The Los Angeles Clippers have reportedly started discussing trade packages for John Wall, according to NBA insider Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Wall is playing his first year with the Clippers after joining the team as a free agent. He’s currently out after suffering an abdominal injury, but when he’s healthy, the five-time All-Star is averaging 11.4 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 5.2 assists per game on 40.8 percent shooting from the field and 30.3 percent from beyond the arc.

The Clippers (23-22) have legitimate title aspirations, with Kawhi Leonard and Paul George leading the way. Wall was expected to come in and compete for the starting point guard role and has settled in as a strong sixth man who can start in spots. The Clippers have dealt with Leonard’s load management and are still building their chemistry as a team.

Adding frontcourt depth behind Ivica Zubac and Moses Brown could help the Clippers gain some ground in the Western Conference playoff standings. The trade deadline is Feb. 9, and it’ll be interesting to see what moves the Clippers will make their team better.

The Clippers are set to host the Philadelphia 76ers tonight.

Ivica Zubac just added his name to history books with the Los Angeles Clipper on Sunday.

The 25-year-old center posted a historic stat line against the Indiana Pacers after recording 31 points off 14-17 shooting and 29 rebounds, a League-best result for attacking the board this season. The Croatian also had three blocks on Sunday, and his execution defensively with Paul George and Kawhi Leonard in and out of the starting lineup has inspired him to make his case as an elite defensive team candidate.

“Making the NBA All-Defensive team is something I’m really working towards,” Zubac said to AllClippers. “It’s one of my goals coming into the season, just being as best defensively as I can be— I want to show people that I’m capable of that, and for sure, that’s one of my goals.”

As the last pick of the 2016 NBA draft, Zubac was doubted by scouts for what he contributes to the floor defensively. Now manning the middle for the Clippers, the team currently ranks second in defensive rating, while he ranks sixth in blocks and gives up the League-lowest field goal percentage when players try to challenge him at the rim.

Not bad for the Mr. Irrelevant of the 2016 draft. Zubac kept those notes, stating the previous doubters have opened up his motivation towards making the Clippers defense hold a fierce personality.

“Coming into the League, that was always one of the questions about me on the defensive end of the floor,” Zubac said. “Just proving people wrong and proving to myself that I can contribute to defense really means a lot to me. Helping my team be one of the best defenses in the league. It’s something we pride ourselves on here.”

Though this may just be a breakout week for Zubac, it’s pretty impressive to see the big man lead his team to the fifth-best record in the high-powered Western Conference, primarily through his defense and lack of two superstar wings. His specialty at that end may not be as enticing as a Rudy Gobert swat to the fifth stands or the vocal and scrappy difference-making of a Draymond Green, but Zubac has earned the ‘defensive anchor’ title in the Clippers locker room.

The Los Angeles Lakers and the Indiana Pacers have been discussing a potential trade that would send one of the league’s best rim protectors, Myles Turner, to the purple and gold.

The two sides have yet to come up with an agreement, but negotiations may have to pick up soon now that another team has entered the frame. The Lakers’ neighbors, the Los Angeles Clippers, have been rumored to be interested in acquiring Turner as well, according to Bleacher Report’s Eric Pincus.

Clippers big man Moses Brown is the only pure big man after Ivica Zubac on the Clippers’ roster, but head coach Ty Lue has only gone to him for eight games this season. Instead, Marcus Morris has been the go-to backup center for Zubac so far.

With no depth at the center position and not having the services of Kawhi Leonard for most of the early campaign, Los Angeles has still managed to hold on to a record of 8-6, which is good enough for the seventh seed in the Western Conference. The team’s early woes are starting to show that losing Isaiah Hartenstein in the offseason was huge.

Adding Turner to the mix will work wonders for the Clippers. The Pacers’ big man is averaging 17.9 points, 8.7 rebounds, and 3.1 blocks a game. The move would immediately make this Los Angeles team one of the best defenses in the league when healthy, with Turner playing alongside the likes of Leonard and Paul George. Only time will tell if they are willing to pull the trigger on the pursuit.

Los Angeles will be in action tonight as they take on the Dallas Mavericks at 8:30 P.M.

The NBA offseason turns to its next and most chaotic page, the free agency period. Teams and their free agents will be able to sign deals on Thursday at 6 P.M est officially. After Kyrie Irving decided to sign his player option and stay in Brooklyn for at least one more season, there will be plenty of theatrics and drama to keep track of.

So far we have seen the Knicks land, Jalen Brunson, on a massive four-year deal, and Nikola Jokic and Karl-Anthony Towns have re-signed to their teams on supermax deals. Zach LaVine and Bradley Beal will remain with the Bulls and Wizards respectively after signing max deals. Young All-Stars like Ja Morant, Darius Garland, and Zion Williamson have also signed max extensions with their teams.

The Warriors will also look to be putting a different bench mob on the court this coming season after they let Gary Payton II, Otto Porter Jr., and Juan Toscano-Anderson walk away in free agency. The decision seems to imply that the Warriors will invest 100 percent into their win-and-develop model as they keep their championship core intact while empowering Andrew Wiggins, Jordan Poole, Jonathan Kuminga, James Wiseman, and Moses Moody.

Montrezl Harrell is headed to Philly after a tumultuous offseason where he dealt with some legal troubles surrounding marijuana trafficking that was later reduced to misdemeanor possession in a Madison County (KY) courthouse. The charge will be expunged from his record in 12 months if Harrell doesn’t get in any more legal trouble.

James Harden recruited Harrell due to their relationship as teammates on the Rockets. Harrell is expected to bring some toughness and grit to a Philly team that needed a backup big man behind two-time MVP runner-up Joel Embiid.

The defending champs lose another valuable two-way star after Otto Porter Jr. signed with the Raptors on a two-year deal that has a player option.

Ricky Rubio played an integral part in the Cavs’ resurgence to the playoff scene last season before suffering a season-ending torn ACL in December. Rubio was traded to the Pacers near the trade deadline but the Cavs and Rubio were mutually interested in bringing back the former lottery pick point guard.

Zion Williamson, the 2021 All-Star phenom, has locked in on signing a max extension deal with the Pelicans. Williamson missed all of the 2021-2022 season while he recovered from foot surgery. The deal keeps Williamson in New Orleans through 2027-28.

The Golden State Warriors lose one of their best and most versatile defenders after Gary Payton II decided to head towards playing for the Portland Trail Blazers on a three-year deal. Payton led the League in steals per 36 minutes.

Ja Morant is locked in with the Grizzlies after his agent told Woj that he signed a five-year max extension to lead Memphis as its lead guard for the foreseeable future.

Karl Anthony-Towns has reportedly agreed to a four-year super max extension per his agent. KAT’s contract will begin during the 2024-2025 season.

Jalen Brunson has reportedly agreed to the four-year deal that the Knicks offered him. Woj reported that the near-max deal includes a player option on its final season.

Devin Booker and the Phoenix Suns have reportedly finalized a four-year supermax extension that he will likely sign sometime next week. Shams Charania reports that he will be the cover athlete for NBA 2K23.

Nikola Jokic has reportedly signed the richest deal in NBA history after signing a supermax contract extension with the Nuggets on Thursday.

Bradley Beal will stay in the Nation’s Capital after he reportedly signed a five-year max deal.

Jalen Brunson is headed to New York after Shams Charania reported that he intends on signing a four-year deal with the franchise.

According to Alex Schiffer of The Athletic, P.J. Tucker will be pursued by Atlanta, Minnesota, Brooklyn, Chicago. and Philadelphia during the free agency period of the NBA offseason. Furthermore, Schiffer reports that Tucker is unlikely to return to South Beach.

Trent Forrest will be an unrestricted free agent after the Jazz decided not to extend a qualifying offer to the point guard out of Florida State.

Per Marcus Thompson of The Athletic, Juan Toscano-Anderson will be an unrestricted free agent once the free agency period of the NBA offseason begins on Thursday. The 29-year-old became the first Mexican-American to win an NBA title after the Warriors won the 2022 NBA Finals.

“I got a championship with my hometown team,” JTA told Thompson during a phone interview Wednesday night.

“I’m stamped in the Town. I’m stamped in my country. That shit can’t nobody take from me. You’ve got to give a little to get a little. And I gave up playing time to, you know, become a legend. I’m a legend in the Town. I’m a legend in Mexico. And I’m not saying that myself. It’s showing, know what I mean?”

According to Tim Reynolds, the Heat does not have a meeting scheduled with restricted free agent Jalen Brunson on Thursday.

The Cavs are reportedly expected to match offers given to restricted free agent Collin Sexton. Multiple reports say Sexton wants a “starting guard” extension. The Alabama product is coming off a season-ending torn meniscus.

Kemba Walker and the Pistons have reportedly agreed to a contract buyout. Walker will be a free agent after he clears waivers. Walker last played for the Knicks last season before he was traded to the Pistons as New York clears space to sign fellow free agent Jalen Brunson.

Per Anthony Chiang of the Miami Herald, the Heat have guaranteed the contracts of Max Strus, Gabe Stevenson, and Omer Yurtseven as of Thursday morning.

Patty Mills will be exploring his options on the free-agent market after declining to sign his player option with the Nets on Wednesday afternoon.

The Kings won’t be offering a qualifying offer to Donte DiVencenzo, making him an unrestricted free agent.

Lu Dort will be a restricted free agent after the OKC Thunder decided to not sign Durt’s team option for the 2022-23 season, per Shams Charania.

James Harden will hit the free-agent market for the first time in his career but he is likely to re-sign with the 76ers.

Bobby Portis told the Bucks that he’ll decline his player option and will instead become a free agent.

Bradley Beal has made his long-awaited decision and will become a free agent for the first time in his career after declining his player option.

Jae-Sean Tate will be a restricted free agent after the ROckets declined his team option for the 2022-23 season. Shams Charania reports that Houston and Tate are mutually interested in signing a new deal once free agency begins on Thursday.

The Cavaliers have reportedly elected to not offer Moses Brown a qualifying offer to Moses Brown, per Michael Scott of the Hoopshype. The decision allows Brown to enter the free-agent market as an unrestricted free agent.

According to Adrian Wojnarowski, Taurean Prince and the Timberwolves have reportedly agreed to a two-year contract extension.

Ivica Zubac and his reps have reportedly agreed to a three-year extension with the Clippers, per Woj. The Clippers declining to sign his team option led to the agreement with Zubac.

Tony Bradley is reportedly opting into his player option and will remain with the Bulls next season, per Woj.

Paul George has been upgraded to questionable ahead of the Clippers game against the Utah Jazz on Tuesday, according to Ohm Youngmisuk of ESPN.

PG13 has been out since December with a torn UCL in his right elbow. Youngmisuk and Andrew Greif of the Los Angeles Times also reported that George participated in 5-5 practices on Sunday and Monday.

George missed 43 games over the last three months, but the Clippers have fought to rank eighth in the Western Conference playoff seedings. With their spot locked in for the play-in tournament and with George returning as soon as Tuesday, the scrappy Clippers could be a threat to advance into playoffs against an equally plucky Minnesota Timberwolves team.

The Fresno State product averaged 24.1 points, 7.1 rebounds, and 5.5 assists per game before he was sidelined.

The Los Angeles Clippers are one of the more unique teams in the Western Conference approaching the All-Star break.

Despite not having the services of superstar Kawhi Leonard this season and losing Paul George in December to an elbow injury, they now stand at seventh place in the West with a 26-26 record. The team hasn’t closed the door on either player being shut down for the season and is looking for point guard help just in case.

According to Kevin O’Connor of The Ringer, the Clippers are in the market for a point guard in a trade with possibly six players being targets.

“If the Clippers dip below .500, it should come as no big surprise. But this isn’t a lost season without Leonard and George. Not at all. In fact, the Clippers found their identity on defense by examining their roster and trying to find out who will fit with their stars in the years to come.”

Despite all the good vibes on the court this season, no team is ever fully complete. Change is inevitable. And the next step for the Clippers is to find a new point guard.

While Reggie Jackson currently covers the position, the Clippers see him as more of a scorer. What they want by his side is a playmaker. Someone like Fred VanVleet or Kyle Lowry for Leonard in Toronto, or even George Hill was for a young PG-13 in Indiana. L.A. wants a point guard on that level, someone who can manage the game or provide a spark depending on the situation.

So, what kind of point guard can the Clippers reasonably obtain? Over the past few weeks, numerous reports have cited names like Jalen Brunson, Dennis Schröder, Kemba Walker, Goran Dragic, Spencer Dinwiddie, and John Wall as targets.”

The team plan’s on moving potential expiring contracts such as Serge Ibaka, Ivica Zubac (team option for 2022-23 season), or Nicolas Batum (player option for 2022-23)

The Los Angeles Clippers made team history by making Western Conference Finals last season before falling to the eventual conference champion, Phoenix Suns.

The 2021-22 NBA season is being bombarded with the newest COVID-19 variant causing mayhem within multiple teams that have been forced to cancel practices, postpone games and sign emergency hardship exemptions while outbreaks are navigated among several organizations.

Update: On Tuesday, League commissioner Adam Silver announced in an interview with Malika Andrews that the NBA would not be pausing the season for the second season since the 2019-2020 season. Silver also said that the Omricon is ‘beyond dominate’ while constituting 90 percent of positive tests.

REPORT: Per League insider Adrian Wojnarowski, the NBA, and the players union have reached an agreement to lessen the quarantine period for COVID-positive players. Players that tested positive for COVID-19 can clear protocols after five days if their “CT values” are above 30.

If a team has three positive results, two replacement signings are required. For four or more positive tests, three replacement players will be required. Two-way players will reportedly also have no limit to the number of games they can appear in as well. If a team has 13 players available for a game they do not have to sign any players to a hardship exemption.

A game will only be postponed if a team doesn’t have at least eight players available to play. A tactic the NBA frequently utilized last year when officials postponed 31 games. The League has decided to postpone nine games in total.

The Los Angeles Clippers continued their plan at of stockpiling depth at center by signing Isaiah Hartenstein according to ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. It is a training camp deal much like the ones issued to Harry Giles III and Patrick Patterson who signed deals earlier this past week.

The Clippers continue to search for depth at center. Serge Ibaka’s return date is still unknown due to back surgery that kept him out a portion of the regular season and all of the playoffs. Ivica Zubac missed some time with a sprained MCL in his knee.

Hartenstein played last season with the Denver Nuggets and Cleveland Cavaliers. He collected career-best numbers with 8.3 points, 6.0 rebounds and 1.2 blocks in 16 games with Cleveland after being acquired at the trade deadline. But despite showing promise backing up Jarrett Allen, the Cavaliers now are loaded at center. Facing the reality of no playing time, Hartenstein turned down his player option of $1.7 million for next season and opted for free agency.

The Clippers have 14 guaranteed contracts on the roster. Hartenstein will be battling Harry Giles III for the 15th spot on the roster on opening night.

The Los Angeles Clippers continued to add depth to their frontcourt in the upcoming absence of Kawhi Leonard by signing forward Harry Giles III to a non-guaranteed deal according to Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Last season, Giles played with the Portland Trail Blazers on a one-year minimum deal. In 38 games he averaged 2.8 points and 3.5 rebounds in 9.2 minutes. Giles will try to make a Clippers squad hoping to stay in championship contention despite their superstar forward, Kawhi Leonard slated to miss a significant portion of the season with a partial ACL tear in his knee.

Giles will look for minutes behind veteran big men Ivica Zubac and Serge Ibaka at the center position if he can make the regular season roster. The team currently has 14 players on guaranteed contracts.

Giles joins fellow former Duke players Luke Kennard and recently signed Justise Winslow on the Clippers roster.

Perhaps their most underrated acquisition of the offseason is Nicolas Batum, who has given the Clippers extremely productive numbers when he take the floor. On the flip side, after extending Luke Kennard to a new deal, he’s failed to make much of a positive impact in Los Angeles.

The Clippers have a lot to prove in the upcoming season. Although they were able to sign Paul George to a long-term extension, they still need to convince Kawhi Leonard to do the same.

We broke down the Clippers’ depth chart for the 2020-21 season below. We’ve also previously published a summary of the Clippers’ offseason.

Point Guard
Patrick Beverley
Reggie Jackson
Shooting Guard
Paul George
Lou Williams
Luke Kennard
Terance Mann
Small Forward
Kawhi Leonard
Nicolas Batum
Power Forward
Marcus Morris
Patrick Patterson
Daniel Oturu
Mfiondu Kabengele
Center
Serge Ibaka
Ivica Zubac

Biggest Questions

  • Is Serge Ibaka the perfect fit? Last season, as great as Montrezl Harrell was, he wasn’t able to stretch the floor late in games. Ibaka has the ability to create space in the lane for drivers as well as anchor the backside of their defense.
  • Can Luke Kennard stay healthy? Just a day before their season opener, the Clippers signed Kennard to a fairly large deal, even without ever playing a single regular season game in a Clippers uniform. He’s had a history of injuries but when healthy is worth every penny.

The 3-1 jokes may be over for the NBA Twitterverse but the Los Angeles Clippers’ loss to the Denver Nuggets in the 2020 NBA Playoffs shouldn’t stop haunting them. Tabbed as the favorites to win the 2020 NBA Finals after signing stars Kawhi Leonard and Paul George, the Clippers enter the offseason with more questions to answer than any other contender.

Where other contenders will simply be looking to refine their roster or bring back key free agents, the Clippers have a laundry list of offseason chores to complete: addressing team-wide chemistry concerns; developing the dynamic between Kawhi and PG13; handling the free agency of reigning Sixth Man of the Year Montrezl Harrell.

The draft wouldn’t have helped LA’s little brother franchise with those tasks anyways but with only a late second round pick in the 2020 NBA Draft, all the Clippers could do is add depth at the backend of the roster or hope for a talented prospect to fall.

Clippers Draft Needs

Although the Clippers fell short of their goal in 2019-20, they remain one of the most dominant teams in the entire league.

As a result, what LAC needs to use the draft for is covering minor blemishes, like their depth at point guard and small forward. Their depth at power forward could also be in question with Harrell and veteran Marcus Morris set to enter free agency.

Lastly, ranked 13th in opponent’s points per game last season despite an abundance of staunch perimeter defenders, the Clippers may also a defensive specialist at center.

Exceptions Available

  • Non-Taxpayer Mid-Level Exception – $9,258,000
  • Bi-Annual Exception – $3,623,000

Key Offseason Decisions

  • Will JaMychal Green pick up his player option? Green’s PO is for $5M. In a normal year, he could probably get more than that, or least sign a longer deal as a free agent. Given the uncertainty of this season, and LA’s status as a contender, it’s likely Green opts in.
  • Will the team keep Joakim Noah? Noah had little impact after joining the Clippers. He’s proven he can still play as a solid backup center. This one probably comes down to who the Clippers hire as a coach and his feelings on Noah’s chances to contribute.

Projected Team Salary

$150,824,219

Things are pretty straight for the Clippers. Do they keep Joakim Noah at $2.7M? And will JaMychal Green opt in? The answer to both of those are probably yes. Then all eyes turn to a new deal for Montrezl Harrell, retaining Marcus Morris and filling out the rest of the bench with veterans. (@KeithSmithNBA)

Cap Space Forecast

-$41,684,219 (14th out of 30). $21,316,063 under the Luxury Tax.

The Los Angeles Clippers were winning ball games prior to the shut down – they’d won seven of their final 10 – but weren’t getting any particularly memorable performances from the individuals on the roster.

Kawhi Leonard, Paul George and Lou Williams were averaging fewer points in March than they had previously but the biggest adjustments were being made by Reggie Jackson and Marcus Morris.

Jackson and Morris joined the Clippers in February and immediately signed up for significantly different roles than what they had filled previously. Jackson went from being one of several go-to offensive options on the Detroit Pistons to a reserve on the Clips, while Morris went from leading a wayward New York Knicks team to a supplemental role in Los Angeles.

Each week here at SLAM we’re going to empty out the notebook and give you some facts and figures about each NBA team. These are meant to give you a one-stop shop for what’s been happening around the league and highlight a few things you may have missed! You can find the Eastern Conference notes here.

Last Week’s Notebooks: East || West

  • Dallas Mavericks – The Mavs are about as healthy as they’re going to be the rest of the season. Luka Doncic is dealing with some right ankle and left thumb soreness, but is playing through it. That’s good news for Dallas, as Doncic and Kristaps Porzingis have developed some great chemistry. The Mavericks are only two games out of the fourth spot in what is shaping up to be a wild finish in the Western Conference.
  • Denver Nuggets – Denver added Troy Daniels after he was cut by the Los Angeles Lakers and that should just about finish the Nuggets roster. Mike Malone was already able to go 10-deep in his rotation, but with Daniels and Noah Vonleh, he’s now got some experience vets behind his main guys. Denver is only a game behind the LA Clippers for the two seed, but they also have to keep an eye behind them as Houston and Utah have closed to with 2.5 games.
  • Golden State Warriors – Steph Curry is back and Steve Kerr says that is a springboard into next season for the Warriors. Kerr will get a look at Curry playing with Draymond Green and Andrew Wiggins over the last 20 or so games. It won’t make a bit of difference for the rest of the season, but it could help lay a nice foundation into the offseason and the start a bounce-back season for Golden State next year.
  • Houston Rockets – Just when it looked like the Rockets cracked the small-ball code with six wins in a row, they lost at the Knicks and got blown out at home by the Clippers. No one needs to overreact, as the Knicks game seemed like a fluke loss and the Clippers are really good, but a couple of troubling items did emerge. New York scored 64 points in the paint and LA defended the arc well, holding Houston to just 7-of-42 shooting. For the Rockets to work with this makeup, they need to hold their own inside and hit shots. It was either one of those weeks for Houston, or signs of trouble.
  • LA Clippers – The Clippers seem to have settled on their playoff rotation and it’s deep with solid NBA talent. Kawhi Leonard, Paul George, Patrick Beverley and Marcus Morris are a tough group to score on. Ivica Zubac can be productive in the right matchups in the starting group as well. And when Doc Rivers goes to his bench, he’s got Lou Williams, Montrezl Harrell, Landry Shamet, Reggie Jackson and JaMychal Green. That group brings a lot of offense to the table. That’s hard to match for any other team in the league.
  • LA Lakers – Not enough is being made of LeBron James leading the NBA in assists at 10.7 per game. The days of “Can LeBron average a triple-double?” are gone, especially with Anthony Davis gobbling up so many rebounds, but James has become the NBA’s preeminent playmaker. It’s almost gotten to a point where teams might be better of letting James shoot, as he’s under 50% from the floor for the first time in five years. Oh, and the Lakers will soon add Dion Waiters to the mix for some additional bench scoring. Waiters will be on a short leash, but seems motivated to make it work in LA.
  • Memphis Grizzlies – Just when it looked like Memphis’ playoff hopes were teetering on the edge, the Grizzlies hammered the Lakers and then won two-straight on the road by 39 points apiece. Now Memphis is back to .500 on the season and has pushed their lead for the West’s last playoff spot back to 3.5 games. The baby bears might just do this thing.
  • Minnesota Timberwolves – Ryan Saunders said the Wolves hope to have an update on Friday for Karl-Anthony Towns’ eventual return from a fractured left wrist. The Wolves have 21 games left and would love to see a chunk of them with Towns playing alongside a bunch of new teammates, including D’Angelo Russell and Malik Beasley.
  • New Orleans Pelicans – The Pelicans have lost three-straight games as of this writing and have fallen five games behind the Grizzlies. Just as important, there are now three teams between New Orleans and Memphis. The Pels still have an easy closing schedule, but that’s a lot to overcome. And sharpshooter JJ Redick is still sidelined for another week or so. Starting to look like it might be next year for this group’s playoff debut.
  • Oklahoma City Thunder – OKC is now just 1.5 games out of homecourt advantage in the playoffs. That still isn’t enough to stop swirl around Chris Paul’s future. Reports surfaced this week that the New York Knicks are monitoring Paul and could consider a trade for him this summer. It’s probably not a coincidence that Paul’s former agent, Leon Rose, now runs the Knicks. And this report came after one that the Chicago Bulls want to hire Sam Presti to run their basketball operation. Despite it all, the Thunder just keep quietly winning games.
  • Phoenix Suns – Forward Kelly Oubre Jr. is likely out for the season. He underwent a procedure to repair a torn meniscus and will be re-evaluated in four weeks. That timeline is almost to the end of the season. With the Suns out of the playoff picture, they should be cautious and keep Oubre out. Yet again, it’s “Wait till next year” time in Phoenix.
  • Portland Trail Blazers – Damian Lillard is back for Portland and the Blazers are about the same place as they were when he strained his groin. The Trail Blazers are 3.5 games behind the Grizzlies for the eighth spot in the West. Portland has a far easier closing schedule than Memphis, and may eventually get Jusuf Nurkic and/or Zach Collins back in the lineup. That’d go a long way towards helping make up that difference in the standings.
  • Sacramento Kings – Sacramento has won six of their last eight games to push back in the playoff picture. They’re four games behind Memphis, but have a pretty easy schedule to wrap up the season. Unfortunately, the Kings have two games left against the Lakers. Sacramento has to hope LA is in coast mode for those April matchups.
  • San Antonio Spurs – The Spurs are clinging to playoff life, as they’ve fallen four games behind the Grizzlies now. San Antonio’s frontcourt is a mess, as LaMarcus Aldridge has missed four straight games with a shoulder injury with no update on a potential return date. Jakob Poeltl is also on the shelf, as he’s got a sprained MCL in his right knee and will be out 2-4 weeks. That leaves Trey Lyles and untested youngsters manning the middle for the Spurs as they try and extend their playoff streak to 23 years.
  • Utah Jazz – Utah has seemingly righted the ship, as they’ve won three games in a row as of this writing. Despite all the recent turbulence, the Jazz are just 3.5 games out of the two-seed. On the flip side, they’re only two games away from the seventh spot in the West. Right now, Quin Snyder is focused on getting his finally-healthy roster to fit together. The early returns were bumpy, but guys seem to be figuring out their roles. That’s good news for Utah heading into the postseason.

With the new year now finally upon us, speculation ahead of the 2020 NBA Trade Deadline is in full swing. Whether Los Angeles Clippers fans are in consensus about what the team ought to do before the Feb. 6, 2020 cut off or not, anticipation mounts across all fanbases that there will be fireworks.

In this post, just one of a series of 30, we’ll break down the reports that have started to trickle out about Clippers players that may or may not be on the move. While there’s no guarantee when it comes to a league as wild as the modern NBA, it doesn’t hurt to brush up on each squad’s roster as the deadline draws near.

Players Unlikely To Be Traded

  • Paul George
  • Kawhi Leonard
  • Patrick Beverley
  • Lou Williams

The Clippers won the NBA free agent lottery but this was not a case of simple luck (OK, being in gorgeous Southern California certainly helps). The franchise developed a strong culture and prepared themselves to have financial resources to add someone like Kawhi Leonard and the desirable assets to trade for someone like Paul George. Adding both stars to a nucleus that made the playoffs last season created a contender and the Clippers aren’t going to completely overhaul the team at the deadline, which means core role players like Patrick Beverley and Lou Williams likely aren’t going anywhere.

Biggest Name Available On Market

  • Maurice Harkless

It’s no secret that the Clippers are looking for a center, as the team has concerns about possibly facing Rudy Gobert or Nikola Jokic in the postseason. The team is also looking for a defensive wing, per Sean Deveney of Heavy.com. In either event, it’s hard to imagine a deal without Maurice Harkless and his $11.0M salary being involved.

Logical Trade Pieces

  • Montrezl Harrell
  • Ivica Zubac

If the Clippers are going to try and acquire a center, it’s only logical to assume that they may send out one of their big men in the deal. Montrezl Harrell, who is making $6M this season and will be a free agent after likely holds the most trade value of the two. However, Ivica Zubac could probably net a decent asset. He’s sporting a 20.5 player efficiency rating this year and is on a team-friendly deal that will pay him just $21M through the 2021-22 season.

Trades Are Possible

  • Rodney McGruder
  • JaMychal Green
  • Jerome Robinson
  • Landry Shamet
  • Mfiondu Kabengele
  • Patrick Patterson
  • Derrick Walton Jr.
  • Terance Mann

Rodney McGruder slipped from Miami’s grasp during the final week of the 2018-19 campaign. Los Angeles has him under contract through next season. 🏀 JaMychal Green took less money to re-sign with the Clippers this past offseason. It’s hard to envision the team trading him. 🏀 22-year-old Jerome Robinson could be on the move as a prospect that rival teams are intrigued with. He was the No. 13 overall pick in the 2018 draft. 🏀 Landry Shamet has shown promise through two half seasons with the Clippers. He’s made 39.5% of his treys, though if he’s going to play a role in the playoffs, the team will need more from him. 🏀 Mfiondu Kabengele was the No. 27 overall pick in the 2019 draft. He’s appeared in 10 games for the Clippers this season. 🏀 Patrick Patterson signed with the club this past offseason. He’s on a veteran’s minimum deal. 🏀 Derrick Walton Jr. has been a pleasant surprise for Los Angeles. He’s played in 23 games for the club with most of his time coming as he filled in for the Clippers’ various injuries. 🏀 Terance Mann has appeared in 30 games for the club. He’s also spent considerable time in the G League with the Agua Caliente Clippers.

Veteran center Joakim Noah was among the finalists to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers as a replacement for the injured DeMarcus Cousins. Now, Shams Charania of The Athletic reports, Noah is expected to join their crosstown rival, the Los Angeles Clippers.

The Clippers have just 14 guaranteed contracts on their roster as training camp approaches, leaving a possible window for Noah to impress the franchise and evnetually stick with the squad through to the regular season.

Noah’s stock dropped over the last few seasons when injuries severely limited what he was able to do as a member of the New York Knicks but the 34-year-old was a pleasant surprise for the young Memphis Grizzlies in 2018-19.

In the 36 games where he played at least 10 minutes for the Grizz, Noah averaged a respectable 7.9 points and 6.2 rebounds per, all while providing the high level of energy that made him a star with the Chicago Bulls.

There’s no guarantee that Noah can turn his forthcoming workouts with the franchise into an actual contract offer but he’d be an interesting addition to a frontcourt that already includes Ivica Zubac and Montrezl Harrell.

The Los Angeles Clippers have agreed to re-sign 22-year-old center Ivica Zubac, Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN writes. The big man arrived with the Clippers after a mid-season deal with the Lakers and immediately earned the starting nod.

In 25 games with the Clips, Zubac averaged 9.4 points and 7.7 rebounds. That he was able to produce when called upon shouldn’t come as a surprise, in spot starts with the Lakers prior to the deal he showed similar value.

In games where Zubac played at least 20 minutes, he averaged 13.0 points and 8.5 rebounds. While he won’t likely see the same amount of offensive touches with inbound Clippers Paul George and Kawhi Leonard dominating the ball, he could still be a bargain add on a four-year, $28 million deal.

Zubac was signed with Bird rights.

We’ve seen a flurry of free agency activity since June 30, all listed and detailed in our 2019 NBA Free Agency Tracker, but not all players have found their homes for 2019-20.

The Kawhi Leonard domino fell in the wee hours of Saturday morning, which could open the flood gates for the final wave of activity. What might that wave actually look like though?

Below are the twenty most impactful free agents, many of whom could be excellent late additions to teams bracing up for a wild NBA campaign. Disagree? Hit us up in the comments below or chase me on Twitter (@AustinKent).

While Kawhi Leonard was expected to meet with teams once free agency began, he will not take any meetings on June 30, per Chris Haynes. Leonard will “ramp up the process” over the next couple days.

The Lakers, Clippers, Raptors, and Knicks appear to be the top contenders to sign Leonard, though with the Knicks missing out on Durant, they are severely behind the three other teams in Leonard Sweepstakes.

Below we’ve summarized and outlined various reports that have come in about the superstar’s potential landing spot. Other teams may be interested in Leonard but these are the teams that we feel have the most traction.

As news breaks and we learn more about where Leonard stands regarding free agency, we’ll update this briefing. Similarly, if other teams appear to gain ground in their own pursuit of Leonard, we’ll add them here.

TeamProj. Salary CapMeeting?
Los Angeles Clippers$52,928,034 Scheduled
Los Angeles Lakers$32,021,519 Scheduled
New York Knicks$35,620,119Reported
Toronto Raptors$0Scheduled

Los Angeles Clippers

Salary Cap Room: $52,928,034*

The Clippers have the ability to sign two max players, though they haven’t quite done that yet. The above figure assumes the team renounces the rights to Patrick Beverley, Wilson Chandler, JaMychal Green, and Garrett Temple.

Other decisions, such as retaining or renouncing Ivica Zubac’s rights, likely won’t be made until the franchise secures a pair of stars (or finds other reasons to use the cap room). The Clippers will likely need to trade one of their players with a guaranteed salary to get to two max slots, though they should have no problem finding a taker for any of their players on a sizeable salary.

It’s unclear if pairing Leonard with another star will be a prerequisite for him signing with the Clippers. Kevin Durant and Leonard have discussed scenarios where they play together and Los Angeles would be a strong possibility if they decide to team up. The franchise certainly hopes to land two stars.

Doc Rivers & Co. will meet with Leonard before the Raptors get a chance to pitch him. The Clippers were, at times this season, seen as the favorite for Leonard’s services, though their cross-town rivals’ acquisition of Anthony Davis complicates matters. What was once seen as the smarter, safer, more responsible franchise in Southern California may once again be second place in its own city.

Los Angeles Lakers

Salary Cap Room: $32,021,519*

The Lakers have emerged as a legitimate contender for Leonard’s services. Leonard will begin his free agency tour in Los Angeles and may have multiple meetings that are Lakers related. Magic Johnson, who was previously the team’s president of basketball operations, will not be permitted in the franchise’s official pitch but could have a separate meeting with Leonard.

New York Knicks

Salary Cap Room: $34,871,920*

Like the Clippers, the Knicks have the ability to easily carve out two max slots but have yet to do so. Renouncing DeAndre Jordan and Mario Hezonja will give them ability to sign someone with Leonard’s experience and a co-star.

Leonard and Durant have discussed playing together the Knicks alongside the Clippers have been cited as the main possibilities. Durant has long-been rumored to be heading to the Big Apple. The Knicks have been pursuing a meeting with Leonard and it appears one is in the making, though no time is set as of this writing.

*Cap room is based on off a $109,000,000 projected salary cap for the 2019/20 season.

Toronto Raptors

Projected Cap Room: $0

Leonard is expected to allow Toronto to make the final pitch to him and the franchise is a serious contender for his services next season. If he re-signs with the Raptors, it could be on a short-term, max contract, likely with a player option within it. Toronto would be happy to allow Leonard whatever deal gives them a chance to run it back.

76ers 131, Nets 115 (76ers lead 2-1)

Despite Joel Embiid being a late scratch due to a nagging knee injury, the 76ers regained home court advantage with a dominant outing against the Nets, making them the first team since the 2003 Mavericks to score back-to-back 130 point games in the playoffs. Paced by playoff career highs from Ben Simmons (31 points) and Tobias Harris (29 points), as well as 26 points from sharpshooter J.J. Redick, the 76ers were too much for the Nets to handle. Also, Simmons shot 9-11 in the half court. Thought we should mention that.

Brooklyn, a team that prizes themselves on their 3 point marksmanship, only converted a meager 20.5% percent of their attempts from beyond the arc, compared to the 76ers’ 40.7%. On the bright side for the Nets, D’Angelo Russell and Caris LeVert each dropped 26 points in the loss, and LeVert looked like his old self.

Game 4 is on Saturday.

Nuggets 108, Spurs 118 (Spurs lead 2-1)

World, meet Derrick White.

The second-year Spurs guard had a dominant performance against the hapless Nuggets, scoring a career-high 36 points, grabbing 5 boards, dishing 5 assists and swiping 3 steals on a ridiculously efficient 15-21 from the field. “DeMarvelous” DeRozan (I’ll show myself out) also chipped in 25 points.

For the Nuggets, Nikola Jokic had another respectable outing (22 points, 7 assists and 8 rebounds), with Malik Beasley adding 20 from the bench, but ultimately, it wasn’t enough to withstand the Spurs and their excellent home crowd.

Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go day-dream about a Derrick White-DeJounte Murray backcourt next season.

Warriors 132, Clippers 105 (Warriors lead 2-1)

After blowing a humiliating 31 point lead in Game 2, the Warriors made quick work of the Clippers this time. Kevin Durant, who was held to only 21 points and nine turnovers last game, was all business at Staples Center, scoring a game-high 38 points. Stephen Curry also contributed 21 points on 7-11 from the field in only 20 minutes.

It was always going to be a difficult task to beat an angry Warriors squad, but the Clippers did not do themselves any favors by shooting a lackluster 36.6% from the field and 21.9% from beyond the arc as a team. To make matters worse, Ivica Zubac was the only Clippers starter that reached double-digits in scoring, and most of his points came in garbage time.

Heat 94 (39-43), Nets 113 (42-40)

Dwyane Wade’s One Last Dance ended with a bang. The guard showed out in Brooklyn, with LeBron James, Chris Paul and Carmelo Anthony there to watch, racking up a triple-double of 25 points, 11 rebounds and 10 assists. He got the assist on a pass to none other than fellow Heat veteran and friend, Udonis Haslem.

After the game, Wade was embraced by his Banana Boat family.

Mavericks 94 (33-49), Spurs 105 (48-34)

Dirk Nowitzki ended his storied career with one last jumper at the top of the key, the perfect cap on a 21-year legacy in Dallas. He finished his final game in the league with 20 points and 10 rebounds.

Pacers 135 (48-34), Hawks 134 (29-53)

Taurean Prince hit a 3-pointer with 2.1 seconds left to put Atlanta up two — but they didn’t come away with the win. The Hawks fouled on a 3-point shot on the ensuing possession, and Indiana’s Edmond Sumner hit all three shots to give the Pacers win No. 48 on the season.

Magic 122 (42-40), Hornets 114 (39-43)

Charlotte entered the night with playoff hopes but they ultimately fell short. Terrence Ross led Orlando with 35 points in the road win. Kemba Walker put up 43 points as his team’s season ended early.

Pistons 115 (41-41), Knicks 89 (17-65)

LeBron James says the Los Angeles Lakers place an “unfair” burden on their young core.

No other NBA team relys on inexperienced players to the degree the Lakers do, according to James.

LeBron is the only vet who inked a long-term deal last summer for the Purple and Gold, and they failed to land another big-time free agent or pull off a blockbuster trade prior to last month’s deadline.

Per The LA Times:

“You have four guys in our top eight rotation that you have to really rely on, and it’s unfair to them to ask for so much when they’re in their second or third year,” James said. “We have Zo [Lonzo Ball], Josh [Hart], Kuz [Kyle Kuzma] and B.I. [Brandon Ingram]. And we had Zu [Ivica Zubac] at the time. That’s like five out of our top nine guys that we rely on, and they’re in their first and second year. You can’t find one other team in our league right now that has to rely on that much every single night from their young guys that’s in their first or second year.”

When James signed, he said he understood many of his teammates weren’t at a point in their careers yet where they could be key pieces for a championship contender. The stark reality of the season likely ending without a playoff berth has felt starker for James.

Further complicating matters were a groin injury that kept James out for five weeks and a trade deadline that caused unrest in the locker room as the Lakers aggressively tried to trade for Anthony Davis, offering all of their young players in different packages.

“It’s unfair to those guys for us to continue to — we want them to learn, we want them to learn, we want them to learn — I want them to learn,” James said. “But also we have to understand that they’re young as well and they’re going to make mistakes. You just try to limit the mistakes as much as possible. You look at all of the 16 teams right now, the best teams in our league right now, just look at the guys they rely on every single night to be able to come through for them. If they have a young guy it’s probably one or two of them. So it’s been tough on us. It’s been tough on us.”

Los Angeles Lakers owner Jeanie Buss says the media reported “fake news” about her team’s failed attempt to acquire Anthony Davis prior to the NBA trade deadline last month.

Buss insists it’s simply not true that the Lakers were willing to give up their “entire roster for a certain player.”

Buss says the rumors damaged team chemistry.

Per ESPN:

“There’s always a love-hate relationship with the media when you’re on this side of the business,” Buss said during one of the multiple panel discussions that she took part in at the MIT/Sloan Analytics Conference in Boston on Saturday. “The media, for example, there was a lot of hype and things written about a potential trade leading into the trade deadline — all of it false. But it got a lot of coverage.

“There’s damage that’s done to team chemistry when players have to read about all this — that is, to me, it’s irresponsible and frustrating because it puts feelings that your players have [at risk] and you can’t avoid it. It’s part of the landscape that we deal with.”

On a different panel discussion, Buss also said, in part, “The biggest challenge for [us is] the ‘fake news’ about how we were supposedly trading our entire roster for a certain player, which is completely not true. But those stories leak out and it hurt our young players. It wasn’t fair. [Lakers president Magic Johnson] got in front of that, and I think we’re back on the right track. Hopefully, that will allow us to make a playoff push coming up here.”

Los Angeles offered a package to New Orleans that included Josh Hart, Ivica Zubac, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Lonzo Ball and two first-round picks, sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski. It is unclear if there were any reports that the team was, indeed, going to trade its entire roster for Davis.

“On my side, it seems like there’s more things written and put out there that have no backup, nobody’s name associated with the story or the quote, and an unnamed source. It’s frustrating,” Buss said at the conference in describing the current sports media landscape. “I would rather see that not happen. I would rather see more responsibility with the media and maybe just taking it back a little bit to think about who it’s affecting when they do write lies and conjecture and made-up stuff just to get clicks and followers. It’s really not right.”

Jayson Tatum has reportedly been “discussed extensively” as a possible trade chip in the Anthony Davis sweepstakes.

Boston continues to aggressively push New Orleans’ front-office, but can only deal for AD this summer due to Kyrie Irving being on the books.

The Celtics appear undeterred by signals from the Davis camp that he doesn’t want to play for them.

Per The Athletic:

This latest Lakers-Celtics subplot would be dead by now if [Danny] Ainge had been scared off, but sources say Boston — which can’t trade for Davis until this summer because of the well-chronicled “Rose Rule” — is continuing its complicated pursuit of the five-time All-Star in spite of the message being sent through various channels that he doesn’t want to play there. A source with knowledge of the talks said the potential centerpiece in a Pelicans package, 20-year-old Celtics small forward Jayson Tatum, has been discussed extensively by the two teams and is expected to be a major part of the talks when June rolls around.

So long as Davis isn’t in purple and gold by then.

The Lakers, who have reportedly been asked to include as many as eight draft picks along with their entire young core of Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart and Ivica Zubac, must now weigh all these scenarios that will forge their future.

LeBron James attempted to downplay swirling rumors about a possible trade for Anthony Davis.

James says he doesn’t play “much fantasy basketball.”

And it may turn out to be just that: a fantasy.

The Los Angeles Lakers have reportedly pulled out of trade talks for AD due to “outrageous” demands by the New Orleans Pelicans.

Per The LA Times:

Magic Johnson, the Lakers’ president of basketball operations, told New Orleans general manager Dell Demps on Tuesday morning that the Lakers had made their best offer, were not willing to add anything else and were done with negotiations, said the person who was not authorized to speak publicly on the matter.

The person said the Lakers were not willing to give up the six to eight draft picks the Pelicans sought for Davis.

The Lakers agreed to send their entire young core of Lonzo Ball, Kyle Kuzma, Brandon Ingram, Josh Hart and Ivica Zubac to the Pelicans, as well as veteran guard Kentavious Caldwell-Pope, the two people said. The Lakers’ final offer did include two first-round draft picks, they said. Los Angeles also offered to give New Orleans the salary-cap relief it wanted by acquiring Solomon Hill, who has another year left on hiscontract after this season for $12.7 million.

“They wanted more and more and more,” one person said. “There was no more to give. They had cap relief with Hill being in the deal. But the more they wanted, the more it became outrageous and unrealistic.”

The Los Angeles Lakers are determined to trade for Anthony Davis before Thursday’s trade deadline, and their first offer for The Brow was leaked last night by ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

An offer including only two out of the Lakers young core of Lonzo Ball, Brandon Ingram, Kyle Kuzma, Josh Hart and Ivica Zubac must have been underwhelming for the Pelicans, who believed the offers were “lowball”, per The Athletic’s Shams Charania.

A good negotiator never extends his best offer early, and the Lakers two reported rivals in the Davis sweepstakes have taken a step back recently. The Knicks traded away their most valuable asset in Kristaps Porzingis on Thursday, while Anthony Davis Sr lambasted the way Boston treated former guard Isaiah Thomas in a text to ESPN’s Ramona Shelburne.

“Boston…I would never want my son to play for Boston after what they done to Isaiah Thomas…NO LOYALTY…guy gives his heart and soul and they traded him…anyone can print that,” Davis Sr said.

Montrezl Harrell led the way with 25 points off the bench as the Clippers defeated the visiting Kings. Tobias Harris had 18 points and Lou Williams posted a double-double (12 points, 10 assists) as the Clippers have won the last three games. Shai Gilgeous-Alexander, Patrick Beverley and Avery Bradley all finished in double figures.

Cavaliers 104 (10-41), Bulls 101 (11-39)

Cleveland, who dropped 18 of their last 19 games, got a win on the road in Chicago. Alec Burkes posted a team-high 18 points as Matthew Dellavedova and Jordan Clarkson chipped in 34 bench points. The Cavaliers went on a 12-2 run in the fourth to push the lead to eight points.

Rockets 103 (29-20), Magic 98 (20-30)

James Harden went on another scoring barrage, dropping 40 points in Houston. This was Harden’s 23rd straight game with 30 or more points. Chris Paul, who made his return to the starting lineup, had 12 points and six dimes.

Raptors 123 (37-15), Mavericks 120 (22-27)

Kawhi Leonard scored 33 points and grabbed 11 rebounds, Kyle Lowry had 19 points and Pascal Siakam had 14 points. Despite the loss, Mavs rookie Luka Doncic became the youngest player in NBA history to record a 30-point triple-double (35 points, 12 rebounds, 10 assists).

Jazz 125 (29-22), Timberwolves 111 (24-26)

Donovan Mitchell’s 29 points helped the Jazz rally past the Wolves. The Jazz shot 71 percent from the field as the team has won its ninth of its last 10 games. Ricky Rubio had 18 points and eight assists.

Spurs 132 (29-22), Wizards 119 (21-28)

As DeMar DeRozan missed another game, LaMarcus Aldridge had another 30-point performance to go with the W. Seven Spurs players finished in double digits as David Bertans had a season-high 21 points. The Spurs’ bench also outscored the Wizards 54-27.

Heat 106 (24-24), Knicks 97 (10-38)

With Carmelo Anthony in attendance, Dwyane Wade had 15 points and 10 rebounds off the bench. Wayne Ellington was the Heat’s leading scorer with 19 points. The Knicks’ bench put points on the board as four reserves finished in double digits.

Lakers 116 (25-24), Suns 102 (11-40)

Ivica Zubac filled in for a missing Tyson Chandler, scoring 24 points and grabbing 16 boards. Kentavious Caldwell-Pope had 24, too, and Brandon Ingram put up 22. Off the bench, Lance Stephenson scored 17, including back-to-back triples down the stretch.

Thunder 118 (31-18), Bucks 112 (35-13)

Paul George was in his bag on Sunday afternoon, scoring 36 points to lead the Thunder over the Bucks. Russell Westbrook messed around and had a triple-double (13 points, 13 rebounds, 11 assists) for his 16th of the season. George scored 21 first-half points and hit a clutch three-pointer late in the game. He also put the Greek Freak on a poster.

Referees admittedly blew the call Thursday night when they whistled Lonzo Ball for a shooting foul on Russell Westbrook at the end of regulation, awarding the Thunder guard three free-throws to tie the game and force overtime.

LeBron James, who was not on the road trip due to a groin strain, chimed in questioning the call.

Led by Kyle Kuzma‘s game-high 32 points, the Los Angeles Lakers beat OKC 138-128 in the extra session.

Per the AP:

“Upon being able to see the review of the play, we realized that the illegal contact happened prior to his upward motion, so it should have been a side-out,” [NBA crew chief Tom] Washington said.

Ball took responsibility for the situation.

“It’s my fault that he hit the free throws,” he said. “Maybe I should have fouled him earlier. But I had to wash it off.”

Ball bounced back with five points, two rebounds and an assist in overtime. [Luke] Walton was impressed with his second-year point guard’s overall effort, especially late in the game.

“For him to do that against Westbrook — I’m sure a player he watched growing up as one of the great point guards in our league — not only to score those points, but a couple of big assists to Zu coming down the lane, a big-time rebound. He can do a little bit of everything,” Walton said.

Knicks 100 (10-34), Wizards 101 (19-26)

The Wizards came from behind to down the Knicks in London, England as Thomas Bryant scored with two seconds to go due to a goaltending call on Alonzo Trier.

Bryant finished the day with 26 points and nine boards while Emmanuel Mudiay scored 25 on 11-for-18 shooting from the field for New York.

Suns 109 (11-35), Raptors 111 (34-13)

Pascal Siakam (10 points, 12 rebounds, five assists) finished at the buzzer to lead the Raptors past the Suns. Eight Phoenix players scored at least nine points as Kawhi Leonard had the night off.

Devin Booker scored a game-high 30 points for Phoenix.

Bulls 105 (10-35), Nuggets 135 (30-14)

Lauri Markkanen scored a game-high 27 (15 of which came in the first quarter), but it wasn’t enough to overcome an electric shooting night for Denver (52.1 percent from the field, 50% from 3). Nikola Jokic had 18 points, eight boards and 11 dimes and Jamal Murray scored a team-high 25 for Denver.

Lakers 138 (25-21), Thunder 128 (26-18)

Kyle Kuzma knocked down seven 3’s en route to a 32-point outing and Lonzo Ball took over as a floor general to lead the Lakers past the Thunder in overtime. Russell Westbrook had 26 points, nine boards and 13 assists in addition to knocking down three free throws at the end of regulation to send the game to the extra period.

Ivica Zubac was the Lakers’ third standout in the absence of LeBron James, scoring 26 points and grabbing 12 rebounds in 28 minutes of action on 12-for-14 shooting. His plus-minus of plus-35 was a game-high.

Kings 95 (23-22), Hornets 114 (21-23)

A 43-point second quarter was the difference as the Hornets won at home, largely in part due to four bench players (Miles Bridges, Michael Kidd-Gilchrist, Willy Hernangomez and Tony Parker) scoring double-digit points. Kemba Walker scored a team-high 23.

Sixers 120 (30-16), Pacers 96 (29-15)

Joel Embiid flirted with a triple-double (22 points, 13 rebounds, eight assists, three blocks) as Philadelphia took care of business in enemy territory. Jimmy Butler scored a team-high 27 and JJ Redick scored 20 while shooting 6-for-9 from behind the arc. Thad Young scored 27 for Indiana.

Magic Johnson on the Hunt for a Lakers Superstar https://www.slamonline.com/archives/magic-johnson-hunt-lakers-superstar/ https://www.slamonline.com/archives/magic-johnson-hunt-lakers-superstar/#respond Tue, 18 Apr 2017 19:40:42 +0000 http://www.slamonline.com/?p=436484 Magic Johnson has been tasked with convincing yet another superstar to join the Lakers.

The post Magic Johnson on the Hunt for a Lakers Superstar appeared first on SLAM.

Magic Johnson has been tasked with convincing yet another marquee name to don the Purple and Gold.

“The Lakers have always had a superstar,” says Johnson.

Magic was recently named President of Basketball Ops, and along with new GM Rob Pelinka, has his work cut out for him this summer.

Per Lakers Nation:

The Lakers finished the 2016-17 NBA season with only 26 wins. The team failed to end the playoff drought which has now lasted four years. Although the team saw some promising signs of progress and potential from D’Angelo Russell, Brandon Ingram, and Ivica Zubac, the squad still lacks leadership and a superstar.

Fortunately for Magic and company, the team may have a few opportunities to bring in a superstar-caliber player this summer. It is widely known that Paul George of the Indiana Pacers is a possibility for Los Angeles with the perennial All-Star reportedly interested in signing with the Lakers in 2018. Chicago Bulls star Jimmy Bulter might also be a potential target with talk of the 27-year-old set to be on the trading block this summer.

Another motivating factor for the Lakers making a move for a star player this summer is the fact the Staples Center will be the venue for the 2018 NBA All-Star Game. Team president Jeanie Buss recently said she’d be heartbroken if the Lakers didn’t have an All-Star representative, but that would quickly change with the addition of Butler, George or a separate acquisition in NBA free agency.

The third-quarter scuffle between the Lakers and Bucks ended with three ejections, and it left Lakers coach Luke Walton furious.

Walton claimed that a member of the Bucks’ security staff shoved Brandon Ingram during the exchange.

“And then watching the tape,” said Walton, “one of their employees is on the floor, and he grabs Brandon by the jersey and shoves him—not holding him back, shoves him—and that doesn’t get addressed either?

“If there’s nothing wrong with that, then I have no problem finding some people to hire on our staff.”

Walton also took issue with the ref’s decision to punish D’Angelo Russell with the same penalty as Greg Monroe, who delivered a fierce shove to Nick Young’s neck.

“So for the NBA to say that the two of them did the same thing and just canceled each other out is absolute crap to me because D’Angelo just shoved [Monroe] in the back; Monroe grabbed [Young] by the neck.

“I don’t know if he was mad that [Ivica] Zubac was kicking his butt all night long out there. But you grab someone by the neck? That’s not right. And then Monroe went and slapped Brandon in the face.

“So he did all that and he got the same penalty as when D’Angelo did it for shoving someone in the back that was a teammate. So that’s crap to me.”

Bulls 115 (32-35), Hornets 109 (29-38)

Rajon Rondo started for the first time since December 30. He scored 20 points, a season-high, and had 7 rebounds and 6 assists. Nikola Mirotic returned from a three-game absence and scored 24 points on 5 3-pointers, and Dwyane Wade and Jimmy Butler each pitched in with 23 points. The Bulls picked up their pace and scored 18 fast break points, while the Hornets had just 2. The Hornets were 7-29 from three.

Toronto 100 (39-28), Mavs 78 (28-38)

DeMar DeRozan had 25 points to lead the Raptors, but they won this game on the boards, outrebounding Dallas 55-34. Jonas Valanciunas pulled down 12 rebounds, Serge Ibaka had 9 and Patrick Patterson got 7. Every other Raptor had at least one rebound. It’s the most rebounds the Raptors have had all season. On offense, Norm Powell scored 19 and JV had 14 to help DeRozan, but he didn’t need much of it. Toronto was up by 23 at one point and they led from the second quarter to the final buzzer.

Grizzlies 113 (37-30), Bucks 93 (32-34)

It was the Vince Carter show in Memphis tonight. In his first start of the season, VC put in 24 on 8-8 shooting, including 6-6 from downtown. Reminder–he’s 40-years-old. 40.

Mike Conley had 20 and 10, and Tony Allen, Zach Randolph and Marc Gasol each scored 15, 14 and 13 points, respectively. Memphis had 30 assists on 41 field goals, shot over 50% from the field and three-point range and led for the whole game.

Spurs 107 (52-14), Hawks 99 (37-30)

After trailing by 15, the Hawks found themselves down 89-87 in the fourth quarter. Then Kawhi Leonard was like, Nah. The Klaw scored 8 of his 31 in the final frame, putting the pesky Hawks to bed. San Antonio overcame a 21 turnovers and held Atlanta to 6-22 shooting from outside the arc.

Wolves 119 (28-38), Wizards 104 (41-25)

Ricky Rubio had 22 points and a career-best and Timberwolves franchise record 19 assists. He had more helpers than the Wizards as a team and his squad shot 52% for the game thanks to his diming. Karl-Anthony Towns went off for 39 points and 13 boards. In total, six Wolves scored in double-figures. Minny led wire-to-wire. Washington was 7-26 from three-point range.

Jazz 114 (42-25), Clippers 108 (40-27)

The Utah Jazz haven’t been to the playoffs since 2012. They were very aware of that coming into the season and despite being hit hard by injuries, they’ve worked to get to the fourth seed in the West. By beating the Clippers tonight, the team in fifth, they gained a two-game lead over LA.

Gordon Hayward led the way with 27 points and Joe Johnson came into deliver body blows and the final knockout punch. Johnson had 8 of his 14 in the fourth, and with 8 more from Hayward in the final frame, Utah outscored LA 25-22 to make up an earlier 9-point deficit.

The Jazz also got 19 points and 6 assists from George Hill, 18 points from Joe Ingles and 11 points and 10 rebounds from Rudy Gobert. They were 14-21 from three, had 14 more rebounds than the Clippers and won the assist battle. Chris Paul put in 33 for the Clippers.

Kings 120 (26-41), Magic 115 (24-44)

Darren Collison had 19 points and 13 assists, reserve Anthony Tolliver also scored 19 points and the Kings snapped an eight-game losing streak. Tolliver scored back-to-back buckets to keep the Magic at bay in the closing moments. Elfrid Payton had 13 points, 13 assists and 10 rebounds for his third triple-double of the season, but Orlando dropped its third straight.

Nuggets 129 (32-35), Lakers 101 (20-47)

Led by Jamal Murray and Will Barton, who both scored 22, Denver had seven players put in at least 12 points. Mason Plumlee had 10 rebounds to go along with his 15 points and Gary Harris had 7 assists and 12 points. Denver built a 32-point lead in the third quarter. They had 36 assists, 19 more than the Lakers. The only Nugget to not register an assist was Malik Beasley. He only played 2 minutes. For the Lakers, Ivica Zubac had 25 points, the most of his career.

Pistons 106 (32-33), Cavs 101 (42-21)

Even though LeBron James was dunking on absolutely everyone and putting up his 50th career triple-double, the Cavs dropped their third straight game. The Pistons outscored the Cavs by 12 in the fourth. Andre Drummond led the way with 20 points and 16 rebounds. The Pistons clawed their way back from a 15-point deficit and had six players score at least 12 points.

Clippers 114 (39-26), Grizzlies 98 (36-29)

The Grizzlies are 14-15 since the calendar flipped to 2017. With tonight’s loss to the Clippers, Memphis has dropped four in a row by a combined 48 points. They couldn’t stop Austin Rivers, who came off the bench for 20 points, 5 rebounds and 4 assists. LA built a 22-point lead and won the rebounding battle 47-34. Memphis was just 7-20 from three-point range.

Thunder 102 (36-29), Spurs 92 (50-14)

Russell Westbrook had 23 points, 13 rebounds and 13 assists tonight, his 31st triple-double of the season. That ties him with Wilt Chamberlain for the second most in a single season. Oscar Robertson recorded 41 triple-doubles during the ’62-’63 season. Tonight’s effort marked Russ’ first triple-double against the Spurs and the 68th of his career. Victor Oladipo had 20 points for the Thunder. The Spurs rested Tony Parker and were held to 41% shooting. The Thunder won the rebounding, assists and steals battles.

Blazers 114 (28-35), Sixers 108 (23-41)

Since 1985, the only players to put up 28 points, 20 rebounds, 8 assists and 6 blocks are Charles Barkley, Shaquille O’Neal and Jusuf Nurkic. Nurkic’s huge stat line helped him set career highs in points, free throws, assists, blocks, rebounds and offensive rebounds.

Nurkic’s tip-in gave the Blazers a 102-99 lead, but Robert Covington made a 3-pointer to tie it again at 102. Damian Lillard, who had 24 points, made a pair of free throws to give Portland a 106-104 lead with under two minutes left in the extra period. He then made a layup to extend the lead to four and Allen Crabbe’s floater with 20.9 seconds left helped seal the victory for the Blazers. Dario Saric scored a career-high 28 for the Sixers.

Lakers 122 (20-45), Suns 110 (21-44)

Ivica Zubac’s big second quarter, where he scored 10 of his 14 points, helped the Lakers establish themselves in this one. D’Angelo Russell dropped 28 with 6 three-pointers, helping the Lakers pull away in the second half. In the third and fourth quarters, Phoenix shot 25% from distance and gave up 48% shooting to LA.

Wizards 117 (28-20), Knicks 101 (21-29)

Bradley Beal went off for 28 points and Markieff Morris added 24, as the Wizards completed their 15th-straight home victory. John Wall (15p, 13a) and Marcin Gortat (15p, 10r) each double-doubled.

It’s the same story for the floundering Knicks, who are now 3-7 over their last 10 games. The team’s $72 million man, Joakim Noah, appears to have been leapfrogged in Jeff Hornacek’s rotation by Willy Hernangomez, who recorded an impressive double-double.

https://youtu.be/8S8X1XM_KBI

Raptors 108 (30-19), Pelicans 106 (19-30)

This one appeared destined for double-OT after Anthony Davis hit a clutch shot to tie things up at 106. Kyle Lowry had other ideas, however, burying a tough jumper to put Toronto ahead for good.

Jrue Holiday posted a 30-point stat line in the loss, and Anthony Davis grabbed 17 boards with 18 points. AD was on the receiving end of a highlight-reel jam, however, as Norman Powell threw one down over the former Kentucky Wildcat.

Rockets 105 (36-16), Kings 83 (19-30)

James Harden scored a season-low 10 points, Ryan Anderson picked up the slack with 25 points (including six from beyond the arc) and Eric Gordon added 17. Sacramento shot a woeful 34.9% from the field, not able to generate momentum behind DeMarcus Cousins’ 16 points. The more interesting story beyond the court…

Spurs 108 (37-11), Thunder 94 (28-21)

Kawhi Leonard and Russell Westbrook engaged in a spirited duel, with San Antonio ultimately pulling away behind 56 second half points. LaMarcus Aldridge scored 25 points in the W, and Steven Adams/Victor Oladipo combined for 31.

Trail Blazers 115 (22-28), Hornets 98 (23-26)

It was Dame Time at the Moda Center, as Lillard torched Charlotte for 27 points (his 10th career 20+ point game against the Hornets). Portland has now won four of their last five, bumping Charlotte to the eighth seed of the Eastern Conference. Kemba Walker achieved a milestone in the loss; surpassing Larry Johnson for third place on the Hornets’ all-time scoring list.

Lakers 118 (17-34), Nuggets 114 (21-26)

As could have been expected, there wasn’t much defense to be found in this match-up of sub-.500 Western Conference teams. The Lakers shot a combined 52.8% from the field, featuring 20+ point performances from Nick Young, D’Angelo Russell, and Lou Williams. Rookie big man Ivica Zubac got in on the action with 17 points; earning props from Nuggets star Nikola Jokic.

“He’s really talented,” Jokic said of Zubac. “He finishes around the rim. He can dunk the ball. He’s a good rim protector. He just needs a couple of years to become an NBA player. He’ll be really good. He has a bright future.”

Heat 109 (12-30), Rockets 103 (31-12)

Despite James Harden’s 13th triple-double of the season (40p, 12r, 10a), Goran Dragic and the Heat earned their first victory since Jan. 4. Dragic tallied 21 points with eight boards and eight dimes, Wayne Ellington dropped 18, and Dion Waiters scored 17. The Rockets, who were without Ryan Anderson against Miami, will have a tough match-up with the Warriors on Friday.

Raptors 119 (27-13), Nets 109 (8-32)

No Kyle Lowry? No problem. DeMar DeRozan lit up the Nets for 36 points and Cory Joseph added a career-high 33, lifting Toronto to a franchise-best 28-13 record at the midway point of the season. Brook Lopez scored a team-high 28 points and rookie Caris Levert added 14, but the Nets’ 11-game skid continued.

Mavericks 99 (13-27), Bulls 98 (19-22)

Jimmy Butler was this close to playing hero in Tuesday’s match-up. “Buckets” knocked down a clutch jumper to put Chicago ahead with just 22.8 seconds left in regulation, before Deron Williams found Wesley Matthews for a game-deciding 3-pointer in Dallas’ final possession.

On top of Matthews’ big shot, the eighth-year veteran received props for his elite defense.

Butler double-doubled (24p, 12a) and Robin Lopez added 21 in a tough loss for the Bulls.

Spurs 122 (32-8), Timberwolves 114 (14-27)

The T’Wolves showed off their offensive potential in the early-going, netting 71 first half points. However, Kawhi Leonard and LaMarcus Aldridge were ultimately too much for Tom Thibodeau’s squad, scoring a combined 63 points in Leonard’s fourth consecutive 30+ point game. Karl-Anthony Towns and Ricky Rubio each double-doubled, but Andrew Wiggins was limited to just eight shot attempts on the night.

Nuggets 127 (16-23), Lakers 121 (15-29)

Defense wasn’t a priority for either team, as the Nuggets utilized a 13-2 first half run to maintain their lead for good at the Staples Center.

Will Barton was a perfect 5-5 from beyond the arc in a 26-point night, and Nikola Jokic was stellar in a 29-point, 15-rebound showing. Ivica Zubac was effective in his return from a D-League assignment, though he did get dunked on by Wilson Chandler:

Los Angeles Lakers second-year forward Larry Nance Jr. suffered a “probable fracture” of his right hand Thursday during Summer League play.

The 23-year-old was hurt during the Lakers’ 88-80 loss to the Cleveland Cavaliers at Thomas & Mack Center.

He finished with 12 points and 10 rebounds.

Per the OC Register:

Instead of feeling broke and hungover, the Lakers added their first loss and an unexpected injury to their Summer League experience Thursday night.

Nance took a nasty fall with 35 seconds left in the game after driving to the basket. Lakers trainer Marco Nunez then escorted Nance to the locker room, with X-rays and ice to follow.

“I’ve seen his condition,” Lakers rookie center Ivica Zubac said. “He says it’s broken.” […] The Lakers would not go that far. Nance will return to Los Angeles and see a hand specialist on Friday.

In a not-so-subtle gesture, the Los Angeles Lakers gave Kobe Bryant’s old locker to incoming rookie Brandon Ingram.

The No. 2 overall pick in this summer’s NBA Draft says he welcomes the pressure to become the franchise’s newest savior.

Ingram, 18, practiced for the first time with the Lakers’ summer league team Tuesday.

Per the AP:

The 18-year-old rookie sees the daunting symbolism in literally taking the place of the most prolific scorer in franchise history, and he greets it with a smile.

“I did see where my locker was, and I definitely knew it was Kobe’s locker,” Ingram said. “(General manager) Mitch (Kupchak) told me I had some big shoes to fill when I came in here, but I liked it. I like the pressure that’s on me right now. Of course it’s going to motivate me to do good things on the court. It’s all good pressure for me.”

Ingram is already determined to build chemistry with Julius Randle, Jordan Clarkson and fellow No. 2 pick D’Angelo Russell, the Lakers’ point guard. His primary goal is to become a more vocal player after Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski impressed the importance of communication on him last season. […] “I was ready for this first practice,” Ingram said. “Just getting on the floor with those guys, and just seeing how he (Russell) wants to play, and of course how the coach wants to play. Connecting with those guys is really important to see what they want to do to be a contender in this league.”
