod Thorn — who plans to retire next month — was tired of having to answer to Mikhail Prokhorov and his “spies” within the Nets’ organization: “Rod Thorn’s decision to retire as president of the Nets was likely hastened by the presence of what he perceived to be Russian spies inside the team’s offices, sources say. According to sources close to the team, Thorn had quickly grown tired of having to answer to associates of new Russian owner Mikhail Prokhorov, who took control of the Nets in early May. After months of dealing with Prokhorov’s underlings looking over his shoulder, Thorn decided to walk away. He will step down on July 15, one week after the free agent signing period begins. Before news of his impending retirement broke Friday night, Thorn told the Daily News that he had no issues with either Prokhorov or his field generals. ‘That’s not right,’ Thorn said. ‘And I’m really serious, that’s not right. The new ownership has been great to me. I think they’re going to be the best owners in the league.”‘

Reportedly unhappy with the pay cut Mikhail Prokhorov has offered, Nets president Rod Thorn will reportedly resign his position on July 15. The Nets are believed to be putting together a three-year offer to lure Bryan Colangelo (then again, could it be Bryan’s father… or Jerry West?) as Thorn’s replacement: “[Thorn’s] current contract expires June 30, but he has yet to sign a new deal. […] Former Suns chairman and current USA basketball director Jerry Colangelo is the leading candidate to replace Thorn, who will be involved in picking his successor. Prokhorov wants a big name and likes the job Colangelo did with the U.S. Men’s Olympic team. Colangelo also has relationships with the top free agents in the upcoming class, which could help the Nets in recruiting them as well as ease the transition from Thorn’s reign. A league source said Colangelo will be offered a three-year deal for roughly $12 million to $15 million.”

The NY Post has sources insisting that Johnson is the man for the gig, but the New Jersey Nets have yet to confirm anything: “There has been no firm offer. But there have been talks with representatives — and former Mavs coach Avery Johnson is looking more and more like the choice to fill the coaching vacancy for the Nets. Reps for Johnson were in the New York-New Jersey area Monday and flew out yesterday, it was learned. Nets president Rod Thorn has maintained his tight-lipped stance about any and all candidates, simply acknowledging the process is ‘moving and ongoing’ and that he has no timetable for a hire. But several sources insist that Johnson has been and remains the leading choice — and that there were additional conversations with Thorn this week. One source felt a deal was close to being finalized, but Thorn insisted, ‘I have made no offer.'”

by Lang Whitaker

He made his $14 billion fortune in metals and alloys. He once got in trouble for showing up at a ski resort with so many beautiful women that even the French police got suspicious. When he was featured on “60 Minutes,” he brandished machine guns and sipped fine wines.

He is the most interesting man in the world, and his name is Mikhail Prokhorov. And now he now owns the New Jersey Nets.

A few hours ago at the Four Seasons hotel in Midtown Manhattan, Prokhorov had his first official press conference as owner of the Nets. There were well over 100 media members assembled, a mind-blowing number considering this was a press conference for a team that finished 49(!) games behind Cleveland this season.

prokhorov1The 6-8 Prokhorov ambled into the room a few minutes before noon, all angles, wearing a gray suit and royal blue tie. He walks like an athlete, his head slightly bowed, his limbs moving creakily, as though he has a disassociated ligament still dangling loose inside his ankle or knee. His buzz cut gave him a resemblance to Anthony Perkins. Prokhorov took a seat in front of the room at a table before a step-and-repeat banner with the Nets logo and the team’s latest marketing phrase, “It’s All New.” Perhaps it is, though the words “New Jersey” weren’t on any of the signage.

“For me,” Prokhorov began, deadpan, “is great pleasure. I am owner of team with the best record in the NBA.” The media chuckled at his joke, and Prokhorov looked around in faux disbelief. “Was I misinformed?” For the next 45 minutes, Prokhorov handled everything thrown at him. He spoke slowly and assuredly, his hands flapping up from the table whenever he talked.

Prokhorov grew up watching the NBA as a teenager in Russia on “video tape recorder,” and he was a big fan of Larry Bird. Once he had the ends, he wanted to own an NBA team because “the NBA is great competition.” And as the first foreign NBA owner, from the US’s former Cold War partner, no less, Prokhorov noted the seismic shift in geopolitical relations over the last few decades with a wink: “I say to Americans, I come in peace.”

Regarding the Nets, Prokhorov said he expects the team to make the Playoffs next season, and he believes they will be a championship team in between one and five seasons. He was circumspect about the Nets finishing just third in the Draft lottery — “Lottery, it’s random” — and flashed his knowledge of NBA history, however unrealistic, when he said, “Few years ago, player drafted third. He did pretty good in his career. His name, Michael Jordan.”

Prokhorov seemed to honestly feel the Nets weren’t far from being contenders. He wants to keep Rod Thorn, let Kiki Vandeweghe walk, hire a coach — he said they have several candidates and he wants to talk to a few Russian coaches, too — and then get involved in free agency, where he felt “pretty sure I can convince the best of the best the Nets is where they need to be.”

“Add team spirit,” Prokhorov, well, added. “Little bit luck, little bit money, we go straight to top.”

Whenever he seemed unsure of what to say, he repeatedly riffed on the theme of “I need to have a few secrets.” It was funny the first time, puzzling by the tenth instance. When a local TV sports anchor asked about how much involvement he planned to have with the front office, Prokhorov grinned and said, “If I tell you I will have to kill you.”

While his English wasn’t perfect and his comedic chops could use honing, you have to give him a lot of credit for coming out and facing the media and at least giving this press conference a shot. As the NBA has run headlong into globalization the last few years, I’ve interviewed several athletes (Yao Ming, Nene) who’d been in the US for a while but still preferred to use an interpreter for interviews, just to be safe. Prokhorov handled himself well, even if some of his vocabulary was a little strange, like when he described himself and Jay-Z as “soulmates.”

Overall, it was a breezy session. The expectations are so low right now, Prokhorov doesn’t have to do much to make the Nets at least sound like winners. He has a clear passion for basketball and winning, and he’s definitely got the money to pour into this withering franchise to rescue it from creeping insignificance. (Although, when asked if he’d be willing to lose money if he won a title, Prokhorov said, “Your question is not very optimistic. I like more to earn money than lose money.”)

If nothing else, Prokhorov has already brought a dash of positive energy. I’ve written several times how, in my mind, the worst thing an NBA team can become is irrelevant, and after going to the Finals consecutively in ‘02 and ‘03, that’s exactly what the Nets had become. Almost overnight, the Nets are now a global franchise that has interest in multiple bases — there were reporters at the press conference today representing outlets in Manhattan, Newark, Brooklyn and Russia.

All of a sudden, the Nets matter. And the most interesting man in the world wants to keep it that way.

“There is only one way to go,” he said, “ and that is up.”

If New Jersey lands John Wall in the Draft, Devin may be good as gone. Rod Thorn tells the Star-Ledger that he’s already fielding calls from around the L about Harris’ availability as a trade chip: “Still, it raises an issue that he has yet to address: If the Nets are ‘leaning toward Wall,’ as Thorn reiterated a few minutes later into a 30-minute chinwag, where does that leave Devin Harris? ‘Well, we have different things to consider, and we’re not there yet,’ The Boss said. ‘Can they play together? We have to discuss it. I know this, we’ll have the fastest backcourt anywhere. But you know what, let’s see what happens on the 18th first. We’ll answer that when the time comes.’ We brought this up, of course, because the calls about Harris have already begun. All of them from friendly folks in need of a point guard if Thorn happens to get the top pick, all of them from peers who are certain the Nets are moving Harris between May 19 and June 24 if Wall drops into their lap. ‘I can’t lie about it,’ Thorn said. ‘I’ve had calls about that.’ If we had to guess, they came from Miami, Indiana and Atlanta – though we don’t know how the Hawks feel about Jeff Teague. Our other guess is this: This will all be about creating more cap space – something that will push the Nets into the 35M range. The others can offer up draft picks, but forget about matching up salaries – all Devin suitors will have to go find a third team to take their garb….er, baggage. So don’t come offering up Michael Beasley or Jeff Foster or even Marvin Williams with the other considerations. Picks and room – full stop. Nothing else matters right now. At least that’s how we’d play it: In for a penny, in for a pound – and there’s no reason why they shouldn’t be shooting for the moon when the calendar turns to July 1.”

There was all kind of coded language when Del abruptly left the team, and now, the truth behind the decision is beginning to come out: “The departure of Del Harris Tuesday night came only two days after his agent, Warren LeGarie, approached Nets president Rod Thorn about the possibility that his client become the team’s head coach. This exchange, according to two NBA officials privy to the conversation who requested anonymity because they are friendly with both sides, took place at Izod Center. LeGarie, one of the game’s heaviest hitters, told Thorn the Nets would be better off letting Harris take over and moving Kiki Vandeweghe back to the front office, if only to begin preparation for 2010-11. According to one of the officials, Thorn interrupted LeGarie with this door-slam: ‘Hold it right there,’ he said. ‘All due respect, he will not be the next head coach here. So if he has any delusions about that, you should let him know it’s not going to happen.’ LeGarie relayed the conversation to Harris, who immediately decided to leave New Jersey, a decision that was reported during Tuesday night’s game.”

No. Will I talk to anyone (in management) about it?’ A pause. A laugh. Sounds like derision. ‘Nah.’ Too bad. Because all he had to do was walk across the gym Thursday and ask the only guy who is capable of putting the uninformed rumors to rest. ‘It’s very, very unlikely that we’d trade Devin. I never say never, but it’s very unlikely that he’s going to be traded,’ Nets president Rod Thorn said as he watched the start of practice at a health club in the city’s financial district. ‘I read the same things you do. There was one thing I saw the other day that was just wrong — about we were talking to Washington about trading Devin for Caron Butler? We never had one conversation with Washington about Caron Butler in five years — period. But you expect speculation, especially when you have a team that has a record like we do.’ That’s about as definitive as Thorn can get, because someone can make him an offer he can’t refuse at any time before the Feb. 18 deadline.”

But they’re not exactly considering him (sportswriter cliché alert) an untouchable anymore. Why should he be tenured, anyway? His jumper’s broken. His defense, by and large, is still poor. He’s injury prone. And he’s still young and talented enough to bring back a very good return, given his contract (at least if you pair it with one of the expiring deals). But even if the Nets think they could do better, we find it very hard to drop all the blame of this 3-34 nightmare on this kid’s head, for a number of reasons.”

Vandeweghe will be announced as the 16th coach in the franchise’s NBA history Tuesday, and then take over the hot seat Friday night against Charlotte at the Izod Center. Del Harris, the distinguished head coach with the Rockets, Bucks and Lakers who retired last summer after a one-year stint on Vinny Del Negro’s staff in Chicago, will be brought in to be Vandeweghe’s top assistant.”

Hours after learning of the firing of their head coach, a depressed (and philosophical) New Jersey Nets team walked into Staples Center in Los Angeles, and made history. Unfortunately for them, it was the ignominious kind.

With their 17th consecutive loss, New Jersey matched the record for most losses to begin a season. It is a mark shared with such forgettable squads as the 1988 Miami Heat and 1999 Los Angeles Clippers.

The Nets must now look to the future, where things don’t figure to get any easier anytime soon. For their yet-be-named new coach, the work ahead is daunting, if not impossible.

The Star-Ledger breaks it down:

The season is lost, consigned into history as a disaster, yet not without talent and assets. Before long, four more guys will get back from injury, but the new guy will have to rework the rotation and find the chemistry that comes with familiarity.

Polish the résumé. There is virtually no chance that anyone from the coaching staff will return this summer, which is just as well — most of them will be working with Frank, who by then will probably have a better job.

There is a host of candidates for Frank’s old gig, though it’s hard to determine why anyone would ever want to step into that minefield. One man who isn’t afraid, is Patrick Ewing.

So, you’ve got that going for you, Nets fans. Best of luck.

His team is off to an 0-12 start, but a plethora of injuries may keep him from losing his job. For now, anyway: “So while he is most supportive of his coach, Thorn uses the word ‘realistic’ when assessing the situation. Be realistic in knowing how tough the situation is, but also be realistic in knowing the losing must somehow end. ‘If this continues, none of us are safe,’ Thorn said, providing neither a vote of confidence nor a condemnation of Frank … Still, should the losing continue, something must happen, although Thorn flatly said don’t look for anything on the immediate horizon. ‘I’m not anticipating anything,’ said Thorn who laughed that “as far as I know” any change would be strictly his call. ‘But I don’t see foresee anything along those lines (coaching change).”‘

The basketball franchise in New Jersey has a new boss and owner. And like any new boss, the guy is likely going to want to make his mark, and do so as soon as humanly possible.

Mikhail Prokhorov is a driven (and wildly successful) person, who will want things done his way. Change will likely start at the top of the organization. According to those close to the team, GM Rod Thorn and friends may soon be looking for work.

From the Star-Ledger:

The Nets basketball operation will undoubtedly feel a major shift in business practice, if only because Prokhorov – once he is approved by the league’s Board of Governors – is not a wallflower. His interest and commitment to CSKA Moscow has produced two Euroleague championships in the last four years.

His aggressive style, however, may not bode well for existing management. Rod Thorn and Kiki Vandeweghe are entering the final years of their contracts, and whether new ownership will allow the 68-year-old Thorn to continue his illustrious career in New Jersey is unknown.

Thorn and Vandeweghe aren’t the only ones who will be looking over their shoulders next season; the entire coaching staff is also at risk, as they enter the final season of their current deals. As the linked article points out, Prokhorov wants his fellow Russians to hold leading positions in the NBA, and is said to be fond of a couple of European coaches.

Of course, no one knows for certain who (if anyone) will get the axe in New Jersey when Prokhorov takes over, but it’s highly unlikely that he’ll sit on his hands and let business run as usual. Thorn, Frank and company would be wise to begin sprucing up those curriculum vitaes.

Lil’ Frank will continue to be gainfully employed by the team, despite some of his players’ feelings towards him: “While he admitted there were a number of ways the team could improve, Thorn ultimately decided that changing the coach wasn’t one of them. The decision coalesced as the week progressed, with Thorn informing Frank of the confirmation Wednesday morning. ‘In my mind, he’s a good coach,’ Thorn said. ‘And if you get rid of a good coach, then you’ve got to get a good coach. He’s done a good job here. I think this past year we weren’t expected to do very well and we ended up doing better than most people expected us to, and our younger players got better, for the most part. So my feeling is that we’re on the right road.’ In 5 ½ years as coach of the Nets, Frank has led the team to a 225-225 record, including an 18-20 mark in four playoff appearances. However, New Jersey has finished the last two seasons with identical 34-48 records, out of the postseason each time.”

To which we say: You just had 82 games to decide whether Frank is the right guy for this team, and you’re still not sure? ‘As Mr. Ratner said, it’s my decision and I’m just trying to think it through and look at all the different factors,’ Rod Thorn said Wednesday. ‘All the facets of our team and go from there.’ And those facets might be? ‘Is the voice still pertinent. Do I think the team will reach whatever its limitations are. Are we still headed in the right direction,’ he said. ‘Those type things.'”

Lawrence Frank’s status as the longest-tenured coach in the East might soon change, to that of a guy looking for work. At least, that’s the impression his boss gave to the local media when asked about Frank’s job security.

Rod Thorn attempted to be diplomatic, but his poker face failed him when discussing Lawrence Frank’s future (or lack thereof) in New Jersey. From the Star-Ledger:

“I can’t guarantee anyone will be here,” Thorn said Tuesday, when asked about Lawrence Frank’s job security. “It’s true. At the end of the year, we’ll assess what’s happened. We’ll have a full assessment, just like we did last year. But I would have said the same thing last year: I can’t guarantee anything or anyone on any level — player, coach or president — will be here.”

Thorn was reminded that he wasn’t asked about a player or the team president, and that he was leaving a very strong inference that Frank — the longest-tenured coach in the Eastern Conference — won’t be asked to return for the final year of his contract when the season ends in 15 days. He did not change his tone.

“All of us are part of what’s transpired this year, starting with myself, down through the players,” Thorn said. “As we do every year, when the season’s over, you look at the big picture, see where you could possibly make changes to get better, and you do what you have to do. There’s nothing to infer. We’re not finishing the way we’d like to finish. At the middle of the year, we were around .500, and since then we’ve struggled. We still have eight games, but we’re not finishing well. And this is what all organizations do, in virtually every area: Determine what went wrong, why it went wrong, how to get it better.”

With the Nets currenty 14 games below .500, this shouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone. Couple that with the fact that the team can’t play defense to save its life – something Thorn is very keen on – and it becomes fairly obvious that change is needed in The Swamp.

Unfortunately for Lawrence Frank, that change likely includes him no longer being in the picture next season.

Not sure if you’ve heard, but today is the NBA’s trade deadline. And Nets GM Rod Thorn is on the clock; at least, that’s the way rival GMs see it.

As far as the rest of the League’s front offices are concerned, the Nets have little choice but to dump Vince Carter’s large salary. The Star-Ledger has more:

The greatest factor is perception: Every GM in the league ended their business day Wednesday believing that Rod Thorn has no other choice but to go into dump mode, and that he’ll be willing to take back virtually nothing but expiring contracts in exchange for Carter. An ESPN report even quoted two of these executives, each of whom stated that the Nets are trying to “give Carter away.”

Remarkably, Thorn didn’t exactly deny it when asked to comment on that perception, but he gave it his own spin. “I’ve always said you do trades for two reasons,” the Nets president said Wednesday night before the Nets faced the Mavericks. “You do them for the present, or you do them for what’s best moving forward. Those are the only two reasons, as far as I’m concerned.”

Business-wise, it makes sense for the Nets to dump Carter and his massive salary (at age 32, he’s slated to make $33 mil over the next two seasons.) They simply can’t afford him.

Should they pull the trigger, the question will then become, Will the fans understand?
