For three decades we’ve covered many amazing basketball characters, but some stand above the rest—not only because of their on-court skills (though those are always relevant), but because of how they influenced and continue to influence basketball culture, and thus influenced SLAM. Meanwhile, SLAM has also changed those players’ lives in various ways, as we’ve documented their careers with classic covers, legendary photos, amazing stories, compelling videos and more.

We compiled a group of individuals (programming note: 30 entries, not 30 people total) who mean something special to SLAM and to our audience. Read the full list here and order your copy of SLAM 248, where this list was originally published, here.

I called Chris Paul the “Forrest Gump of the post-2005 NBA” in a 2020 cover story about him. I think that’s pretty self-explanatory but figured I should spend some time here to explain that, because it sets the table for the reason CP3 is on this list.

Let’s quickly run through what earned him that distinction. In 2005, he’s drafted by New Orleans, but due to destruction caused by Hurricane Katrina, he spends most of his first two NBA seasons playing home games in Oklahoma City. In NOLA, he becomes homies with Lil Wayne, becomes an All-Star, becomes arguably the best PG in the League, becomes a playoff contender. Then he’s traded to the Lakers, un-traded by David Stern (I can’t emphasize enough how big a deal this was on 2011 NBA Twitter), then traded to the Clippers, becoming the heart of Lob City (another massive part of early 2010s NBA Twitter) and a perpetual postseason contender. He becomes president of the NBA Players Association, signs a long-term contract, and then the Donald Sterling racist audio incident happens, and he’s in the middle of that saga. Eventually he’s traded to Houston, then OKC. Then Covid happens, and Chris is in the middle of setting up the Bubble, lowkey a huge national public health story. Then, while in the Bubble, the Jacob Blake shooting takes place, and Chris—literally on national TV before a Thunder-Rockets game is about to tip—is a part of the group that holds the players off the court, and later as PA president, is the head of the group that figured out how to infuse social justice messaging and action into the NBA’s infrastructure. He leads the Thunder on an impressive run in the Bubble, then later joins the Suns, where he leads the team to the Finals, and is on the team when there’s another racist owner situation with Robert Sarver, who later sells the franchise.

A couple years pass and then CP3 joins the Warriors, where he’s currently attempting to help push the Steph-Klay-Dray group toward another ring. Along the way he played an iconic commercial character (Cliff Paul), amassed 22,000+ points and 11,000+ assists, made 12 All-Star teams and the NBA’s 75th Anniversary team and dropped 13 signature sneakers with Jordan Brand. And he was on the banana boat, because of course he was. The guy is everywhere.

“Forrest Gump of the post-2005 NBA”—undeniably accurate. But that’s not alone enough to make it to this list, because this is the “30 Players Who Defined SLAM’s 30 Years,” and if there wasn’t a direct SLAM connection, Chris would just be a guy who was around the NBA universe for a while, paying us no mind. But CP3 paid us plenty mind. He was first featured in SLAM in April 2003 as a high schooler with a one-page PUNKS article in the back of the mag; his brother CJ once told me that his family had that page framed in their house.

He was on his first SLAM cover in 2006, his second in 2008, his third in 2009, his fourth in 2011, his fifth in 2012 (alongside Blake Griffin), and his sixth in 2020. In his prime, he had a fun, uptempo point guard game that a magazine like SLAM was practically created to celebrate, and in his veteran years, he’s been a methodical game manager who almost exclusively plays on teams we cover deep into the playoffs. He was always relevant in the sneaker world—the aforementioned 13 sigs—and he was early in the tunnel fit game, becoming an @LeagueFits regular during our fashion account’s salad days. (The three hoodies he wore in his most recent cover shoot were produced in collaboration with SLAM and LeagueFits and sold on slamgoods.com, with the profits going to charity.)

A player who’s seemingly everywhere, finding his way into every crevice of basketball culture and NBA happenings for almost two decades, and a publication that covers every crevice of basketball culture and NBA happenings for exactly three decades. It makes perfect sense that the two would have a great, symbiotic relationship.

So, of course Chris was going to be on this list. The guy is everywhere.

Robert Sarver is reportedly finalizing a deal to sell the Phoenix Suns to billionaire mortgage lender Mat Ishbia, according to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski.

The deal is reportedly worth $4 billion per Woj. Ishbia will be bringing in his brother, Justin, as a significant investor and alternate governor for the Suns, per Shams Charania of The Athletic.

Sarver and Ishbia also released their own official statements. Sarver called Ishbia “the right leader to build on franchise legacies of winning and community support,” while Ishbia said that he’s “honored” to be the “next stewards of the Phoenix Suns and Phoenix Mercury.”

Sarver has been looking to sell the Suns since he was suspended for a year and fined due to the League investigating allegations of a hostile workplace within the Phoenix front office. The fine and suspension were met with many mixed emotions from players, the players union, and even a chairman of the Suns’ ownership group.

Ultimately, Sarver’s decision to sell won’t go down as infamously as Donald Sterlings’ ouster, but it does clarify that the NBA won’t stand down to allegations of racism and allegations within franchise front offices in the League.

The Phoenix Suns avenged their Game 7 loss and finally got some “get-back” after dispatching the Dallas Mavericks, 107-105, to open their 2022-23 campaign.

The Sun-Mavs season opener nearly brought up still-fresh and painful memories from Game 7 for Phoenix as they fell behind by 22-points in the first half. However, the Suns fought back in the second half and rallied for a monumental win to start the season on a high note.

“If you get your asses kicked, you want to get your get-back,” Devin Booker told ESPN’s Jorge Sedano while reminiscing about losing his first Game 7. “That’s just life.

“We still have 81 games to go. I said that before the game. It’s a good start. I think it’s a good start to show our team if we’re down early that, we can come back in games.”

Phoenix’s ability to rally and win a closeout of a tight game late in the fourth should come as no surprise when you remember why they became the overall last season. The Suns went 33-9 in clutch games, defined by the score being within five points in the final minutes.

The comeback effort can also serve as a rallying point after a dramatic offseason full of front-office chaos due to team owner Robert Sarver’s season-long suspension and decision to put the Suns and Mercury up for sale. Not to mention the tense negotiations and apparent cold feelings Deandre Ayton has towards Coach Monty Williams. The starting lineup also had some turnover after Jae Crowder decided not to play out the final season of his contract while the front office seeks a trade partner.

All the offseason theatrics were a backdrop to the fact that NBA scheduled Phoenix and Dallas for their season-openers after the Mavericks not only embarrassed but ended the Suns’ season with a debilitating Game 7 loss for the ages.

“I think any time you win in the NBA, it’s cool,” Williams said. “But to beat the team that knocked you out, it doesn’t erase that feeling, that hurt, but it does help you grow.”

The Suns’ comeback bid began with Booker (28 points and nine assists) checking back into the game with his team down 15 points. The two-time All-Star scored seven points and handed out six dimes during the fourth quarter. However, the true hero of the game was Damion Lee, who scored 11 of his points in the final frame, including his game-winning fadeaway with 9.7 seconds left in the game.

Lee, a championship veteran, was a casualty of the Warriors’ decision to invest in their future this summer. He signed a veterans minimum deal during the League’s free agency period and has immediately made an impact as a reserve guard. The 29-year-old guard more than made up for giving up a game-tying and-1 layup to Doncic by hitting his game-winner.

Lee was also given a boost of confidence by Williams during Phoenix’s ensuing timeout.

“Coach just looks at me, and he said: ‘Hey, go make a play. Go make a play,”‘ said Lee, who is now 2-of-9 on tying or go-ahead field goals in the final minute during his career, according to ESPN Stats & Information research. “That’s what you want — a coach that’s always going to instill that confidence in you, no matter what happens.”

A four-time NBA champion, three-time NBA finals MVP, and who many consider the most dominant center of all time is looking to take the highest position of an NBA franchise. Shaquille O’Neal recently revealed that he’d like to take ownership of an NBA team, but his comments about the rumor make it difficult for fans to assume which city he’ll end up in.

“It’d probably be disrespectful to say it,” O’Neal told CNN’s Becky Anderson. “But I would like to go back home. I’ll leave that to the viewers to figure out [what it means]. I would like to go back home.”

Home can mean many places for O’Neal as he played for six NBA franchises, played college basketball at LSU, and was born in Newark, NJ. O’Neal’s first professional “home” was with the Orlando Magic, where he was selected number one overall in the 1992 NBA Draft. He established himself in just four seasons averaging 27.2 points, 12.5 rebounds, and 2.8 blocks per game.

O’Neal and his crew brought the Magic to its first NBA Finals appearance in 1995 but couldn’t get it done against Hakeem Olajuwon’s back-to-back Finals-winning Houston Rockets. Nonetheless, the city of Orlando could still have great respect for their best center of all time, and the fans could settle on him taking over the organization.

O’Neal’s next ‘home’ is where many saw him become the legendary figure he is in the history of basketball, the Los Angeles Lakers. O’Neal won multiple championships in Los Angeles with the late-great Kobe Bryant. The pair blossomed into the most dominant duo of their time, and in the 1999-2000 season, O’Neal won his first season MVP award.

The history of the Lakers would undoubtedly be held in good hands with O’Neal at the helm, but that won’t happen any time soon.

A final team to note as one of Shaquille O’Neal’s ownership probabilities is the Phoenix Suns. Though his time in the desert wasn’t the highlight of his career, he still showed what he had in the late stage of his career — making an All-Star appearance in 2009 and averaging 17.8 points as a 37-year-old.

The Suns have been under media scrutiny recently after team owner Robert Sarver was suspended a year after an independent investigation found he helped foster a toxic workplace culture based on racist and misogynistic behavior. Sarver recently revealed he was planning on putting up the Suns and Mercury for sale due to the investigation.

O’Neal has his options, but for now, he can give back to the community and continue investing in the several businesses he owns. No franchise is a long shot for the four-time champion, but an ownership decision may come sooner than expected.

Editor’s Note: NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement that he “fully” supports Sarver’s decision to sell the Sun and Mercury. According to multiple reports, Sarver ended up selling due to mounting pressure from corporate sponsors if there wasn’t a change in leadership.

Robert Sarver has announced that he’s “beginning the process” to sell his majority stakes in the Suns and Mercury. Sarver is currently serving a one-year suspension after the NBA concluded its investigation into Sarver’s “workplace misconduct and organizational deficiencies.” during his 18-year tenure as owner of the Phoenix franchises.

“Words that I deeply regret now overshadow nearly two decades of building organizations that brought people together – and strengthened the Phoenix area – through the unifying power of professional men’s and women’s basketball,” Sarver said in a public statement. “As a man of faith, I believe in atonement and the path to forgiveness. I expected that the commissioner’s one-year suspension would provide the time for me to focus, make amends and remove my personal controversy from the teams that I and so many fans love.

But in our current unforgiving climate, it has become painfully clear that that is no longer possible – that whatever good I have done, or could still do, is outweighed by things I have said in the past. For those reasons, I am beginning the process of seeking buyers for the Suns and Mercury.

Sarver’s stunning announcement comes after the NBA players union, LeBron James, Chris Paul, and Draymond Green expressed disappointment in varying degrees about his punishment. Green specifically called for the owners to vote Sarver out; James believed the League “definitely got this wrong,” while CP3 tweeted that “the sanctions fell short.”

“I do not want to be a distraction to these two teams and the fine people who work so hard to bring the joy and excitement of basketball to fans around the world,” Sarver said.

“I want what’s best for these two organizations, the players, the employees, the fans, the community, my fellow owners, the NBA, and the WNBA. This is the best course of action for everyone. In the meantime, I will continue to work on becoming a better person and continuing to support the community in meaningful ways. Thank you for continuing to root for the Suns and the Mercury, embracing the power that sports has to bring us together.”

Suns vice chairman Jahm Nafaji also came out and called for Sarver to resign as the owner of the Suns and Mercury. Commissioner Adam Silver let it be known that despite the precedent he set in 2015 when the NBA banned Donald Sterling due to his racist remarks, he didn’t “have the right to take away” Sarver’s ownership stakes.

Ownership in Phoenix should be more attractive after back-to-back brilliant seasons where the Suns recorded the best record in the League. According to NBA insider Adrian Wojnarowski, League execs believe Phoenix could be a monster free agent destination with the proper ownership due to its warm weather climate

Golden State Warriors forward Draymond Green is one of the more outspoken professionals in the League. He uses multiple platforms to share his insight on controversial topics, not only in the NBA but also around the world. Recently, Green used his podcast to call out the NBA’s decision to give Phoenix Suns/Mercury owner Robert Sarver a one-year suspension after his work misconduct allegations.

Sarver was caught using several offensive languages around his respected organizations. With reports coming out stating he used the ‘N-Word’ frequently, as well as misogynistic comments, Draymond Green opened up about how this makes a representation of the NBA.

“That’s bulls–t. You can’t continue to represent way more people than yourself with those views,” said Green. “With speaking to people the way he did, with treating African Americans and women the way he has. That’s not OK.”

The NBA has been able to address racial justice matters pretty seriously; however, this recent polemic on behalf of Sarver has the basketball community believing he should be removed from his position and banned for life.

The support of the Black Lives Matter movement since 2020, and the termination of former Los Angeles Clippers owner Donald Sterling back in 2015 make this case look rather simple for League commissioner Adam Silver. However, he ponders the idea that removing the rights to Sarver’s ownership of the teams is too much to get behind. Essentially, Silver believes the $10 million fine and one-year suspension will serve as a lesson for the inappropriate acts caused by Sarver.

“What it would take to remove that team from his control is a very involved process,” said Silver. “and it’s different than holding a job. It just is. When you actually own a team, it’s just a very different proposition.”

Green called on League governors to vote on Sarver’s position. A vote is required from at least three-quarters of the board to remove him, per Baxter Holmes of ESPN. Draymond Green continues to shed light on matters that need to be discussed around the League, and his input will certainly re-adjust the decision of Adam Silver.

In an open letter to Phoenix Suns players and employees, vice chairman Jahm Najafi called for the resignation of majority owner Robert Sarver, who faces a one-year suspension and $10 million fine for “workplace misconduct and organizational deficiencies” over his 18-year tenure as a Suns owner.

Per the Arizona Republic, Najafi wrote, “in accordance with my commitment to helping eradicate any form of racism, sexism and bias, as vice chairman of the Phoenix Suns, I am calling for the resignation of Robert Sarver.”

In response to both the NBA’s punishment and the report released by Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz, the law firm that carried out Sarver’s investigation, Najafi stated, “the conduct [Sarver] is alleged to have committed has stunned and saddened me and is unacceptable.”

The Suns’ minority owner “has no interest in becoming a managing partner,” but he cannot “sit back and allow our children and future generations of fans to think that this behavior is tolerated because of wealth and privilege.”

Alongside vice chair Sam Garvin, who will serve as the Sun’s interim Governor during Sarver’s one-year suspension, Najafi wrote that they will “will work tirelessly to ensure the next team steward treats all stakeholders with dignity, professionalism, and respect.”

Najafi went on to apologize to “all whose lives and professions have been impacted” and reiterated his personal commitment to helping “eradicate any form of racism, sexism, and bias, which is unacceptable anywhere in our society.” Nafaji’s open letter joined the chorus of several NBA figures who expressed that Sarver’s actions have no place in the League and that his punishment didn’t fit his crimes.

Najafi’s resolute call for Sarver’s resignation joins the sentiments of statements from LeBron James, Chris Paul, and NBPA Executive Director Tamika Tremaglio.

The NBA’s announcement that Suns and Mercury owner Robert Sarver would be suspended for one year and be fined $10 million has been met with mixed reviews from fans, players, and media.

In the wake of the NBA’s judgment, LeBron James, Suns point guard and former players union president Cris Paul, and the NBPA all issued their own statements about the suspension and fine. Paul said he was “horrified and disappointed” by the report from the Wachtell, Lipton, Rosen & Katz law firm that conducted the investigation.

Although James “loves this League” and “deeply respects our leadership,” he believes that the “League definitely got this wrong.” James went on to say that “there is no place in this League for that kind of behavior,” explicitly rallying against “misogyny, sexism, and racism in any workplace.”

The NBPA, led by Executive Director Tamika Tremaglio, also released a statement. Like James, Tremaglio said Sarver’s “reported actions and conduct are horrible” and that Sarver’s workplace misconduct “have no place in our sport or any workplace for that matter.” Tremaglio took over leadership as the players union leader after Michele Roberts retired in September 2021.

After the League met with its Board of Governors in New York, League commissioner Adam Silver knew that the NBA’s independent investigation would garner those responses. He’s even admitted to having “private conversations” about what the independent investigators found. He also said he would give players leeway “to speak directly about how they feel.”

“I’d only say disheartening,” said Silver in describing the players’ reaction to the investigation’s findings, per Arizona Central. “Same reaction I’ve had in many cases. I think these are — I think saddened, as I was, I think, for those players to see that we continue to deal with these issues.

“Look, I think it’s no secret this is a league where roughly 80 percent of our players are Black. More than half our coaches are Black. I will say that none of them maybe are as shocked as I am, living their lives, that I don’t think they’re reading this saying, oh, my God, I can’t believe this happens.”

Sarver, the majority owner of the Suns and Mercury, was fined $10 million and suspended for a year for “workplace misconduct and organizational deficiencies” that were found during a 10-month investigation over his 18-year tenure as a Suns team owner. Phoenix has 14 players that are either Black or mixed race out of their 16-man roster. The Suns also employ a Black head coach (Monty Williams) and general manager (James Jones).

In a separate statement Sarver released on Tuesday, Sarver said that he disagreed with “some of the particulars” that the investigators found but ultimately accepts “the consequences” of the League’s decision.

“Good leadership requires accountability,” Sarver said in a statement released by the Suns. “For the Suns and Mercury organizations, that begins with me. While I disagree with some of the particulars of the NBA’s report, I would like to apologize for my words and actions that offended our employees. I take full responsibility for what I have done. I am sorry for causing this pain, and these errors in judgment are not consistent with my personal philosophy or my values.”

Silver also said he didn’t have “the right” to take away the Suns and Mercury from Sarver. While Sarver is banned from participating in any NBA or WNBA team activities, including games, practices, or business partner activity, he will be compelled to complete a training program focused on respect and appropriate conduct in the workplace.

“In terms of future behavior, there’s no question he is on notice,” Silver continued. “He knows that. I also think, though, if you look at the chronology of the report, most of this activity goes back, most of the inappropriate activity goes back many years.”

The Suns begin their season against the Dallas Mavericks on Oct. 19.

This past week, Phoenix Suns and Mercury owner Robert Sarver was in headlines across the League as allegations had arisen that he issued workplace harassment. The misconduct in ownership featured racist and misogynistic comments that forced the NBA to suspend Sarver for one year while handing him a $10 million fine.

Basketball fans hope he’d be terminated altogether, but NBA commissioner Adam Silver believes he has ‘no right’ to remove Sarver from his position in ownership of the teams.

“I don’t have the right to take away his team,” said Silver. “I don’t want to rest on that legal point because, of course, there could be a process to take away someone’s team in this League. It’s very involved, and I ultimately made the decision that it didn’t rise to that level. But, to me, the consequences are severe here on Mr. Sarver.”

The NBA has faced racial misconduct amongst ownership in the past, most notably from Donald Sterling, former Los Angeles Clippers owner. The racist comments he made to his mistress on a leaked audio recording forced the NBA to take action and ban Sterling from any NBA events for life. Many feel that Sarver’s comments have been just as bad, if not worse than Sterling’s, and the League is now facing questions about whether or not they are handling ethical guidelines solemnly.

When asked why termination wouldn’t apply to an owner but would to an average employee of the League, Silver said: “What it would take to remove that team from his control is a very involved process, and it’s different than holding a job. It just is. When you actually own a team, it’s just a very different proposition.”

Further investigation of the case revealed that Sarver had been using the N-Word pretty openly and allegedly used it ‘five times’ around the workplace.

Although Sarver has already pledged to take complete accountability and practice ethical values, many fans and leadership across the League will not condone the moral decision to give him a one-year suspension. A suspension of that nature and donations to organizations addressing race and gender-based issues shouldn’t overcome the harassment tolerated by employees in Phoenix. Further action may be in store from Commissioner Silver.

Following an investigation into the workplace culture of the Phoenix Suns spurned by a hard-hitting report ESPN released last year on November 4, the NBA announced that Phoenix Suns and Mercury majority owner Robert Sarver had been suspended from both the organizations he governs for one year and also received a $10 million suspension from the NBA.

The investigation found that Robert Sarver was guilty of many offenses, including sexual harassment, racial prejudice, unequal treatment of female employees, and verbal abuse.

The NBA said Sarver “engaged in instances of inequitable conduct toward female employees, made many sex-related comments in the workplace, made inappropriate comments about the physical appearance of female employees and other women, and on several occasions engaged in inappropriate physical conduct toward male employees.”

The NBA found that Sarver “engaged in demeaning and harsh treatment of employees, including by yelling and cursing at them.”

The independent investigation from the NBA also revealed that Sarver was guilty of saying the N-Word “on at least five occasions” when recounting the statements of others.

Most of the Phoenix Suns employees under investigation for engaging in workplace misconduct over the last 18-years were no longer employed by the Suns organization by the beginning of the NBA’s independent investigation. The terms of Sarver’s suspension dictate that he is barred from being present at any NBA or WNBA facility and that he may not attend or participate in any NBA or WNBA event or activity.

The Phoenix Suns released a press release last October before the investigation into their workplace practices to deny any allegations of workplace misconduct by anyone in the Phoenix Suns front office.

https://twitter.com/Suns/status/1451668512557047816?s=20&t=0V__kS0L4MP5M1xsQST6Wg

The investigation was based on information gathered from 320 individual interviews and over 80,000 documents. Sarver’s suspension is the latest in the NBA’s effort to hold owners accountable for their actions.

The Phoenix Suns have played their way to top record in the NBA, leading the Western Conference at 37-9, 3.5 games ahead of the second-place Golden State Warriors (34-13).

The Suns’ results over the last two seasons have led to management deciding to sign general manager James Jones to sign a multi-year contract extension, per Marc J. Spears of The Undefeated.

Jones joined the Suns as the VP of basketball operations in 2018 before being named interim GM and permanently named to the position in 2019. He is one of 10 Black GM’s in the NBA, winning Executive of the Year last year, hired 2020 Coach of Monty Williams as head coach, building a competitive roster that reached the 2021 NBA Finals after acquiring and re-signing All-Star guard Chris Paul

Jones has agreed to an extension despite a bombshell report from ESPN that Robert Sarver allegedly created a sometimes toxic and hostile workplace of racism and sexism during his tenure as Suns owner. Since then, Sarver has been under NBA investigation. The 18-year owner said that he would support an inquiry into the allegations made against him.

Jones told The Undefeated that the League’s investigation “didn’t give me pause” and said, “None of what’s been said describes the Robert Sarver I know, respect and like — it just doesn’t.” after ESPN’s report was published.

“This organization, business, and basketball, it’s good. The talent, the people here are amazing. I have such a great team that I work with on the basketball side,” Jones told Spears on taking the extension while Sarver is under investigation. “But just as well equally, and sometimes even more on the business side. Because we’re the Suns, right? This is entertainment. And you don’t do the things that we do in a vacuum. That’s what I tell people a lot of times: You don’t do this in the vacuum; it takes everyone.

“And if you have the right mix of people, if you have common goals and you’re aligned, it makes working, coming to work every day exciting. It creates an awesome experience for everyone involved. And so that’s been my experience since I’ve been here. It’s been awesome.”

With the Suns re-emerging as a threat to return to the Finals, and the Suns front office and players squarely behind Jones and Williams, it only makes sense for the franchise to award the architect of their success. Phoenix takes on the Utah Jazz (30-18) on Wednesday in Utah.

The Valley is back.

Per CNBC’s Jabari Young, the Phoenix Suns will make their first appearance in the NBA Playoffs for the first time since the 2009-10 season.

Back in those days, Steve Nash and Amar’e Stoudemire were a deadly pick-and-roll duo for the ‘7 Seconds or Less’ Suns in an offense as exciting as any had been seen to that point.

You just had to be there.

That being said, Phoenix is no stranger to having a hot-shot roster. Nowadays, a different high IQ point guard — Chris Paul — is leading the charge, with rising stars in Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton making an indelible impact for the franchise.

Booker has averaged 25.4 points, 4.2 rebounds and 4.4 assists so far this season, while Paul has averaged 16.2 points, 4.6 rebounds, and 8.7 assists per game. Ayton, now in his third season, is averaging 14.8 points, 10.7 rebounds and 1.1 blocks per game while shooting a career-high .620 percent from the field.

Currently the second seed in the Western Conference, the Suns ended their 10-season playoff drought (the fifth-longest in NBA history) following a 109-101 victory over against the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday.

While this is CP3’s 11th postseason appearance, Booker will have his first career playoff experience in a stretch that will be invaluable to his evolution into superstar player.

Golden State Warriors forward Kelly Oubre Jr. had a breakout season with the Phoenix Suns in 2019-20, averaging career-highs of 18.7 points, 6.4 rebounds and 1.3 steals per game, while also converting a career-high .452 from the field and .352 from beyond the arc.

If you’re expecting that to have given him a favorable impression of the Suns, you’re wrong.

Starting his career with the Washington Wizards after being drafted in 2015, Oubre was traded to Phoenix last December. He’s played 96 games in that time and seen all but four of his teammates change.

On the outside looking in, the Suns looked like a respectable if struggling franchise; one that had promise because of players like Devin Booker and Deandre Ayton. However, the picture that Oubre paints of Phoenix one where the appearance of an earnest desire to build the best possible team is just a facade.

Making a radio appearance on 95.7 The Game’s “Damon, Ratto & Kolsky” in San Francisco, Oubre was asked about the difference between playing for an owner like Joe Lacob and one with an unsavory reputation like Robert Sarver.

Per ESPN’s Nick Friedell, Oubre had this to say in response to the question:

“I can play for an owner — somebody who actually cares about the organization and not just the perception of the organization on the media end of it. It’s all about the foundation for me, man. You have a beautiful foundation, can build a beautiful [future].”

With Oubre’s perspective in mind, fun facts like Booker — now the franchise’s longest-tenured player at 24-years-old — having had 80 different teammates in just five seasons now looks like the byproduct of dysfunction more than Phoenix trying to find players to keep long-term.

That said, even though the Suns made a solid move in acquiring future Hall of Fame point guard Chris Paul by trading Oubre, perhaps ‘Tsunami Papi ‘is lucky that he wasn’t cast away earlier.

Beloved Arizona Cardinals wide receiver Larry Fitzgerald has purchased a minority stake in the Phoenix Suns, the team has announced, becoming the second active NFL player to have a partial share of an NBA franchise.

Fitgerald’s ties to the city and state run deep after 16 years of employment with the local football club. Fitzgerald’s philanthropy has reverberated throughout the community and his 11 All-Pro nods certainly contribute to his reputation among fans.

Larry has been a great ambassador for our organization for years,” majority owner Robert Sarver said in a statement. “He is an Arizona icon and a businessman, passionate philanthropist, and leader. He brings a unique perspective from outside basketball but still grounded in sport, and we welcome him as a valued partner and investor.

The other active NFL player with a share of an NBA franchise is, of course, Aaron Rodgers, who is frequently spotted supporting his own investment, the Milwaukee Bucks.

John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM adds that Fitzgerald has already formed solid relationships with Suns players and can offer them money management advice and connections to corporate America.

The Phoenix Suns are expected to hire Jeff Bower as vice president of basketball operations within the next 24-48 hours, John Gambadoro of Arizona Sports 98.7 FM reports.

The executive will join Phoenix’s front office with 11 years of experience as a general manager and will work in conjunction with current interim general manager James Jones.

News of the pairing doesn’t come as a total surprise, as Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN detailed franchise owner Robert Sarver’s affinity for the ex-Detroit Pistons executive over the weekend.

The installation of Bower in the position will close the vacancy left open when Phoenix fired previous general manager Ryan McDonough last October.

Bower will join a team that’s won, on averaged, 22.8 games over the course of the past four seasons.

He, alongside Jones and head coach Igor Kokoskov will have the challenge of turning a handful of intriguing draft assets – including a 2019 pick with a 52.1% chance of falling in the top-four – into a competitive basketball team.

Suns owner Robert Sarver has reportedly threatened to move his team to Seattle or Las Vegas if members of the Phoenix City Council don’t approve a new arena deal, per Lauri Roberts of the Arizona Republic:

Councilwomen Laura Pastor and Debra Stark reportedly asked to postpone this afternoon’s 2:30 p.m. vote. It is noted that there are three city officials that are not in favor of the $150 million upgrade to Talking Stick Arena, and Williams has asked to postpone the vote until next month to allow for two public hearings.

If the Suns were in fact to move, where would be best: Las Vegas or Seattle?

The surging New Orleans Pelicans will have a major question to answer this summer: Do they bring back superstar center DeMarcus Cousins?

Boogie, who is recovering from a torn achilles, will hit unrestricted free agency and naturally demand a big contract. But according to ESPN‘s Zach Lowe, it might not be AS big as you’d think:

Only a half-dozen or so teams have max-level space this season, and most won’t pursue Cousins at that level, sources say. He doesn’t make sense for rebuilding teams. Even bad teams hungry for a big jump in wins next season — say, the Suns — can’t be confident Cousins will be ready to produce at his usual All-Star level until 2019-20, anyway. (Still: Never underestimate Robert Sarver’s July 1 exuberance in the name of short-term gain.) Some teams are afraid of his baggage.

Lowe suggests there may be only two suitors for Cousins – The Mavericks and the Lakers -, which would give New Orleans leverage in negotiations:

The Pelicans have broached internally the idea of offering Cousins a two- or three-year deal at less than the max, per sources familiar with the discussions. I would not expect that to go over well with Cousins’ camp. But the Pelicans have the dual leverage of winning without Cousins and a tepid market for him.

Before suffering his injury in late January, Cousins was averaging 25.2 points, 12.9 rebounds, 5.4 assists, 1.6 steals, and 1.6 blocks per game.

Atlanta Hawks coach Mike Budenholzer met with the Phoenix Suns on Monday and Tuesday to explore the possibility of becoming their next coach, according to ESPN‘s Adrian Wojnarowski:

Budenholzer met with Suns general manager Ryan McDonough and owner Robert Sarver over the two days, league sources said, after Atlanta granted him permission to meet with Phoenix late last week.

The Hawks and Budenholzer are both open to ending their partnership, but there are several hurdles that would need to be cleared before that could happen, including the Suns making an offer and agreeing to a contract and possible compensation to Atlanta.

The Suns are reportedly considering several other candidates, including interim coach Jay Triano, Steve Clifford, David Fizdale, David Blatt, and Frank Vogel. But the organization has “largely been focused on getting to know Budenholzer in recent days,” says Wojnarowski.

Budenholzer, the 2015-16 NBA Coach of the Year, has two years and more than $13 million left on his contract.

If “everything works out” in Phoenix this summer, Devin Booker will be more than happy to sign his name on a five-year, $156 million contract extension.

Booker, 21, sounded a lot more enthused about committing to the Suns long-term back in October, before embarking on a 20-59 campaign (the NBA’s worst record.)

The front-office will ask for Booker’s input in their search for a head coach during the offseason, though he’s a lot more concerned with the roster makeup going forward.

Per the AZ Republic (via PBT):

“I’ve had three coaches since I’ve been here and I’ve never blamed anything on one of the coaches as an individual,” Booker said. “I’ve had great relationships with all the coaches. I think the NBA just overall, when you need somebody to blame the first person that you go to is the coach. But at the end of the day you need the right players that match each other. Not just the best players. Chemistry helps.

“I just don’t think a lot of responsibility is with the coaches. It’s a players’ league.”

Booker said in October that he would be willing to sign the five-year, $156 million contract extension the Suns can offer him this summer. Asked if anything – or everything – that has happened this season has changed his mind, he chuckled and said: “I mean, that’s a whole other discussion. A lot goes into that. When that time comes I’ll have to make a decision.”

But then he added, “I’ve always said this is the place I want to be so if everything works out, yeah.”

Team owner Robert Sarver believes the Phoenix Suns can “flip the switch” and have a winning record next season.

Sarver, however, acknowledges that his franchise has a herculean task ahead of it this summer.

Phoenix (19-47) currently has the NBA’s second-worst record.

Per the AZ Republic:

Would you agree that this will be the most important summer you’ve had in a while?

Sarver: “I think so. Our younger players need confidence. I think there’s a fine line between coming in a game feeling confident you can win and not feeling confident you can win. I think maybe we can add a piece or two next season with some leadership and some experience and some winning and some grit that can help turn that confidence level with some of our younger players. So this offseason is going to be about adding some of that confidence and leadership, and at the same time to get some of our younger players to take a meaningful step forward. I think you’ve seen that a little bit this year. Obviously, Devin (Booker) has shown he’s capable of playing at an All-Star level and can be one of the pillars of the franchise moving forward. The second half of this season for Josh (Jackson) has shown what we saw when we drafted him. At times you’ve seen Marquese (Chriss) and Dragan (Bender) show what they can do, but the two of them haven’t been consistent enough.”

What are your expectations for next season?

Sarver: “I think with a piece or two and a solid year of development, I think we can flip the switch and end up being a team that can have a winning record. But looking at where we stand right now, there’s a long way to go to get to that.”

When Eric Bledsoe met with the Suns to ask for a trade during the offseason, he was reportedly told that the team had “underperformed” since he became a starter.

From ESPN’s Chris Haynes:

The 27-year-old point guard had met with Suns owner Robert Sarver and McDonough during the preseason and requested a trade, sources told ESPN. […]

Bledsoe was then told by management, according to sources, that the team had underperformed ever since he was given starting point guard responsibilities.

Bledsoe, of course, was not traded. And after an 0-3 start, he tweeted, “I don’t wanna be here.”

Suns GM Ryan McDonough then bashed Bledsoe—questioning his leadership and claiming that he was given “bad advice.”

Update: Basketball Insiders’ Michael Scotto reports that the Suns and Nuggets have discussed a trade involving Bledsoe and point guard Emmanuel Mudiay:

Update: According to Phoenix’s ABC15Sports, Bledsoe told Suns GM Ryan McDonough that his “I don’t wanna be here” tweet was in reference to a hair salon. McDonough said he “didn’t believe that to be true” and that Bledsoe “won’t be with us going forward.”

Original Story: We’re not even a week into the NBA season and the Phoenix Suns are already a mess.

Yesterday afternoon, the Suns fired head coach Earl Watson and point guard Eric Bledsoe tweeted out that he “don’t wanna be here” after an 0-3 start.

According to ESPN, Bledsoe and the Suns met before shootaround earlier this morning and Bledsoe “was sent home at the end of the discussion.”

More from ESPN:

Bledsoe, 27, will not be available for Monday’s home game against the Sacramento Kings, sources said, and rival executives are under the assumption that a trade is looming.

Suns general manager Ryan McDonough is actively engaged with several teams in trade talks for Bledsoe, league sources told ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski, and the team hopes to find a deal soon.

Interest around the NBA has increased in the past day for Bledsoe, once it became apparent that both sides are motivated to part ways, sources told Wojnarowski.

The report also states that Bledsoe had met with team owner Robert Sarver and general manager Ryan McDonough during the preseason to request a trade.

ESPN’s Ian Begley reports that the Knicks have inquired about Bledsoe:

Cavaliers star Kyrie Irving reportedly thought LeBron James wanted him out of Cleveland after hearing about a trade that would have sent him to the Phoenix Suns.

According to FS1’s Chris Broussard, the Suns offered Eric Bledsoe and the No. 4 pick for Kyrie. And the Cavaliers were reportedly going to flip the No. 4 pick for Paul George.

Kyrie thought the trade talks must have been LeBron-approved, and according to Broussard, that became “the final straw” (starting at 3:25):

“The final straw as to why [Kyrie] wants out of Cleveland… I’m told that the Cavaliers had a deal done heading into the draft.” […]

“Cleveland would send Kyrie to Phoenix, which does want Kyrie. (Suns owner) Robert Sarver wants Kyrie Irving. […] Phoenix would send Eric Bledsoe and the No. 4 pick back to the Cavaliers.

“The Cavaliers would send the No. 4 pick to Indiana for Paul George. So you’re getting Eric Bledsoe and Paul George for Kyrie Irving. Now, that was going to happen.

“Dan Gilbert goes to LeBron and goes, ‘Look, we’ve got this deal on the table. I’ll do it if you commit long-term to stay in Cleveland.’” […]

“But [LeBron] would not commit, so Dan Gilbert would not do the deal.

“Now, Kyrie Irving finds out about the deal. […] And he rightly assumed that there’s no way the Cavaliers are doing this unless LeBron gives consent.

“That’s why he got mad with LeBron. He thought LeBron was in on it.

“LeBron’s take was more, Look, I’m not trying to trade Kyrie Irving. He’s great. But that’s a heck of a deal—Eric Bledsoe and Paul George. So if you do it, hey, that’s a great deal.

“But Kyrie took it as LeBron wanted him out of there.”

The Phoenix Suns canned Jeff Hornacek late Sunday night, and say they’ll have an interim head coach in place by Tuesday. Could Steve Nash be their long-term solution on the bench?

According to multiple published reports, the team badly wants to hire the 2-time NBA MVP, but Nash—currently working for the Golden State Warriors as a player development consultant—is said to be unprepared to make such a significant career change at the momment.

Reportedly, Suns owner Robert Sarver had Nash high on his wish-list before Hornacek’s firing:

In his first full year of retirement, Nash had to be lobbied hard by some of his closest friends — Warriors coach Steve Kerr, Kerr’s assistant Bruce Fraser and Warriors team president Rick Welts — just to consent to the consulting position with Golden State. The arrangement with Golden State, sources say, calls for Nash to spend a few days per month with the league’s reigning champions.

Nash and Sarver still have a very strong relationship as well, as evidenced by the partnership they struck recently as part of the Sarver-led consortium that completed the purchase of Spanish Segunda Division soccer team RCD Mallorca earlier this month. Nash serves as a board member at RCD, with input on all soccer decisions. […] Yet sources say Nash, who turns 42 on Sunday, is reticent to take on bigger roles in basketball than he already has because of the time that would require him to be away from his family.

In addition to his work with the Warriors, Nash serves as the general manager for Canada’s senior men’s national team, after making his international debut for his country as a player while still in college and ultimately leading Canada to within one win of the medal round at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney.

Robert Sarver’s assessment of the burning wreckage that is the team he owns in Phoenix, is that it’s the damn kids’ fault.

The Suns’ owner blasts Markieff Morris for failing to get over his twin brother’s trade to Detroit, and says the team lacks a winning culture.

Head coach Jeff Hornacek is on the hot seat, and two of his assistants were canned last week.

Per the AZ Republic:

“The reality is, there’s only a half dozen championship-caliber organizations in the NBA over the last 25 years,” Sarver said. “My job is to find the right people and the right culture to eventually be one of those organizations, and it starts with me. I’m not shirking responsibility. […] The blame is to be shared from the top down. Our leadership needs to communicate better. It needs to provide a better culture that provides for more accountability and more motivation. We have a lot of good, young players. They need to be playing hard, aggressively and on the same page whether we win or lose. That’s what I expect going forward.”

Last year, the Suns allowed Marcus and Markieff Morris to act like fools without fear of repercussion. While Jerry Colangelo would’ve shipped both of them out of town on the very next flight, Sarver did the opposite. He was extraordinarily patient with the twins. […] Sarver also refused to pick up Hornacek’s option, which allowed him to enter the current season as a lame-duck coach. The ensuing chaos should not surprise anyone. And when (Jerry) Colangelo and former head coach Mike D’Antoni rolled into town together, with a one-win 76ers team that somehow beat the Suns on their home court, the outrage was palpable.

“I’m not sure it’s just the NBA,” Sarver said. “My whole view of the millennial culture is that they have a tough time dealing with setbacks, and Markieff Morris is the perfect example. He had a setback with his brother in the offseason and he can’t seem to recover from it. […] I’m not sure if it’s the technology or the instant gratification of being online. But the other thing is, I’m not a fan of social media. I tell my kids it’s like Fantasy Land. The only thing people put online are good things that happen to them, or things they make up. And it creates unrealistic expectations. We’ve had a number of setbacks this year that have taken their toll on us, and we haven’t been resilient. Therefore, it’s up to our entire organization to step up their game.”

The end of the Goran Dragic Era in Phoenix dissolved into an ugly war of words, and Dragic says he wishes that things could have been handled differently.

Dragic won in his first meeting with his old squad Monday night, leading the Miami Heat to a 115-98 victory against the visiting Suns.

Markieff Morris was ejected after flagrantly fouling his former teammate on a fastbreak.

Per the Sun-Sentinel:

“It means a lot because you always want to play good against your ex-teammates,” Dragic said. “When I was in Houston I did the same thing.” […] Two weeks ago, Dragic was traded from the Suns to Miami. Six games into his new surroundings, he got the better of the team he played with for five seasons. Dragic finished with 21 points on 5 of 9 shooting in just 15 minutes.

Dragic was fouled on a breakaway layup, causing him to take a scary (fall) underneath the basket. He landed on his back and Morris was ejected for the play. Gragic, who was dealing with back pain before the game, was surrounded by his teammates as he lay on the floor for several minutes. After shaking off the pain, he remained in the game. […] “I didn’t watch the play,” Dragic said. “I think I had a wide open layup and he just hit me. It was kind of painful but at the same time [Dwyane Wade] came to me and said, `Please stand up. They want you to be on the floor.’ I said, `Hey, you know I’m standing up.”’

Before Monday’s game, Dragic said he regretted some of the things he said publicly while requesting a trade. He never had any ill feelings toward team owner Robert Sarver. A day after the trade, Dragic even phoned Sarver to apologize. […] “I wish it would have gone differently,” Dragic said. “I’m not a guy who is going back in the past. It is what is. I’m always going to be grateful of that organization and Robert and what his family did for me.”

When asked about the grandstanding done by Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver, Gregg Popovich was ready to fire back.

Pop completely dismissed Sarver’s unhappiness with the San Antonio Spurs sitting out five players for a preseason game last Thursday, and mocked him for the apology he offered to Suns fans.

Popovich also explained why so many of his guys couldn’t play.

Per the Express-News:

“As I said, the silliness begins,” Popovich said. “Most wise individuals would check facts before they made statements. Unless you’re interested in putting on a show. In that case, the facts get in your way, as in this case.

“We had five guys we didn’t send. Patty Mills had a shoulder operation over the summer. Tiago Splitter (calf) has been out the whole preseason. Kawhi Leonard (eye infection) was out and is still out for 10 more days. The other two, Duncan and Ginobili, are two of the oldest guys in the league who just came back from a 13-day European trip.

“The only thing that surprises me is that he didn’t say it in a chicken suit. I’ll just leave it at that.”

The Phoenix Suns led by 33 points Thursday night, late in their 121-90 blowout of the short-handed San Antonio Spurs, when Suns managing partner Robert Sarver grabbed the mic.

Sarver offered an apology to the paying customers for what they’d just sat through – the Spurs sat out six players and their head coach Gregg Popovich, due to various maladies.

13,552 was the game’s listed attendance, and Suns fans who showed up are eligible for a gift certificate for tickets, merchandise or food. This was San Antonio’s first preseason game since returning from last week’s trip to Germany and Turkey.

Per the AZ Republic:

“Hey, everybody, I want to thank you for coming out tonight,” Sarver said. “This is not the game you paid your hard-earned money to watch. I apologize for it. And I want you to send me your tickets if you came tonight with a return envelope and I’ve got a gift for you on behalf of the Suns for showing up tonight. Thank you.”

“I just felt that the fans paid good money for the game and they didn’t see the players that they anticipated seeing,” Sarver said. “It was just a gesture to let them know that we appreciate their support and want to do something to compensate for that.”

It was not the first time that Sarver had a reaction to the Spurs holding out Duncan and Ginobili. In 2005, he flapped his arms like chicken wings at the Spurs bench when San Antonio chose to hold out their two stars from a regular-season game. He again drew negative social media reaction Thursday night from Spurs fans. […] “It’s not really about them (the Spurs),” Sarver said. “They control what they do. We have to control what we do.”

Restricted free agent guard Eric Bledsoe hasn’t been able to get his way (nor his money) this summer. The Phoenix Suns insist that a deal can still be worked out, but the relationship appears to be broken at the moment.

According to Phoenix sportscaster Jude LaCava, Bledsoe is now on the trading block. Per Suns blog Bright Side Of The Sun (via Fox Sports 910):

“I’ll tell you this, and I think this is the first time it’s reported,” LaCava said on Tuesday. “I do believe in my NBA sources. You can take this to the bank, so to speak, the Suns are now discussing trade possibilities for Eric Bledsoe. … That’s the new chapter to this and I wouldn’t back off of that information. I think it’s 100% correct.”

“I think it’s safe to say ‘open for business’,” LaCava said. “The decision makers, [managing partner Robert] Sarver and [PBO Lon] Babby and hopefully [GM] Ryan McDonough, they are open to that possibility. It’s got to be right. It’s got to be the right return in what they are looking for. It’s to the point that if they can accommodate Bledsoe and get something they want in return, trade possibilities are very, very real and they have been discussed.”

“That’s where the relationship went south in the early weeks last year,” LaCava said. “The guys at the top made a decision that we’re not going to extend you right away, we want to see you play first. And I think that was a bit of an affront, at least from Eric Bledsoe’s perspective. And I don’t think it ever recovered after that.”

Amid rumors of bad blood and stalled negotiations between the Phoenix Suns and restricted free agent guard Eric Bledsoe, owner Robert Sarver says the team has every intention of breaking the icy silence, and inking the 24-year old to a long-term deal.

Increasingly though, it seems as though both sides will have to settle for a $3.7 million qualifying offer (making Bledsoe an unrestricted free agent next summer.) Per the AZ Republic:

“We value Eric as a player,” Sarver said. “I hope at some point we’ll be able to sit down and meet with those guys and make a deal.”

“Maybe that’s just posturing and negotiating,” Sarver said of the reports. “We haven’t heard from the guy in four months, so I couldn’t tell you. I do know that when he played here, he felt good about the organization, his coaching staff and his teammates at the end of the season. We had the same feelings toward him.”

For what it’s worth, the Miami Heat are still considered heavy favorites to retain LeBron James’ services this summer. But even with King James currently on vacation, his agent Rich Paul is taking meetings from several teams around the NBA.

Paul has reportedly been in contact with the Phoenix Suns, Houston Rockets, Dallas Mavericks and [cue drumroll …] the Cleveland Cavaliers.

Free agency has now truly begun, folks.

Per ESPN:

Sources said that Suns owner Robert Sarver met with Paul on Wednesday and pitched the idea of luring James from the Miami Heat to the desert by trying to sign Carmelo Anthony or Chris Bosh as well.

Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert met with Paul on Thursday, a source said.

A picture that appeared to be Mavericks owner Mark Cuban in Cleveland circulated via Twitter on Thursday, but Cuban denied that he was there to meet with Paul. “I was there for a ‘Shark Tank’ commitment,” Cuban said, referencing his TV show.

Heat president Pat Riley knows he must bolster a roster that has reached the NBA Finals the last four years, but he has yet to make a splash.

LeBron James and his representatives have kept things quiet so far during this crazy time of the year, but of course, even that relative silence has once again created a circus-like atmosphere.

Donald Sterling’s 33-year ownership of the LA Clippers was stopped dead in its tracks this week, as NBA Commissioner Adam Silver banned Sterling for life after his racist comments came to light. The League’s advisory/finance committee met on Thursday to work out the process of booting Donald Sterling out. Per the AP:

The 10-member committee held a conference call to discuss “the process for termination of Donald T. Sterling’s ownership of the Los Angeles Clippers,” NBA executive vice president Mike Bass said in a statement.

“The committee unanimously agreed to move forward as expeditiously as possible and will reconvene next week.”

Silver banned Sterling for life and fined him $2.5 million Tuesday for making racist comments. Sterling can have no association with the league or the team, but Silver wants more.

A forced sale would require approval by three-fourths of the league’s 30 owners. Silver said he was confident he would get the votes.

Minnesota owner Glen Taylor chairs the committee that also includes Miami’s Micky Arison, the Lakers’ Jeanie Buss, Oklahoma City’s Clay Bennett, New York’s James Dolan, Boston’s Wyc Grousbeck, San Antonio’s Peter Holt, Phoenix’s Robert Sarver, Indiana’s Herb Simon, and Toronto’s Larry Tanenbaum.

According to the league’s constitution and bylaws, Silver or an owner would have to file a written charge against Sterling, who would have five days to respond. Silver would then call a hearing of the board of governors, which would vote after hearing the evidence against Sterling.

Sacramento Kings owner Vivek Ranadive hopes it doesn’t come to that.

“I don’t want to talk about kind of the legal side of it because I can’t really comment on it, but my feeling is that I have faith in people,” he said. “And I would hope that at some point Mr. Sterling would come to his senses and do the right thing. That he would apologize to Magic Johnson, that he would apologize to the fans, the league, the black community and he would do the right thing and he would accept what Commissioner Silver has suggested, he would put the team up for sale and perhaps even take a very small portion of the substantial profits and donate them to a good cause.

“It’s not going to be easy to own a team where the fans don’t welcome you, where the sponsors shun you and where you’re not welcomed by the other owners. And I think he can do the right thing and hopefully good sense will prevail at some point.”

According to the Phoenix Suns, they have “mutually agreed” to part ways with head coach Alvin Gentry as the team struggles through a rebuilding year. The decision was made this morning, following a loss to the Milwaukee Bucks last night. Per the AZ Republic: “The Suns have parted ways with coach Alvin Gentry after the team posted its worst record for the first half of a season in 25 years. An interim coach was not immediately known, although lead assistant coach Elston Turner would be the next in line and has been a finalist for other league head coaching jobs. The Suns lost at home Thursday night to Milwaukee for the first time in 26 years to fall to 13-28, the franchise’s worst midpoint record since the 1987-88 team went 13-28 coming out of the drug scandal. Gentry, Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver and President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby had a late-night meeting but Gentry was not let go at that time. A decision was made Friday morning. Sarver told USA Today on Dec. 11 that Gentry would be the Suns coach for the entire season.”

Rudy Gay’s name has popped up in recent trade chatter, and according to Yahoo! Sports, the Phoenix Suns are interested in acquiring the star forward from Memphis: “The Grizzlies have been shopping Gay to multiple teams, and found an interested trade partner with the Suns, sources said. There’s no framework of a possible deal in place, but the Grizzlies have expressed a strong desire that any package involving Gay include Suns forward Jared Dudley and future first-round draft picks, sources said. In an effort to avoid paying luxury tax in the short term, as well as get off the $17.8 million and $19.3 million owed Gay in the 2013-14 and 2014-15 seasons, new Memphis management has aggressively shopped Gay. […] The Suns have been mindful of their financial state under Phoenix owner Robert Sarver, and there are still doubts within the organization they will ultimately be able to absorb the remainder of Gay’s contract.”

Less than a year into his gig as Phoenix Suns president, Brad Casper announced his resignation. Casper will be replaced by Jason Rowley. Reports the AZ Republic: “Brad Casper, the former head of Dial Corp., resigned as Suns president after nine months on the job. Chief Operating Officer Jason Rowley will assume the role of president overseeing the Suns’ business operations. ‘I enjoyed my time with the Suns,’ Casper said in a prepared statement issued by the Suns. ‘It was a wonderful opportunity for me, but ultimately serving the Suns while continuing to juggle a portfolio of other business interests became too much. I’m grateful to have worked with so many gifted professionals and I look forward to cheering on the team next season.’ Welts had run the Suns’ business side for nine years before resigning in September, 10 months before his contract expired. Eleven days later, Welts accepted the same position as president and chief operating officer for Golden State. Rowley, who served as the Suns executive vice president and general counsel for four years, was promoted to executive vice president and served as interim president before Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver selected Casper to be president. Sarver said Casper was overqualified for the position and was following a NBA trend in the business of tapping into the corporate world for someone who brought more business experience in brand management, customer satisfaction and international marketing.”

There were some important factors in Steve Nash’s decision to sign with the Los Angeles Lakers over his other suitors from around the NBA: the money ($27 million over three years), Kobe Bryant (Nash and KB spoke this week about playing together), and the opportunity to win a championship before he retires.

Most important of all for Steve Nash, though, is the chance to stay close to his children (who reside in Phoenix) now that he will be living and working in Los Angeles.

Nash explained the move to Hollywood, in a statement provided to ESPN:

“After talking with (owner) Robert (Sarver) and (president of basketball operations) Lon (Babby) we’ve agreed that it’s time for both of us to move in new directions. I approached them and asked if they would be willing to do a sign and trade deal with L.A. because it is very important to me to stay near my children and family. They were very apprehensive and didn’t want to do it. Fortunately for me, they reconsidered. They saw that they were able to get assets for their team that will make them better, assets they would not have otherwise had and it made sense for them to do a deal that helps their team get better.”

“I couldn’t be more grateful to the organization and Robert in particular. I know how hard this was for him and that fact that he was able to help me and my family in this way … it means a lot and says a lot about his character. I will never forget this gesture. Above and beyond. The Phoenix Suns are an amazing organization and fans should be excited about their future. I hope the Suns win a championship some day soon for all the amazing fans and wonderful people in the organization.”

According to the report, Ramon Sessions — who opted out of his contract in search of a longer, richer deal — is no longer in the Lakers’ plans going forward.

L.A. will reportedly keep the core of Kobe Bryant, Pau Gasol, Andrew Bynum and Steve Nash together next season as the organization looks to get back into NBA title contention.

The 2011-12 Phoenix Suns were one of the teams that those on the east coast didn’t quite understand how good they were unless they were staying up until the wee hours of the night catching games on League Pass. Finishing with an even 33-33 record and just three games out of the Playoffs, coach Alvin Gentry saved his job with the excellent work that he was able to do with pieces left over from the D’Antoni regime. Now it’s time to bring his own guys in.

Steve Nash and Grant Hill are unrestricted free agents. Vince Carter, Mickael Pietrus, and Shannon Brown all come off of the books as well. This leaves the Suns with essentially no backcourt and around $30 million to spend this off-season, though owner Robert Sarver has publicly said that they may consider hanging on to some of that cap flexibility for the future. While Nash has openly expressed his love for Phoenix and desire to return, many have questioned whether he wants to chase that ring for a year with a contender or possibly head back North of the border to end his career with the Raptors.

While the frontcourt has bodies, they only guy who seems like the long term answer is 7-foot Polish center Marcin Gortat. Coming off of a career year with averages of 15 and 10, Gortat is looking like he could wind up developing into an all-star caliber center in the west. The power forward position has no definite solution as Channing Frye and Markieff Morris both had major ups and downs throughout the previous season.

So after looking over the entire roster and deciding what was best for the franchise long term, the pick is in.

With the 13th pick of the SLAMonline Mock Draft, the Phoenix Suns select…

Perry Jones from Baylor.

Scoring guards Austin Rivers and Dion Waiters also got strong looks here, but Jones simply had too much talent and potential to pass up. There was definitely a glaring need in the backcourt and while tough to ignore, the Suns had to swing for the fences, and this 6-11 sophomore was the guy.

Capable of playing both the small forward and power forward positions, the Dallas native gives Phoenix the flexibility to move him all over the court. If you want to use him as a pick-and-pop big (where I think he fits best), he’s definitely going to be an upgrade from last year’s lottery pick, Markieff Morris. Some feel that he has Paul George potential on the perimeter but while the physical attributes are present, there’s definite room for refinement before he’s going to be playing swingman full-time.

Now of course, there were concerns. Anyone who has seen Perry play know that he has just as much potential, if not more, than anyone not named Anthony Davis in this year’s Draft—yet he rarely put it all together in Waco. The inconsistencies the former McDonald’s All-American displayed drew him heavy criticism from both the fans and media alike. There were flashes, though. The 31-point explosion late in the year versus Kansas State and the 28-point domination he put on tough non-conference foe BYU gave everyone a peek of how unique a talent he was. Then the two games in NCAA tourney when he finished with 9 points combined left you scratching your head as to what you were going to get.

Ultimately, Phoenix Suns GM Lance Blanks and head coach Alvin Gentry should decide that the chance to obtain the next star to don the orange and purple makes more sense than to go with a safer bet, so we can all be sit back and play the waiting game on Mr. Jones in PHX.

There are no plans to trade Steve Nash from the Suns, and the team owner seems to like the chances of Nash re-signing with Phoenix when he becomes a free agent this summer. From the AZ Republic: “There is no urgency to trade Steve Nash before the March 15 deadline. Robert Sarver said he gave his point guard lifts to and from the All-Star Game, and the private flights did not include trade scenarios. This is a dangerous strategy if Nash leaves in the summer, when most of the second-tier free agents that would be in the Suns’ grasp aren’t worth the newsprint, especially when it could mean sending Gentry into the final year of his contract without a franchise player and even less talent than he has this season. Yet Sarver said he likes his chances to re-sign Nash after the season. ‘I think those odds are probably pretty good,’ Sarver said. ‘I think he likes the organization. His family lives here. He’s had tremendous success with the organization. He’s still playing well. Listen, he’s a free agent (after the season) and has the ability to look around. But I wouldn’t rule him out continuing here.'”

Robert Sarver read through the NBA schedule last night when it was released, and he’s not happy that many of the Eastern Conference’s top teams won’t be making their way to Phoenix, since that represents a big financial loss at the ticket counter. From the Arizona Republic: “Phoenix is the only team that will not have a home game this season against Boston, Chicago, Miami, New York or Orlando. ‘I was disappointed for our fans,’ Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver said. ‘When the preliminary schedule came out, I asked the league to reconsider and they didn’t. You’ve got to factor in all the arenas and timelines, and they weren’t able to move dates around.’ Although some West teams are visiting only once this season, Phoenix will get two home games against the Lakers, Mavericks, Clippers and Spurs, Sarver noted. Eleven of the other 14 West teams play at least three of those five top East teams at home. Golden State and Oklahoma City host all five attendance boosters. Houston did not fare much better than Phoenix, getting New York at home but not Boston, Chicago, Miami or Orlando. ‘For the most part, the schedule is computer-generated by a consulting firm that does schedules for the NHL and NBA,’ Sarver said. ‘Unfortunately for us, given the short schedule, we’re not going to see some of the elite teams in the East.’ The Suns will be on ESPN or ESPN2 nine times this season and twice on TNT (home vs. Dallas and the Clippers).”

Steve Nash admits that both sides are being greedy and selfish, but says there’s a point to it all, despite fans’ understandable anger and frustration. From the Arizona Republic: “You have two wealthy sides arguing over percentage points,’ Nash said. ‘It’s hard for fans to understand that this is a business. I don’t blame them. If I were in their shoes, I’d be critical, frustrated or even angry. You just want to see the game you love. Both sides are arguing for inevitably selfish reasons, but also for what’s right when they are gone. It’s a big mess.’ A new collective-bargaining agreement, which could last 10 years, won’t benefit the 37-year-old much. The 30 days of season that have been canceled would cost Nash $2 million in salary if no days are restored. He said his loyalty is to future players. The players union reportedly has fractures, but Nash contends it is solid. ‘It’s strange, because it’s never been the most stable group,’ Nash said. Nash’s future in Phoenix remains a constant topic because of his age and the Suns’ decline. A September retweet by Nash sparked more speculation. ESPN.com writer Bill Simmons had a Twitter rant that included criticism of Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver for his role in the lockout. One Simmons tweet stated, ‘Sarver overpaid for team, spent last few years slicing $$$$ and turned Suns fans against him. Not he wants to blow up the system? Go away.’ Former Suns guard Jason Richardson tweeted attention to the ‘good points,’ and Nash retweeted that. It was taken as defiance. ‘Robert and I will have to have a nice talk to clear the air when this is over,’ Nash said. ‘I have nothing personal against Robert. I know I appear critical of him by retweeting that. But when we go back to work, I’m a Phoenix Sun through and through. Right now, I’m on the other side of the table from him. We have fans criticizing us every day and owners making us out to be the bad guys. At some point, you want to make sure your point of view is expressed.'”

After Rick Welts’ resignation, the Phoenix Suns were left with a void at the ever-important position of Team President. Until earlier today, that is, when they hired Brad Casper to fill the role. Some details via the Arizona Republic: “When Brad Casper arrived in the Valley in 2005 to run Dial Corp., he wound up at his second NBA basketball game in two decades and was hooked. It was during the Suns’ conference finals run, one he likened to growing up in Cincinnati around the Big Red Machine era. The courtside experience prompted him to tell Suns Vice Chairman Sam Garvin, ‘I’d like to have your job.’ Garvin is staying, but the notion never left, especially when Rick Welts resigned as Suns president as chief executive officer last month for personal and professional reasons (and ultimately became Golden State’s president). Casper, with the experience of running a $2 billion company, will now run the Suns’ business operations as president. The interim president, former legal counsel Jason Rowley, becomes the Suns’ chief operating officer. Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver said his focus turned toward Casper after a recent NBA ownership meeting in which Miami Heat owner Micky Arison asked new Philadelphia 76ers owner Joshua Harris how he recruited an executive with the stature of Adam Aron, the CEO of Vail Resorts and Norwegian Cruise Lines, to be his team’s CEO. It was Aron’s passion for the 76ers.  ‘That got my wheels going in terms of maybe we could set our sights higher in terms of business experience and maybe there is a chance to bring someone in here who, because of his passion for the product, would be willing to come into a position that he’s overqualified for,’ Sarver said. ‘Brad brings a level of experience we’re fortunate to have, given an organization our size. He’s run companies 10 times our size. His breadth of experience in brand management, customer satisfaction and marketing is a big-time addition. He also has a lot of experience in international marketing, the fastest growing part of the NBA. His depth in branding and marketing is something we never had before.'”

Rick Welts, who’s been in the news quite a bit this year, is joining the Golden State Warriors as President and COO. His former employer, the Phoenix Suns, gave him a nice recommendation. From the AZ Republic: “The Golden State Warriors spent their summer conducting a national search for a new president and chief operating officer. Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver called this month to tell them who they should hire — his outgoing president and CEO. Eleven days after his nine-year stint of running the Suns’ business ended, Rick Welts accepted a job to run the Warriors’ business operations. The hire came a week after his first conversation with new Golden State owner Joe Lacob. ‘He (Sarver) really was the one who initiated the conversation on my behalf,’ Welts said after the hiring was announced Monday night. ‘I had been looking forward to doing different things but the opportunity with this team and this market worked so well for me geographically. I was not able to pass that up and I couldn’t be more ecstatic.’ Welts, 58, announced he was leaving the Suns on Sept. 9 to get his professional and personal lives aligned. He said he was asking out of his Suns contract 10 months early in order to be closer to his partner, who has joint custody of two children in Sacramento. In May, Welts became the highest-ranking executive in men’s sports to announce that he is gay. Upon announcing he was resigning from the Suns, Welts said he planned to do speaking engagements and was considering offers to write a book about his life.”

A media report yesterday claimed that Cleveland’s Dan Gilbert (along with the Suns’ Robert Sarver) were two of the owners strongly opposed to meeting the NBA players’ association halfway during negotiations. Gilbert used Twitter to express his unhappiness with the media. The Plain Dealer breaks it down: “Cavaliers owner Dan Gilbert used his Twitter account last night to angrily respond to reports that he helped derail potential progress in the NBA labor negotiations. In the process, it appears he also invented a word to describe his online detractors. ‘Some of these NBA ‘bloggissists’ flat-out make stuff up and hen try to dupe readers into believing their fiction is real. Sad & pathetic,’ Gilbert wrote. An ESPN.com story, citing anonymous sources, stated that Gilbert and Phoenix’s Robert Sarver expressed discontent with many points of a proposal from the players union during a meeting Tuesday in New York. According to the report, owners were seriously considering ‘coming off their demands for a salary freeze and would allow players’ future earnings to be tied into the league’s revenue growth, a critical point for players. The owners also were willing to allow the players to maintain their current salaries without rollbacks,’ sources said.”

Rick Welts, who came out of the closet earlier this year, is stepping own from his position with the Phoenix Suns. Here’s the official release from the team:

PHOENIX – Rick Welts will leave his position as President & CEO of the Phoenix Suns effective September 15, announced today by Welts and Suns Managing Partner, Robert Sarver. Sarver also announced that the Suns business organization will report to General Counsel, Jason Rowley, as the team launches a national search for the position of President. Lon Babby remains the President of Basketball Operations.

Welts joined the Suns in 2002 as President and had the additional title of CEO the past two seasons. Rowley came to the Suns in 2008 as General Counsel.

“I’m at a point in my life where my focus is to align my personal and professional life in a way I’ve never been able to achieve before,” said Welts. “The most important people in my personal life are not in Phoenix, and the Suns have been completely understanding and supportive of my request to leave in advance of the end of my contract.”

“My nine-plus years at the Suns have been incredibly rewarding thanks to a group of employees second to none in professional sports and the support of great ownership,” Welts continued. “The Suns organization has always been a special place to work, and I leave knowing that will continue to be true in the future.”

Sarver said, “The entire Suns organization thanks Rick for his tireless work on behalf of the Suns. While he will be missed, we understand his desire to relocate outside of Arizona for personal reasons. We have a very talented executive team including Jason Rowley, whose familiarity with the Suns organization will allow him to manage the business operations seamlessly as we conduct our search for a new team president. Our search will include both internal and external candidates.”

Welts has worked in the NBA virtually his entire life, starting as a ball kid with the Seattle Supersonics in 1967 and including a 17-year stint at the NBA League Office in New York City, where he left in 1999 as Executive Vice President and Chief Marketing Officer.

In a front-page New York Times story on May 16 of this year, Welts revealed he was gay, the most senior professional sports executive ever to take that step.

“The response from fans, co-workers, players and ownership of the Suns to my announcement has been the most gratifying experience of my life, one for which I will forever be grateful,” added Welts.

On an unassuming side street in Fresno, Calif., a couple miles from the hustle and bustle of the city’s downtown, sits the person who may know more about the NBA lockout than anyone else.

Rhoda Goldfarb-Palowski, who prefers to be called by her professional name, Miss Sage, has focused her psychic powers on NBA affairs for decades now, and burnished her reputation by predicting the results of 15 of the last 20 NBA Finals and at least five Larry Brown firings.

Last week we provided Miss Sage with a snip of hair from James Dolan’s goatee and a pair of Shawn Marion’s game-used socks to connect her with both sides of the labor dispute. After meditating for several minutes, she kindly agreed to provide SLAMonline with her exclusive NBA lockout predictions. They are provided below:

June 30: NBA owners lock out players over labor dispute

July 6: LeBron James ponders league official Adam Silver’s negative comments about his 10 percent raise; concludes the lockout is all about him. Issues statement thanking the little people.

July 8: NBA officials make “off the record” statements blaming lockout on players being “uppity,” without actually using the word uppity. (1)

July 8: Players union responds with a press release saying they’re just dealing with the situation one insult at a time.

July 10: Players union asks veterans to “do what they can” to help lower-salaried players. Steve Nash and Jason Kidd decide to stage fundraising game. LeBron James realizes request was all about him; agrees to make a brief appearance at the fundraiser but only if Maverick Carter is made official organizer of the event.

July 11: Kevin Garnett takes redeye to New Orleans to procure a David Stern voodoo doll and a pack of surgical needles.

July 15: First major article published about remote possibility of fan anger, player retirements, rise of Chinese league, and defections to European teams ruining the NBA for years.

July 16: NBA threatens to pull media pass of whoever writes the story first.

July 21: Peer pressure and badgering from Stern forces Michael Jordan to make statement of solidarity with NBA owners.

July 28: Nike launches new Jordan brand shoe called “Air GOP,” just in time for the start of back-to-school shopping. Nike claims complaints about the $250 price tag and lack of quality are unpatriotic. Women’s line called “Air Condi” also planned.

August 1: Owners publicly contemplate walking out of negotiations because of players “not knowing their place.” Players union responds with statement that they’re taking the lockout one negotiating session at a time.

August 4: Kevin Garnett notably absent during day’s negotiations. David Stern is plagued by mysterious piercing pains and cuts session short.

August 5: NBA owners retain little-known Washington communications firm G.G. Liddy & Associates.

August 9: Adrian Wojnarowski of Yahoo! Sports breaks story about certain unnamed owners urging an end to the lockout. ESPN’s Ric Bucher, while writing the same story, gets up to use the men’s room. Upon returning he finds his story gone, and the file replaced by a copy of Bambi.

August 12: ESPN runs story about spoiled basketball players having to sell their Bentleys.

August 13: Kenny Anderson announces he’s incredibly available for interviews.

August 14: First report of NBA player turning an ankle during summer workout leads to rampant speculation about injuries during partial, strike-shortened training camp and compressed regular season.

August 20: Fox News, ABC and ESPN Radio mention players’ alleged caviar intake during the lockout.

September 3: Media reports surface about the possibility of a new league forming. Isaiah Thomas, Mark Cuban, and W. Mark Felt are rumored to be involved.

September 4: Yahoo! publishes story documenting greater concern by owners over length of the lockout.

September 7: ESPN runs story on the tough road and many obstacles faced by NBA owners, complete with B-roll of Michael Heisley and Jerry Reinsdorf staring contemplatively into space.

September 12: Pacers owner Herb Simon suggests hiring a high-powered mediator like Earl Warren to settle the dispute.

September 23: Dallas Mavericks teammates DeShawn Stevenson, Jason Terry and Brian Cardinal reportedly spotted at Rick Ross concert. New York Daily News reports they are unconcerned with the lockout.

September 24: NBA owners Clayton Bennett, Robert Sarver and Leslie Alexander spotted at Ted Nugent concert. ABC reports owners need relaxation after stressful negotiating sessions, shows footage of them dancing to “Yank Me, Crank Me.”

September 26: New York Daily News reports Brian Cardinal seen at Ted Nugent concert.

Week of October 10: The six largest medical marijuana growers all report record-breaking third quarter earnings; cite unexpected rise in prescriptions for calf strains and sore quadriceps. NBA players issue statement that they’re just taking the lockout one calf strain at a time.

October 21: G. Gordon Liddy arrested in Argentina. List found in his pocket includes the names Billy Hunter, Kevin Garnett, W. Mark Felt, Tony Randall and Adrian Wojnarowski. LeBron James implies his name was on the list, but his inclusion is too explosive for the police to mention.

October 25: Rumors circulate that Cavs owner Dan Gilbert is pondering entrée into the medical marijuana business.

November 21: LeBron James tweets that he will be at the next day’s negotiating session.

November 22: LeBron James stands alone in a corner of the conference room during negotiations with owners, waiting for Derek Fisher and Billy Hunter to cede the floor to him.

November 25: ESPN’s Marc Stein reports lockout nearing end.

December 1: Lockout officially ends.

December 1: LeBron James tweets a thank you to the little people.

December 3: Just in time for holiday shopping, Nike teams with Rockport on new LeBron “Game 6 Edition” shoe, made for maximum comfort while standing around the perimeter.

December 20: One week into the regular season, a compressed schedule forces teams to go deeper into the bench. With extra minutes and weaker defenses, two rookies score 20 points in a game on the same night, prompting a spate of articles about the 2011 draft class being better than expected. “I keep in touch with a lot of the rookies, and we all talk about how everyone underrated us,” says Kawhi Leonard of the San Antonio Spurs. “But right now we’re just taking it one game at a time.”

Notes:

–(1) This prediction came true, albeit a few days before Miss Sage said it would, during David Stern’s press conference at the beginning of the lockout.

–Goldfarb-Palowski isn’t the only member of her family to be involved in the NBA. Her brother, Monty Goldfarb, is the official hairpiece provider for New Jersey Nets television broadcasts.

— Any relation between Miss Sage and actual events are purely coincidental, and like an offseason calf strain, her predictions should be used for recreational and entertainment purposes only.

This is satire. Any attempt to pretend it is not satire will be as indefensible as this.

by Dennis Tarwood / @tuffyr

At this point in the Draft, Phoenix Suns owner Robert Sarver and President of Basketball Operations Lon Babby have plotzed. They cannot believe their luck. Bob is sketching the season ticket package cover on the back of his draft sheet while giggling like a psycho schoolgirl. Lon’s rolling the draft whiteboard out of the war room and down a flight of stairs. Won’t need that anymore!

Hell, even Alvin Gentry has joined the fun by ripping the defensive page of the Suns’ playbook out of the binder, tossing it into a metal wastebasket, and flicking lit matches inside. For the Phoenix Suns will now draft the nascent face of the franchise; the savior of the season ticket plan; the adrenaline injection into the heart of the offense:

With the 13th pick in the 2011 SLAMonline Mock Draft, the Phoenix Suns select…

Jimmer Fredette from Brigham Young University.

Welcome home, son.

The Jimmer is the antidote to apathy from Suns fans after a disappointing season by their standards. A Phoenix fan base that idolizes Steve Nash and held an outsized affection for Lou Amundson will pull Fredette to its wizened bosom without hesitation. Utah Jazz games at US Airways Center are often overrun by Utah fans, so he might even widen the season ticket base before he ever hoists a casual 35-footer professionally.

He’s even stated an affection for the Suns, telling reporters this week “(the Suns) are the type of team I’d like to play for.” One bat of those whole milk-fed eyelashes and Phoenix fans will go weak in the knees. Imagine if he also played basketball!

Admittedly, those fans will be as weak in the knees as Fredette trying to guard anyone with a greater lateral range than a birch tree in a stiff breeze. His affectionate wave applies to fans and men who have just sprinted by him with the ball. He only raises his hands to shoot, demand the ball, and ask to use the washroom during team meetings. He couldn’t defend the steamed vegetable tray at a barbecue competition. And so on.

Oh, and did we mention Jimmer hates carpooling because he can’t drive with someone that close to him? Is that piling on?

It just doesn’t matter, though. He can flash that utterly disarming smile and woo a suit just as well as a tween girl. His jacktastic offensive prowess fits snugly into the Suns’ current construction, allowing him to immediately adopt the Goran Dragic/Aaron Brooks role as second team helmsman. Brooks’ days would seem to be numbered in Phoenix if this public relations la petite mort came to pass, though one could justify Brooks’ reckless driving alongside Fredette’s laser sight for the basket in a teensy second team.

Eventually, Fredette would be marked the heir apparent for Nash, assuming Nash ever shows an inkling of desire to leave Arizona or the League. Being heir apparent to Nash brings theoretical promise of mentoring but ends up a lousy career move in the long run as you can’t replace someone who never leaves. Ask Dragic.

Of course, none of this fully addresses the remainder of the damage done during last offseason’s attempt to collect every small forward in the L as if they were 6-7 Pokémon. It also doesn’t prop back up Lopez the Lesser’s career nor does it acquire someone who can pull in a rebound better than that whiteboard at the bottom of the stairwell.

But one step at a time. First, save the season ticket sales. Then… actually, the Suns are kinda focused on Step 1 right now. Can you get back to them?

The Suns‘ rough start to the season has some wondering if Nash should be moved, something the team’s head coach can’t even fathom happening. From the AZ Republic: “Nash envisions playing beyond this contract but how much losing would he be willing to endure in Phoenix at this stage? Nash has been blunt with his frustration that the Suns were a step away from the NBA Finals last season, only to have the team made over  in the summer and the reliance fall on him to make it work. ‘I don’t know,’ Nash said of whether losing would change his perspective on a trade. ‘It was a pretty frustrating year two years ago and I re-signed because I felt like we had unfinished business. Dreaming big would be to go to the Western Conference Finals and have a chance to beat the Lakers. We got back and did that. Now we’re kind of starting at the bottom again but let’s see what we can do. Let’s see how good we can get.’ At that point after Wednesday’s practice, Suns coach Alvin Gentry got his point guard’s back twice. He stepped in to end Nash’s interview and then he made out trade speculators to be ridiculous. ‘Steve’s not going to be traded, that I can tell you,’ Gentry said. ‘If he’s getting traded, I’m going along with him, OK? Have you looked at the way he’s playing? He’s playing at a real high level. Why would we trade him? I don’t understand that. That’s nothing that’s been discussed here. It’s not going to happen. Or at least all those guys out there on the coaching staff are going to make sure that it doesn’t happen and I don’t think Lon (Babby) and Lance (Blanks) are going to let it happen. So who the hell is going to trade him? Not Robert (Sarver), I know that.’ Gentry was a bit worked up about the topic. ‘Steve is here,’ he said. ‘Steve is the face of our franchise and he’s here. Make sure that gets on every telecast and every radio and everything that you guys got out there.'”

Phoenix has given Gentry the vote of confidence. The AZ Republic reports: “When Suns President Lon Babby hired Lance Blanks to be his general manager this summer, he said Blanks would be on board for as long as he was. Now the same can be said for Alvin Gentry. The coach that the new Suns front office inherited now has its hearty endorsement. Gentry signed a one-year contract extension that puts him and Babby under contract for the next three years. The Suns picked up an option on Gentry in June that guaranteed half of his salary for 2011-12, with the rest subject to a lockout season. That move followed the departure of then-GM Steve Kerr, who asked Managing Partner Robert Sarver to pick up Gentry’s option and add a contract year.”

Larry Ellison was surprisingly outbid for the rights to the Warriors. Report CNBC and CSN on the record-setting sale: “The price for the team is $450 million, beating the previous NBA record—$401 million, which was the amount Robert Sarver paid for the Phoenix Suns in 2004. Lacob and Guber beat out rival bidder Larry Ellison, chief executive officer of Oracle  Lacobs bought a share of the Boston Celtics in 2006. The sale was brokered by Galatioto Sports Partners, which has been involved in the recent sale of the Charlotte Bobcats and Chicago Cubs. The Warriors franchise, which was bought by Chris Cohan in 1995 for $119 million, was valued at $315 million by Forbes in December of last year, but the Warriors’ location in the Bay area undoubtedly added more interest and thus a higher price.”

According to Paul Coro of the Arizona Republic, Stoudemire declined a five-year, $96 million offer with minutes-played stipulations: “The eight-year Amar’e Stoudemire era in Phoenix is apparently over. Stoudemire declined a five-year Suns offer that could have been worth up to $96 million, prompting the Suns to quickly secure free agent power forward Hakim Warrick with a four-year agreement worth as much as $18 million. Stoudemire, whose talks with New York and others are accelerating, had told the Suns that he would not sign a deal for fewer than five years after Phoenix offered a four-year maximum deal worth about $80 million. Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver countered Thursday with a five-year offer that fully guaranteed the first three years and had the fourth and fifth years kick in fully guaranteed if he played at least 2,200 minutes in the third or fourth seasons.”

Word out of Arizona is that Stoudemire and the Suns aren’t exactly seeing eye-to-eye. From the AZ Republic: “It is true that the odds of Stoudemire returning to the Suns have become longer but Stoudemire’s agent, Happy Walters, said he is open to talking more with Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver at any time. Suns coach Alvin Gentry talked to Stoudemire on Wednesday and Walters had said that he spoke twice to the Suns on Wednesday as well. ‘It’s nothing adversarial,’ Walters said. ‘We’re really not that close to an agreement. If Robert calls me, I will always take the call.’ Two sources have said that Stoudemire would have taken a five-year contract offer if it had been made by the Suns. Walters has said Stoudemire is only interested in a deal with at least five years. One report had Phoenix making a five-year deal but that could have been including a team option or injury stipulations. There are mixed ideas of how ardently other teams will pursue him. Some league sources think many teams will have the same concerns about his knee history that Phoenix does while others wonder if the effect of a team like New York possibly missing out on the top tier of free agents would prompt it to pursue Stoudemire more aggressively.”

Sir Charles says he’d listen to the Suns if they were to come calling about the opening in their front office, and already has some ideas about who to sign (or not). From the Arizona Republic: “It’s a wonderful time to renew old vows. ‘I don’t think it’s a good job right now,’ Barkley said. ‘But I would listen to the Suns because I love Phoenix. I would listen to Robert (Sarver) out of respect for working in Phoenix. But I’ll be honest: I would not re-sign Amar’e Stoudemire.’ That’ll get the owner’s attention. ‘I wouldn’t do it for three reasons,’ Barkley said. ‘One, his knees; two, his eyes; and three, he wants a maximum deal. Now, he’s a terrific player. Don’t get me wrong. But at this stage of his career he’s never been the best player on his team. That’s not a max player.’ It is a summer of great upheaval in the NBA. LeBron James could jilt the city of Cleveland, a move that would be cowardly and ignoble. Stoudemire and Joe Johnson could rejoin Mike D’Antoni in New York, a city that would scoff at being served Phoenix reruns. And if the right situation comes along, Barkley wouldn’t hesitate to bolt his comfortable chair at TNT in order to run his own NBA franchise.”

The post Here Come Los Suns appeared first on SLAM.

by Dave Zirin

A battle has been joined for the very soul of Arizona. On one side, there are the Minutemen, the craven state Republican lawmakers, Governor Jan Brewer, and the utterly unprincipled John McCain, all supporting SB 1070, a law that codifies racial profiling of immigrants in the state. On the other are the Sun Belt residents who protested on May 1st, the students who have engaged in walkouts, and the politicians and civic leaders calling for an economic boycott of their own state.

This battle has also been joined in the world of sports. On one side is Major League Baseball’s Arizona Diamondbacks. Owned by state Republican moneyman Ken Kendrick, the team has drawn protesters to parks around the country. On the other side, we now have the Phoenix Suns. On Tuesday the news came forth that today, on Cinco de Mayo, the team will be wearing jerseys that say simply Los Suns. Team owner Robert Sarver said, after talking to the team, that this will be an act of sartorial solidarity against the bill. Their opponent, the San Antonio Spurs, have made clear that they support the gesture.

In a statement released by the team, Sarver said, “The frustration with the federal government’s failure to deal with the issue of illegal immigration resulted in passage of a flawed state law. However intended, the result of passing this law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question, and Arizona’s already struggling economy will suffer even further setbacks at a time when the state can ill-afford them.”

He followed up the statement by saying to reporters, “I looked around our plane and looked at our players and the diversity in our organization. I thought we need to go on record that we honor our diversity in our team, in the NBA and we need to show support for that. As for the political part of that, that’s my statement. There are times you need to stand up and be heard. I respect people’s views on the other side but I just felt it was appropriate for me to stand up and make a statement.”

After Sarver spoke out, the team chimed in against the passage and signing of SB 1070.

Two-time MVP point guard Steve Nash, who in 2003 became the first athlete to go on record against the Iraq war said, “I think the law is very misguided. I think it is unfortunately to the detriment to our society and our civil liberties and I think it is very important for us to stand up for things we believe in. I think the law obviously can target opportunities for racial profiling. Things we don’t want to see and don’t need to see in 2010.”

All-Star power forward Amar’e Stoudemire, who has no political reputation, also chimed in saying, “It’s going to be great to wear Los Suns to let the Latin community know we’re behind them 100 percent.”

After the story broke, I spoke on the phone with NBA Players Association Presdient Billy Hunter about the Suns audacious move.

“It’s phenomenal,” he said. “This makes it clear to me that it’s a new era. It’s a new time. Athletes can tend to be apolitical and isolated from the issues that impact the general public. But now here come the Suns. I would have expected nothing less from Steve Nash who has been out front on a number of issues over the years. I also want to recognize Amare. I know how strident Amare can be and I’m really impressed to see him channel his intensity. It shows a tremendous growth and maturity on his part. And I have to applaud Bob Sarver because he is really taking a risk by putting himself out there. I commend them. I just think it’s super.”

Hunter said that the union would have their own statement out by the end of the week.

This kind of political intervention by a sports team is without precedent, and now every athlete and every team has an opening to stand up and be heard. Because when it’s all said and done, this isn’t just a battle for the soul of Arizona. It’s a battle for the soul of the United States.

Here come the Suns indeed.

The Phoenix Suns hope to send a message tonight. Yes, they want to send a message to the San Antonio Spurs, but more importantly, they want to send a political one.

As the Suns announced earlier: “Robert Sarver decided – with unanimous support from his players – that the Suns would wear their “Los Suns” jerseys for Game 2 tonight on Cinco de Mayo, a Mexican holiday. The gesture, which came with the blessing of the NBA and the league’s players union, reflects Sarver’s belief that passing Senate Bill 1070 was not ‘the right way to handle the immigration problem, Number 1,’ he said. ‘Number 2, as I read through the bill, it felt to me a little bit like it was mean-spirited, and I personally just don’t agree with it.’ Arizona sports teams and events have become targets for protests and calls for boycotts since SB 1070 was signed into law by Gov. Jan Brewer on April 23. The law makes it a state crime to be in Arizona without proper documents and requires local police to check the legal status of suspected undocumented immigrants.”

We live in a soundbite culture.  We take 10 seconds from the top of a 10-hour debate and use them as the foundation of our understanding because we haven’t the time, care, or some combination thereof to dig further.

The superficial conclusions we draw often favor sensitivity.  If the matter is controversial, we must choose the most seemingly inoffensive alternative to suppress our greatest fear: the bad within us.  It’s a nonpartisan feeling, for to Seth MacFarlane, a liberal and a comedic visionary, and Connie Mack, a conservative Congressman, that bad is our inner Nazi, our inner Gestapo.

S.B. 1070 in 10 seconds: … reasonable suspicion exists that … person is an alien who is unlawfully present … reasonable attempt … to determine the immigration status …

No, Suns President Robert Sarver didn’t go so far as to suggest governmental thuggery of foreign regimes past, but his fear was palpable: “… the result of passing the law is that our basic principles of equal rights and protection under the law are being called into question.”  Steve Nash was equally cautionary and temperate: “I think the law is very misguided … I think the law obviously can target opportunities for racial profiling.  Things we don’t want to see and don’t need to see in 2010.”

They had to speak out on this.  They had to assure their supporters, Arizonans, Americans, Earthlings — most importantly, themselves — that Governor Jan Brewer and the legislature didn’t reflect the views of the Phoenix Suns.  They had to disassociate themselves from a surely existent stigma that “people around the world and around the country look at our state as less than equal, less than fair,” Nash said.

Trail Blazers Suns BasketballSo all further apologetic words from players and team officials were superfluous when a mere moniker, Los Suns, a bit of Spanglish one step above “mano y mano”, would succinctly strike the right tone.  These uniforms, once reserved for designated noches Latinas to recognize the Hispanic public in select media markets, would serve as a political battle cry, yes, but also “let the Latin community know we’re behind them 100 percent,” said Amar’e Stoudemire.

Solidarity.  Sarver and Nash; GM Steve Kerr, who said on behalf of his organization, “… we don’t agree with the law itself;” even Billy Hunter, executive director of the National Basketball Players Association, whose comments were among the most forthright of any League personnel: “Any attempt to encourage, tolerate or legalize racial profiling is offensive and incompatible with basic notions of fairness and equal protection;” all of them have entrenched themselves as ‘of the people’.

And they’re misguided.  Only 36 percent of Americans agree with them, and this minority retains no moral absolutism — the law is at least debatable, and the majority of the public aren’t xenophobic kooks.

Go beyond the 10 seconds.  Fill in the ellipses.  It’s the difference between, … reasonable suspicion that … person is an alien who is unlawfully present … reasonable attempt … to determine the immigration status … — the disturbing essence of a would-be police-state decree — and, For any legitimate contact made by an official where reasonable suspicion exists that the person is an alien who is unlawfully present in the United States, a reasonable attempt shall be made, when practicable, to determine the immigration status of the person

The latter is restrictive; ‘legitimate contact’ in this context is compelled by the possibility of a legal infraction, and no legal document applicable in the state of Arizona even implies that the possession of a particular skin color is a legal infraction.  From the same chunk of language italicized above, Sec. 2, item B: A law enforcement official … may not solely consider race, color or national origin in implementing the requirements of this subsection except to the extent permitted by the United States or Arizona Constitution.  In other words, the question of immigration status is step B or beyond of any encounter between a person and law enforcement.

Does that mean officers will find ways to manufacture step As?  That depends upon the number of overzealous Arizona patrolmen willing to pull someone over for doing 58 in a 55, which, by most any reasonable guess, is small — the outliers of the equation as likely to affect Christophers as they are Cristobals.

But we fear the worst, and that’s why the attention-grabbing 10 seconds will always elicit more emotion and response than the remaining nine hours, 59 minutes and 50 seconds of the debate.  That’s why Sarver, Nash, et al had to go out of their ways to voice their concerns, because given America’s checkered history with race relations and our modern, national paranoia to fervently guard against perceptions of marginalizing others, we have to vocalize or make recordable our reassurances that everyone in this country plays on the same team.

I wish it didn’t have to be like that; I wish that our default position was an assumption of equality that didn’t beckon the show of Los Suns.  I’m still wishing for that one day when we realize the presence of many ethnicities, many cultures, but one race — the human race — and a desperate but limited law, intended for the curbing of illegal immigration and not the perversion of persecuting Latinos, wouldn’t call the unity into question.

Despite rampant speculation about his next destination, it’s looking more and more likely that Stoudemire could finish up the season in Phoenix: “One last time, Amar’e Stoudemire sat before a locker after a game and talked more about his status than how well he played or how the Suns got the result that they did. Stoudemire still had not heard a peep from management at the time. But before heading for the team bus after Wednesday night’s loss at Dallas, Stoudemire was pulled into a coaches’ office by Suns Managing Partner Robert Sarver for a brief closed-door meeting, a talk that was believed to be held to tell him that he likely will remain a Sun once the 1 p.m. trade deadline passes today. ‘It doesn’t bother me,’ Stoudemire said once again of the trade rumors, speculation, reports and even fan taunting (one Dallas fan announced to him that he had been traded during the fourth quarter Wednesday). ‘For one, I think there are teams out there that respect my hard work and my perseverance to come back from injuries. No. 2, they understand how I could help their ball club. Three, I think they see my character for what type of person I am. All that plays a factor in teams that are willing to inquire about me. That’s a positive so I look at it like that. I’ll continue playing hard for the team I am playing for.”‘

That’s the question everyone who cares about the Suns must ask themselves: “For the first time since returning in 2004, Nash’s place with the Suns is no sure thing. He will be entering the final year of his contract, a $13,125,000 team option with about $8 million in guaranteed money. General Manager Steve Kerr told Nash during the season that he wants to talk about a contract extension after the season. Even that does not guarantee Nash’s future with the Suns. After missing the playoffs, Nash could decline an extension if he is unhappy with the offer or the off-season plan. He wants to play four more seasons. ‘My first priority is to sit down and listen to Steve and (Suns Managing Partner) Robert (Sarver) and hear what their wish is and what their plan is for the team,’ Nash said. ‘I can be a part of us revamping here. I’m under the impression they want to talk an extension, and I do, too. Hopefully we can find ourselves in a position where we can revamp and be back in the playoffs and hopefully be a contender. Hopefully I’ll be a part of the plan.'”

With his team going nowhere fast, it wouldn’t exactly come as a shocker to find out that Shaquille O’Neal is looking to get the hell out of Dogde Phoenix.

The LA Times ran a story yesterday discussing the possibility of the Cavs and Suns revisiting their trade talks from last month following this season.

As for Shaq, he wasn’t in a talking mood when reporters broached the subject. From the Arizona Republic:

The Los Angeles Times reported that center Shaquille O’Neal “is saying privately he wants out” of Phoenix because the Suns pondered trading him last month and/or because they returned to their up-tempo offense. He declined comment Monday morning.

“That’s intangible stuff,” guard Steve Nash said. “It’s hard to quantify. I hope he’s not unhappy. We just want him to be happy, feeling good about himself and ready to play.”

With Phoenix owner Robert Sarver swimming in dangerous financial waters, and O’Neal on the hook for another $20 million after this year, you can be sure that this kind of chatter will only increase going into the 2009-’10 season.

The Suns simply aren’t as talented as they could be because of the monetary constraints of Robert Sarver and his ownership group. ‘It’s their team and they can do whatever they want,’ Nash said matter-of-factly. ‘At the same time, when people are critical of us they should keep in mind we can very easily have a different roster. Go through and look at the players we’ve given up that were still cheap and very valuable. Sometimes you just can’t have the same expectations you would in a different situation. You have to realize this organization is run with a business model not to make money or to not lose money — fiscal responsibility. I respect that and at the same time you can’t expect to compete with every team in the world when you have that concern.'”

Instead, they ignored his return, just as they did with Shawn Marion. Stay classy, Phoenix. Stay classy.”

The inevitable happened last night. Down 3-1 in the series, Phoenix walked into San Antonio, hung around until the very end, but ultimately lost and saw their season come to an end. And now it appears as though their coach will not return.

Jack McCallum, the man who wrote the celebrated book 07 Seconds or Less about the 2004-05 Suns, reports that the Mike D’Antoni Era in Phoenix is over.

Mike D’Antoni, the NBA’s Coach of the Year for the 2004-05 season and the man credited with re-invigorating fast-break basketball in a league gone stale, will not be back to coach the Phoenix Suns for the 2008-09 season, SI.com has learned.

Sources within the organization confirm that D’Antoni feels he does not have the backing of upper management–specifically owner Robert Sarver and general manager Steve Kerr — and considers the situation irredeemable.

McCallum paints it as a philosophical rift between Mike D’Antoni and GM Steve Kerr. Kerr wants things done differently – Steve had the gall to suggest playing defense – while D’Antoni and his .707 coaching record in Phoenix refuses to budge.

The Suns made it clear that they no longer believed in D’Antoni’s run-and-gun system when they acquired Shaquille O’Neal; with the writing clearly on the wall and the pain of another postseason failure, Mike D’Antoni had no choice but to go.
